I have been a big fan of the Saratoga and North Creek since it’s inception. We had previously ridden the Polar Express over the last several years and experienced multiple levels of classes from coach to first class. This year we were disappointed to find out that they would no longer be running the Polar Express. However, we decided to give the Train to Christmas Town a chance.

At first I was somewhat skeptical. The ride is another 40 minutes North of Saratoga and is located at a dude ranch. Not having the Polar Express theme was a draw back as well. However, I am glad we stuck with it.

Having the train leave from the ranch is perfect, because the railroad was able to set up additional activities for the family that were not possible in the small Saratoga station. We met Santa’s reindeer, watched a toy train layout, painted horseshoes, made picture frames, took pictures, danced with other families on the dance floor and had a great time! There is way more to do at Stony Acres Ranch than there ever was in Saratoga. We stayed until the next train left and actually followed it most of the way down it’s ride, which my son loved.

The train ride itself was also great. We paid for coach tickets since we had an odd number in our party which would normally exclude us from first class or diamond seating as those need to be booked in even numbers based on the seating configuration. We were very pleasantly surprised to be given seats in the dome car since the train was not sold out. This was fantastic and made for a great ride. I would have purchased those seats to begin with if they were available.

Unlike another reviewer who trashed this experience, I almost completely disagree. Yes there were animals that came to visit (a squirrel, cat and bear), but they are right out of the story about the Train to Christmas Town. While they may not be Christmas themed, they are right out of the story, so they made sense to have them. The kids got a kick out of them. The elves were as energetic and fun as they always were on the Pole Ex, and Santa and Mrs. Claus were great as ever.

My advice is to go and enjoy this ride, but bring an open mind. If you are looking for a polished train ride out of the movies located in downtown Saratoga, you need to re adjust your expectations. This was a great family activity located in the heart of the Adirondacks that is run by a family friendly crew. The lack of access to WiFi and cell service guarantees that your kids will be engaged.

Bottom line, I highly recommend this trip, but go with an open mind!

Horrible! We had a family tradition to go on the Polar Express in Saratoga, NY. When we booked the train ride back in October it was still the Polar Express but when we received our confirmation email we were told that it’s a new train ride called the Train to Christmas Town. Since we already told our kids we were going we said we would give it a shot and still go. Well I️ regret going! To start off the train was one hour away from Saratoga and they provided us the wrong address. The address they provided us left us in the middle of a country road with nobody around for miles. We had to drive 20 minutes back to a town to get cell phone reception. When I️ called the customer service line they gave me a different address. We finally got there after another 30 minuets. The new place where the train left from was a ranch. The parking situation was horrible. It was all dirt and a hill with no space for the cars to get by. It is basically an accident waiting to happen. We finally got on the train ride and about 10 minutes into the ride the train breaks down in the middle of no where and all the lights go out. Now I️ have my two young girls hysterical crying and scared. We sat in the dark for a good 15 minutes. The train finally started back up. The entertainment on the train was a cat, squirrel and Bear. Nothing related to Christmas. They did have Santa and Mrs Clause but I’m not sure where the other animals came into play. Also we paid for the higher class which included sitting upstairs. They were bringing people from the lower level who paid less money to the upstairs section which was more money. I️ don’t see how that is fair. I paid for the upstairs section and these other people got to sit upstairs at no extra cost. The mugs they gave out were cheap and when I️ put hot chocolate in them the decal melted off. When we got off the train there was no railroad signals. The train moved with no safety or anyone standing there to make sure the kids did not go near the tracks. The entire Experience was a horrible and it’s a complete rip off. I️ called the company to complain and express my feelings and they took my number but I️ still haven’t heard back from them and that was over a week ago. I️ will never take this train ride ever again and I️ advise anyone who plans to take it to not waste your money and plan something else!

I went for a train ride with my wife. You go through some really beautiful scenic areas. They also have food on the train, available for purchase. The train ride itself is very comfortable. Bring a camera when you go! The fall is a great time to go!

