Windley Key offered a birding walk in the early Saturday morning I joined a walk of 12 birders. We arrived before 8:00 AM and the gate was locked. The entrance area is small and 3 cars crammed in to wait for the ranger to open the gate. There is a welcome center with a display of fossils, Flagler Railroad information and items for purchase. Restrooms and a drink machine are here. A large veranda is a nice spot to view the coral quarry and wait for birds to fly over. The trails are nicely marked and maintained. Do consider wearing insect repellent as parts of the walk are near red, black and white Mangroves.

What a hidden gem. Interesting to learn about the Keystone that makes up the upper Key islands. The native plant/tree hammock was very informative and beautiful. Staff were over the top friendly and willing to share their knowledge. HIGHLY recommend a visit!

The fabulous state parks of the Florida Keys are somehow hidden gems and Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological SP is no exception. Only a small fee to get in and several wonderful trails through the forests, fossilized coral, and old machinery. A great way to spend an hour or so. Highly recommended.

This is a great park! Very inexpensive - $2.50 a person. They have a number of short trails - some are through a hardwood hammock, some through the quarries. The rangers are helpful and they lend you a book with all the explanations and tree identifications. The trails are well marked. The fossils are very cool, they are old coral reefs. So don't expect dinosaurs. Bring bug spray, because it is Florida and they do have mosquitoes.

If you like nature trails, self-guided tours, and a splash of history, this is the perfect park for you. Your trivial admission fee includes loan of an interpretive guidebook with information on about a hundred numbered markers throughout the park. There are three main trails which are all relatively short. We walked them all in about an hour and a half. Lot of information on the vegetation and how the plants have been (and still are) used. The exposed coral quarry walls really give you a sense of how much geologic time has passed before this area was uplifted.

Very cool and interesting if you are interested in FL history! We’ve driven past a million times and finally decided to visit. There are several trails to follow with the longest 2 only being 1/2 mile. The quarry and fossilized limestone is very interesting to see and the hammock trail is quiet, peaceful and shaded. Perfect for a sunny FL day. Great exploring!

This is a series of hiking trails amongst indigenous trees and plants with quarries. Maps are provided for the trails at the park ranger station. The maps and trails are well-marked so that it’s difficult to get lost. The quarries provide an opportunity to view the exposed geological strata and ancient coral. Bug spray is recommended otherwise you’ll be eaten alive.

Very neat place. Historical, informative, and nicely maintained. History of how coral was extracted and turned into product for the Flagler railroad. Nice trails and there is a guidebook at ghe pay station that you can borrow and return that tells about the vegetation and key points of the park. Take bug spray for the mosquitos and water for the trails. We also found a tree with a "butt"

We stopped off here on the spur of the moment while motoring back north from key West. It's an interesting little museum, which is free, plus an extensive park that costs to enter. We limited ourselves to the museum, in part because we don't walk long distances nowadays. The museum does a nice job of displaying the geology of the area and the history of its exploitation as a quarry. It's worth a short stop if you're travelling highway 1.

This park is perhaps not visited by many. It is a must if you want to know about the Keys, how they got there, and the life that exists there. The guided tour is the best way to see this. Don't miss it.
