My husband and I are in our late 40s and exercise daily and hike/walk frequently. We did 2 mile in & out part to beach. It was NOT easy. We averaged 40-minute mile due to terrain. Most of trail covered with vegetation which was relief as sun exposed areas were tough to tolerate even during late morning hours. Do not wear flip flops or white shoes. Do not take small children or carry your infant in backpack! Shuttle system was a little slow due to road construction but organized very well.

I would honestly rate this as one of the most annoying trails I’ve been on. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it but getting to the end goal of Hanakapiai Falls was highly tedious for a 2 mile hike.

- For reference, we are two active adults in our 30s
- We brought about 45 fl oz of water with us (about 3.75 pints) for the entire 8 miles out and back, and I had a clif bar. Seemed enough for us
- the up and down parts of the trail were average difficulty, however mud made footholds slippery at many parts
- the last quarter mile to the falls is just scrambling. Throw in some muddy/wet conditions and it’s highly unenjoyable
- the streams are slippery
- we finished in about 5.5 hours

Would highly recommend grabbing the 6:30am parking spot as doing the hike in day time heat, and sharing the trail with more hikers, would not be as much fun.

We hiked to the beach on the trail! We spent four hours total there.

It’s gorgeous, but heed the other warnings about how dangerous it can be. We went on a very nice day luckily, but a local was just telling us about how a rogue riptide came in a few weeks ago and injured a lot of people.

The hike to the beach is beautiful as well, but very muddy. Bring proper boots for hiking and MAKE A RESERVATION for the state park ahead of time to even get in.

Once you step foot at the base of the trail in Ha’ena State Park you will be confronted with a continual barrage of mud, mosquitos and a mountainous terrain. This trail is 4 miles in; first two miles take you to Hanakapi’ai Beach and the last two miles take you to the Hanakapi’ai Falls. For fit, experienced hikers, I’m sure this is rated as a moderate to sometimes difficult trail. But for those in average to good workout shape this is a challenging hike at every level. Overweight, lack of water/food/good shoes, the occasional danger and the almost half a mile mountain climb will cause many to turn back before the falls. You will climb up and down rock, cross numerous streams and face very slippery downhill muddy paths on your journey. The falls are worth the effort; you will be alone or almost alone once you arrive. Take a swim. Eat, drink and then begin you return home. It will take the most fit at least five hours round trip if you plan on going to beach as well. I would prepare for six to seven hours. Take plenty of water and wear hiking shoes. I have a more detailed report about the hike on the Hanakapi’ai Falls review.

This hike needs preparation. The valley is rainy and there are at least three stream crossings that will drench your shoes. The hike from the Hanakapiai beach to the waterfall is muddy even without rain. The waterfall is about 2 miles up and is worth every feet of the hike up. Best if you are prepared to swim because the water falls into a lagoon and you can swim to the falls. Hiking poles will make your hike a lot easier. So will a rain jacket if you have electronics with you.

My husband and I live on Kauai but this was the first time we have done this trail. We have done many other hikes and definitely feel like we are at least intermediate hikers. I would not recommend this hike if uneven terrain bothers your ankles, back etc. At least 50% or more of the trail is mixed rocks, tree roots, etc. Many sections on the way in and out are rather steep. There are some sections closer to the beach that are flat dirt and almost stair-like. Those head down towards the beach and are a steep climb on your way back, and I feel sorry for you if you do it when it is sunny and hot. That section is not shaded. We were moving at a fairly good pace on the way in and it took us 2 hours to get to the beach. If you actually want to go all the way to the beach, plan on crossing a stream and/or wading through water. We were more careful on the way back because my ankle was bothering me, which made going down the steep rocky terrain quite unpleasant. Even with that it only took us 2 hours to get out. This trail is as far as you can go without the Kalalau permit. You should also note that a reservation/state park pass is REQUIRED to get into Ke'e park itself, which is where the trail starts - and these sell out well in advance. The best way to do this is to schedule a reservation with the Kauai North Shore Shuttle, which will include your transportation AND park pass.

This is the first section of the Kalalau Trail and the only section you can do without a permit (although you do have to reserve a parking space or shuttle ticket to Ha'ena State Park to access it). It's just over four miles, and by my watch, 907 feet of elevation gain. So while it's not technically challenging, it can be kind of brutal in terms of up and down. About first quarter mile of the trail is straight up, but at least that's in shade. When you start back up from the beach, there's an even longer stretch of straight up that's in the sun, making it harder.
I did this trail 7.5 months pregnant, in about 2.5 hours (not counting about 20-30 minutes of down time at the beach), so it's certainly not a super crazy hard hike. (I have been lucky enough to have an easy pregnancy that's allowed me to continue my regular modest gym routine, albeit toned down.) And the views are undeniably gorgeous. But to be honest, I'm not sure I would do it again--at least the whole thing--knowing you can't go into the ocean at the end. I knew that going in, but I was so hot when we arrived, it was really sad to see the giant waves on the beach precluding anything but going in up to my knees. If I went again, I might hike the first mile or mile and a half for the views and then turn around when the straight descent to the beach started, esp since it's hardly the only gorgeous beach in Hawaii.
Also, FYI it is fairly crowded, and there are a lot of people on the trail that don't know hiking etiquette. I was stuck behind several very slow people on narrow parts of the trail that didn't offer to let us pass, and when we got to the river crossing a group had just plopped down in the middle of the trail to take off their shoes, forcing people to scramble around them.

We’re from Colorado so we thought this hike would be a snap. I’m 66. DH is 79. It was lovely to exercise in this oxygen rich area! But it’s still a climb- pretty much straight up on slippery wet rocks when drizzly. The view is breath taking! My DH decided to call it quits after a mile. We really wanted to see the falls and finding out it was another 3 miles past the beach did us in. But it’s a great hike! Go enjoy it!

Fabulous, jaw-dropping views, impressively well-built trail dating back to 19th century Hawaiians, lots of elevation gain. Wear sensible shoes. Would be very slippery in wet weather. The beach is really, really beautiful - but don't get too close to the waves, you would be far from help if you got pulled in... It was very strenuous for two reasonably fit sixty-year-olds like us... though all kinds of folks managed to get in and out. Hats off to the parents with kids on their backs... We found out when we got there that they recommend two liters of water per person (we only had one liter each and it was a hot, sticky day). Reservations are now needed, either for bus or parking, so check the website in advance to get slots. The North Shore Shuttle is reliable.