Took the ride from saratoga to North creek and back. Worth the extra money for the first class service section. Great view with comfortable seats. Drinks and beverges for sale and surprisingly reasonably priced . The ride is comfortable and relaxing. My only complaint is the 3 hour stop over in north creek. There is absolutely nothing to do except grab lunch at 1 of 4 places to go.

We took our Grandson on this trip from Hadley, NY to North Creek and return. This portion goes right along the Hudson River. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the ride in the dome car. Staff members were all knowledgeable and friendly. There is even a guide to help suggest what you might do in the 2 hour layover in North Creek - if not on this trip perhaps on another.
We really felt like we had taken a train trip rather than just a ride on a scenic train.
I would highly recommend this as part of any Adirondack adventure.

Had driven from Minnesota to New York for a college graduation. Thought we'd take a scenic train ride before heading home. Got tickets a month in advance, but three days before we got an email canceling the trip due to a lack of riders and equipment issues. Memorial Day weekend and a lack of riders? Is this operation in financial trouble?

We took the Polar Express train in December with my baby and our friends. We were exactly on time and were not let on the train, since we had to check in, even though we pre-bought tickets. We were able to go on the next train, but couldn't sit in 1st class (even though we paid for it), since there was no seats. We never got a refund for the extra charges, since we were told to call main office not sure where.
When we entered the car, we were given more trouble. They wouldn't let us sit where we were told by ticket booth, since they issued wrong tickets, even though no one was sitting in our seats.
Overall the ride itself was good and my baby enjoyed Santa. There was not much dancing.

We were on the December 17, 2016 train at 7:30 p.m. We had first class tickets. We drove 4 hours for this experience. We traveled as 3 families with 6 adults and 8 children. Upon arriving to town, one adult went to pick up our tickets. We left our hotel which was not even 5 minutes away at 6:40. We sat in line and pulled into the parking lot at 7:40! No explanation. Then when we got into the building, we were told to hurry because the train was leaving. We were toward the front of the line of cars. Having to be anxious waiting in line wondering what is going on. Is the train running? Will my kids be awake? Did we try 4 hours for nothing? To finally get inside, thankful we already had our tickets and still feel anxiety about actually getting on the train... wondering if your children will wet themselves or if you will miss the train because you had them pee first...not the way I wanted to start this evening.

We were in Car C. When we get to our area of seats, we were told that children should sit on the left side of the train. As that is where most of the items are. Well how nice that we had one section of seats on the left and two on the right. So come arrival time to the "north pole" all of our kids are crowding around one window.

They read the book to you but you can hardly hear it. Everyone is talking and the speakers weren't loud enough. The conductor came around and punched the children's tickets. I think he did it based on age because my 6 year old got 6 holes, and my 1 year old got 1 but he never asked my middle child's age and so my 3 year old has 2 hole punches. A little irritating. Even more so reading a review on here that another person in I believe a standard car had a conductor who did Intials.

It is not cheap. From an adult's perspective, I spent a lot of money to sit in a cold car, drink luke warm hot cocoa, eat a cookie, get a bell for my child, see a big polar express book that I could barely hear being read to us, and see some lights out the window. For what we paid, it shouldn't matter what side of the car you sit on. Not that I needed to feel my seats were of lesser value before we even sat down. Plus we had to pay for parking and the lot was extremely icy. I thought I was going to slip and injure myself or break one of our mugs falling in the parking lot. Literally looked like penguins taking Itty bitty steps to get to our car.

But my kids were delighted. They had a wonderful time and got to take pictures with elves and Santa.

What a terrific and awesome time we had! My husband, grandkids and myself relived the story of the Polar Express.... the dancers were awesome and friendly, the conductor punched the kids initials, the hobo very friendly, Santa was absolutely wonderful and I can go on and on. The mugs are beautiful and the bells given were awesome with the words The Polar Express engraved. They could have been a bit more generous with the hot coco and perhaps a few cookies oppose to the one given, but they both taste delicious. We were in the first class car where you sat with tables making it much more comfortable and roomy. This was an experience that we will all remember and cherish. Thumbs way up! Oh forgot to mention they all were willing to take photos without hesitations.
