We stopped by on our way across Montana. Although the pictographs are a bit faded, it was interesting to learn more about the history of the area. A paved path leads to the main cave. The path is a bit steep in some spots. A gravel path leads to additional caves with more pictographs. The scenery is beautiful with cliffs and trees and territorial views. A small visitor center provides additional info.

Not the most stunning pictographs as many are no longer visible but the site is very interesting and there is a short trail. You can imagine living on the ledging and caves of the site thousands of years ago, especially to escape the Montana sun.

Don't go expecting to see a lot of cave drawings! I could make out one faded drawing and that was it. After that, it was hot and sunny and we didn't go to the Ghost Cave...it was a much longer walk and not on a nice sidewalk. It's a nice drive up to the visitor center (which was closed in the middle of the day) and the scenery is great and overlooks the city, the sidewalk up to the first cave is pretty steep...but don't expect much.

Be aware that this is a very small hike but there is a heck of an incline for about 25-50ft and at noon when it’s 82° it catches you off guard. Sadly, I don’t think the paintings will be preserved all that much longer - they are becoming very very faded. It’s definitely cool to see but if you’re only going for the pictographs, you might be underwhelmed

You would never know that this attraction is close to the interstate. The views are incredible. There is a visitors center with clean bathrooms, a beautifully shaded, grassy picnic area with great old trees itching to be sat in. Trees are perfect for photo ops. There are 2 trails 1 paved and the other gravel that meet at the top of the hill. Plenty of places to rest on the way up. Totally cool to see the artifacts and imagine what the terrain might have looked like under water.

This is a 3 or 4 star type activity - depending on who you are. I've visited countless native historical sites - and this one is ok at best. There's a nice simple trail to some of the cave sites - they're really more overhangs than caves. Decent little museum there as well. If you find native history interesting - this is worth a 45 minute stop. If you're expecting wild and well defined cave art, you can skip this stop.

We were passing through Billings on our Montana trip and decided to see this cave.We arrived around noon and the door was locked at the visitor center. We paid $8 by putting it into an envelope. Short walk to the cave. Very confusing.Hard to see any writings on the walls. The best part is actually standing in the same spot as people had hundreds and thousands of years earlier.Don't make a special trip, but if your in the neighborhood definitely see this historic site.

Worth the drive if you're in the area. Low cost and an easy hike to the pictograph caves. Really cool to see these pictographs and thinking about how natives lived in the area.

Sadly most of the pictographs have disappeared due to nature and pollution. However the view is spectacular and worth the short hike up to look. $8 per car fee

Can actually go into the caves?

There are no actual caves to go into. They are a collection of open faced caves and you can see where different groups dating back thousands of years have lived. It’s pretty cool.

Cold this be a short 1-2 hour stop on a road trip- or will it not be "worth it"? We will have 5 people total in our group.

It’s a great short stop. We were there for 45 minutes. Good stretch of the legs and potty break. A one of a kind experience. Don’t miss!

Is the trail stroller friendly? About how far?

Billings, MT24 contribuciones
Yes, you can easily push a stroller up to the caves (or grotto), but you can't really travel onto the side trails. Too ruff and unimproved at this point in time.
Can a manual wheelchair be used in the caves or is this not possible?

From the parking lot area to the caves is a moderate to steep incline in elevation. About a five minute walk. The path up to the caves proper, are improved concrete sidewalks amenable to the use of a wheelchair. A few side trails are gravel and would, I feel, be too difficult for a wheelchair.
Unless the individual is quite strong in the upper arms and quite mobile, I feel it may be difficult, possibly too difficult to make the short trip up to the caves for the average person. However with the accompaniment of a strong companion to help push, the wheelchair would be quite doable with some moderate effort. The small interpretive center at the parking lot level would also be quite accessible to a wheelchair.

what's the entrance fee and is it closed any time?

Hello,
As of March 2016 I believe it was $6 per car for out-of-state visitors and free for Colorado residents.
They do have set hours that coincide roughly with the hours that it's daylight. We were there on a Sunday and it closed at 5pm that day. Be aware that the visitor center closes earlier than the trail to the caves themselves.
The park does have an official website where you can confirm current price and hours - check out stateparks.mt.gov/pictograph-cave
Hope that helps! Enjoy your visit if you go.
What is the admission fee?
