On August 24th, Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox cancelled its Spruce Theatre performance due to heavy rain. The next day I went to the box office for a refund and was told none would be issued -- the back of the ticket indicates there would only be an exchange for another performance or a "credit" for future use.

On. Aug. 29 I sent a letter to Stephen Ball, the General Manager, saying this was unfair, especially to tourists with limited time in the area and who may not return again. I noted that common practice is that when a venue cancels a performance, customers receive a refund. When the ticket was purchased using their website, nothing was indicated about a no refund policy. The website should have clearly indicated the policy before a purchase was made.

I asked for a full refund. To date, this manager has not even had the courtesy to respond.

We saw the play, Lunar Eclipse, starring Karen Allen and Reed Birney. Playwright Donald Margulies was in the audience. Remarkable performances.

We also had drinks and a cheese board before the play. Very good food at reasonable prices. Warm and friendly atmosphere.

When we visit the Berkshires we always try to attend a performance at Shakespeare and Company. This year was no exception and we saw a masterful performance of the play Fences.
The grounds of Shakespeare and Company are beautiful. There are beautiful gardens, many areas to walk, ample seating and picnic tables if one wishes to enjoy a meal. Inside the theater is a concession stand and more areas to sit. Parking is plentiful.
There is an outside theater and The Tina Parker Theater is indoors.
Fences was held in The Tina Parker Theater. Tickets were easy to purchase and there were some discounts available. The theater really does not have any poor seats. The acoustics are excellent and theater patrons are quite close to the actors. The scenery was very effective for this play. Each actor in this play was excellent and added to the excellence of this performance. Fences was an excellent play and added to our wonderful experiences in The Berkshires.

Lenox

Astounding Production of "Fences" by August Wilson

911625903

We saw "Fences" by August Wilson. Every single actor in the cast was high level and evocative. Tears were pouring down my face as the entire audience clapped in standing ovation at the end. This is the third time in my life that I've seen this play, and it was like I had never seen it! The actors were absolutely captivating and each actor really held me in that magical space creating that "third body." I just can't get over it. It is 4 days later, and I STILL feel the intensity they created. It is absolutely amazing what human beings can do. I will be following this theater at 70 Kemble Street and also this Great Barrington-area-based Shakespeare & Company. A fine group with superior skills! I am so thankful! PS: As for venue, they actually have snacks! I didn't know this in advance! It is a huge complex with lots of outdoor and indoor chairs/tables so you can really relax beforehand if you like. This entire place is a treasure and clearly provides lots of training and performance opportunities for actors and audiences in the area! Playing until the end of August, so I hope you, too, will get to see this amazing group of actors!

It was a rainy evening, but we really wanted to see A Midsummers Night Dream At Shakespeare & Company! When we arrived, it was still raining, but we checked in and waited outside under a tent. Finally the rain stopped or was very light. Everyone headed for the seats. The stage was by a group of tall trees and they seemed to fit in well. When the show began, it didn’t take long to realize how much fun the show was going to be! The “modern twist” on Shakespeare comedy was excellent! All the actors and actresses were very talented, but I must say that Jacob Ming-Trent as Bottoms was outstanding! He was hilarious and commanding in his role. I enjoyed his singing too. A very well rounded actor!
Despite the occasional rain, we were thrilled to see the show. We were given lightweight clear ponchos, which were ideal to keep us in our seats rather than fleeing. Very thoughtful. I must commend the actors and actresses who continued their roles as if the weather was ideal. The crew supporting them was also to be thanked for this part. This was our first time at Shakespeare & Company, but we shall return!

Shakespeare & Company continues to be an absolute gift to anyone visiting, or living in, the Berkshires. We've been going for years, and have always been pleased, often thrilled, and sometimes even astonished, by the quality of the performances. If you can make it to the current main offering - The Contention (Henry VI, Part II), you should do so.

Don't let the fact that it's one of Shakespeare's "histories" scare you off! From the jump, it's a gripping, human story. There are politics and scheming, but it's all relatable and not hard to follow. Best of all, this play offers an abundance of moving and complex roles for some of the company's finest long-time leads.

No matter what production you see, if you're in the Berkshires during their season, you should take in a show at S. & Co.

We attend at least one performance at Shakespeare & Company every time we stay in the Berkshires. They have added additional outdoor performance spaces in response to the Covid pandemic, and our theater was outdoors. It was comfortable, small enough to feel like a personal experience, and the performance itself was wonderful. We highly recommend this theater company.

We recently had a chance to see a production at the New Spruce Theatre during our recent visit to Lenox. We saw a very fine performance of King Lear starring Christopher Lloyd. We have visited the theatre many times but this was our first visit to the new outdoor theatre. it is relativetly small and intimate, and visitors shoudl be aware that there is no cover in the event of inclement weather.

We are so lucky to have this wonderful institution in New England. Is is a great experience and a wonderful attraction for both locals and visitors.

A wonderful experience which we will continue to support.

We watched King Lear at the New Spruce Theatre - the seating was perfect (and comfortable). They had COVID seating charts in place - seat skipped between each group so you felt comfortable. We could hear all actors (row D on the left close to the middle) and see the action. The play went over the 2 hour 50 minute run time which was fine with us as well as it appeared the entire audience.

It had rained during the day and just finished half an hour before the show. The staff made sure to dry off all of the seats so it was a non-issue for us. It was a great location and all of the actors did a wonderful job!

Good staging, intimate theater. Be prepared to fend off mosquitoes. Not all actors are equally capable of projecting in an outdoor setting. I saw Christopher Lloyd in King Lear; his voice was not equal to the requirements of the open theater. Hard to hear him; not a problem with most of the other actors. If you don't have keen hearing, are sitting in the back, rent one of the listening assistant sets on offer.
