Absolutely incredible hike. I made the scramble up the waterfall with a 2 year old in my hiking backpack. It wasn't exactly easy, but absolutely doable. Sky Pond was just like a dream. At one point, my son and I were the only ones there (my wife waited at the waterfall). The whole hike is pretty, and you pass some great lakes where you can stop to take in the views or have a snack but Sky Pond is the real treasure and I highly recommend keeping on until you make it there! Just over 9 miles rt.

This was a strenuous hike for us. We are 53. My husband rides bicycle regularly and can do 40 miles at a time and this kicked his butt too. Could be because of the elevation too. Me, I do not exercise and it has been awhile since I have hiked. But we both made it to the top!!! It just took us a couple hours longer than most, I am sure. We started at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead at 7:30 a.m. and it took us almost 4-1/2 hours to reach Sky Pond. By tye time we finished, it had taken almost 8 hours.
It was 45° when we started the hike at 7:30 a.m. on Wed. August 17th and 73° when we ended. So dress in layers!
The scramble up the side of the waterfall wasn't too bad - it was scarier coming back down it. Not as easy to find something to grip onto.
When we came up over that waterfall and saw the "pond" we collapsed next to it and started eating our lunch thankful we had made it. Then I heard a guy tell his family it was the Lake of Glass and I looked at my husband and said OMG we are not there yet! From the Lake of Glass it is kind of difficult to figure out where the path is to go to Sky Pond. I kept looking for other people to see where they were going. We figured it out and it wasn't too much beyond the Lake of Glass so make sure you continue on!
Honestly I thought the Loch Lake was prettier and then next the Lake of Glass. Sky Pond might be better earlier in the summer, once they open it up. It is a lot smaller than the other bodies of water but it is still breathtaking scenery.
You should definitely have a walking stick or hiking poles for the trek back down the mountain. It is very hard on the knees. I had knee surgery in 2014 and my knee was screaming at me not long after we started down the mountain without poles.
My photos will show the entire hike up from Glacier Gorge Trailhead, to Alberta Falls, The Loch, Lake of Glass and Sky Pond.
We even saw a female Elk on the trail. She was up ahead so we stopped about 50 yards away and kept as still and quiet as possible. Then she came walking right at us, off to the side, stared at us like she was saying we were in her way, went around us and came back to the trail behind us. Very cool.

It was end of May so the final ascend to the lake of glass was pretty slippery even with micro spikes. From the lake of glass its a 20 min hike to Sky Pond which was fairly easy compared to the ascend to the lake of glass. The view was great. The sky pond was semi frozen but was totally worth it.

I was really psyched about the Sky Pond hike. I had some trepidation about Timberline Falls, but thought we'd make the effort. However, it had snowed and the rocks were icy. My husband climbed the rocks to Lake of Glass where it was so windy, it almost blew off his knit ski hat. We took a side trip to Mills Lake as a sort of consolation. Mills Lake was very pretty!

Unbelievable, best hike I have ever done. I have done it three times.
This Time the mosquitoes were bad, I have never encountered that before.
Get going early, bring a lunch and water. I brought 10 oz. and had a life straw. Filled the water up a two different streams. Go all the way to the end, past the waterfall.

Early May visit. The Loch was frozen solid and we were able to cross it both ways to Sky Pond. The trail (even in the snow) was easy to follow and packed down. We got to the trailhead around 5:45am and would recommend starting near this time in order to have the trail to yourself. Beautiful day, beautiful scenery. Coming back, the trail had a steady stream of people coming in (many unprepared for the elements in just sneakers and no water) which was a tad annoying as stepping off the trail to pass in the snow was near impossible. Back at the parking lot there were many cars waiting for spots both here and in the overflow lot so we didn’t stay to enjoy the rest of the lot. If you’re serious about seeing any of our National Parks you have to start early. Pack snacks, lots of water and layer and you can easily make it to the top and back in a few hours.

Be prepared,
Bring water, sunblock, extra coat, always allow uphill hikers the right of way. Tell someone where you are going.

By far the best hike I did during my 4 days in RMNP. Pretty difficult hike both the distance of 10 miles involving quite an ascent along with having to scale up 20 ft of boulders at Timberline Falls. However, the scenery is spectacular and quite varied. You can start at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead or the Bear Lake Trailhead. If you're using the shuttle from the Park and Ride, I learned that starting at Glacier Gorge and ending at Bear Lake is the most efficient way of catching the shuttle without too much wait. Definitely begin the hike early shortly after sunrise to avoid the crowds that build later in the day. The first segment of the hike to Alberta Falls is the busiest and the least interesting. From there it becomes amazing. In my opinion, The Loch is even more beautiful than Sky Pond. However, it's the additional ascent and final climb up the boulders next to Timberline Falls that makes this hike fun and unique. Sky Pond is a stunning destination. On the return, I added an additional 2 miles to the hike by making a detour to Mills Lake which was well worth the extra effort. The duration of the hike was 7 hours. I would rate it as strenuous rather than moderate but so worth the effort.

The trail is hard and long. There are a lot of rocks in the trail and a little scramble as you get up higher towards the sky pond. Once you reach the lake of glass keep going and you'll get to sky pond. It's a long hike so ensure you're staying hydrated. The views along the trail are great and take breaks and enjoy the beauty of the lakes as well.

the hike to Sky Pond it pretty incredible, Lots of different terrain including hiking up a waterfall! The views are incredible, which makes up for the somewhat difficult parts of the hike. Plan on having a picnic by Sky Pond and enjoy the scenery!

My boyfriend and I are going to RMNP next week and want to hike Sky Pond, but our timed entry reservation is not until 10-12. Will we have time to do the hike? I have read a lot about starting early in order to get parking - we don’t mind taking the shuttle. Are there any safety issues that would prevent us from starting the hike that late?

Unlikely- it’s almost a 10 mile round trip so you will need to walk for about 4 hrs plus stops. We did it in 5 hrs but there are usually thunderstorms in the afternoon which you probably want to avoid

I want to see sky pond but I'm a little uneasy of the waterfall climb. I'm decently in shape but don't have a lot of upper body strength. I'm planning on going mid June. How difficult is it?

Hello,
Trying to find a review or information on hiking this trail in Mid May. I know there will more than likely be snow and spikes will be necessary but do not see any reviews for this time of the year. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi! We're planning a trip to RMNP the beginning of June and have 3 days to hike. Sky Pond sounds pretty amazing! We'd also like to do a longer summit hike. For those seasoned RMNP hikers- which hikes are your favorites?
Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Can this hike be done in a half day, starting at 7 a.m.?

Yes. If you are not an avid hiker and not acclimated to altitude it will take you about 2-4 hours to get to Sky pond, depending on how much you stop (to photograph, eat, drink, etc.) and you'll need about half that time to get down, if you don't plan on stopping.
I am an avid hiker and mountain runner. I hike up and run down. Today I started on this hike at around 10 a.m. and was back at my car by 2:30. However, I ran down and made minimal stops (once to walk around The Loch, once to stop for food for 10 minutes). I did not stay long at Sky Pond because the sky was threatening storms.
