It was a very good experience for my wife and I. The layout of the building and the displays were very good and very thought out. It was very educational and we really did enjoy ourselves.

Smaller museum, but the displays are interesting and well thought out. It also has a beautiful art gallery in the back.

Amazing collection for a relatively small museum (note that they are expanding). Wonderful collection of Charlie Russel art mixed with great exhibits detailing development of the area from prehistoric to current times. Great museum store as well. Perfect follow up after Train Tour where half prices ticket to museum obtainable. Tickets good for two days.

A modest museum, but with good presentation quality. One exhibit is historic paintings (at this time), another mostly about Native Americans, and the third a mish-mash of mostly natural history topics. The unique aspect here is a presentation of the spectrum of Native American tribes from 19th century Montana and their artifacts.

There is a lot to see in the museum and they have a great gift shop. But the main reason for going here is to see the excellent collection of paintings and sculptures by noted Western artist, Charles M. Russell.

And why not? - Montana's rich connection to the land, the sky and the water flows from our native culture's respect and use of the resources we so proudly enjoy. Very fine curation of early civilization and their practical applications of natural gifts - for food, medicine, clothing, housing and livelihood. The many tribes are well documented and represented by artifacts and reproductions of their handicraft, majestic in purpose and presentation. Easy to spend a couple hours absorbing the cultural impact of our predecessors. And then the CM Russell gallery provides multiple examples of our celebrated artist's best works, including many illustrated cards and letters to personal friends that give an intimate glimpse to the man's passion for this land he loved. Just a wonderful collection, elegantly presented in a timeline fashion in the gallery's loop. Outstanding curation throughout.

We enjoyed our visit here - initially selected to kill some time before our scheduled trolley tour departure which would be leaving just outside the front door of the museum.
Selections from the museum’s permanent art collection line the initial entry hall - this is a great place to start your tour. On the bottom floor is a very nice exhibit spanning various aspects of Montana history - starting with a brief overview of the very long-term assessment of the landscape before entering more modern (Native American) cultural overviews. The exhibits then continue with cowboy culture, mining, railroads, ranch life and more. Next door is an exhibit dedicated to the works of Charles Russell— Montana’s pre-eminent artist. The third floor has an exhibit devoted to our military. A nice place to spend one to three hours.

This is a great museum. The displays were well organized. The Charlie Russell display was superb and a reason to go here. Be on the lookout for buy-one-get-one-free admission passes which you can get at the Helena Visitor Center on Reeder Alley.
