This is one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. It consists of a museum, educational presentation, and an experience inside a real coal mine all provided by real miners who are retired. The facility has a museum with interesting artifacts some of which bring back many childhood memories. The presentation gave fascinating insight into the history of coal and mining. The mine tour takes you into mine via a miner’s transport vehicle where you get a real appreciation for what it was like for miners. The mine is laid out to show coal mining progress over the years with real functioning coal mining equipment! The sights, sounds, low ceilings, dimly lit conditions provided a wonderful experience for visitors. All of the folks who give the tour are friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable. If you like history and immersion experiences, this place is a must.

We were looking for something different to do during our latest visit to Pittsburgh. We both love history and exploring and had long wanted to go down a coal mine. The tour guides were knowledgeable and informative and gave great insight into the history of mining and of this mine in particular. We enjoyed the ride down into the mine and the tour about the working conditions over the years. It was we’ll worth the trip.

This was the 'real deal'! As far as tours go, this was educational, informative and so interesting, not in the least because the tours are led by guys who've worked the coal mines and truly understand what they are talking about. They have lived it!
Start with an informative video, then a bit of history and prep, then squat down and in you go, ride a real coal car deep into the mine; just a little taste of what it must have felt like. There is a great effort to be educational and factual. In the tunnels are displays of various equipment, from the 1800's up to more current equipment. And of course the tour guide sharing some personal experiences, which makes it so real.
Being a city dweller this was an eye-opener about the challenges, hard life, safety issues these men have experienced. And it is still very hard work.

Had a great tour guide that had a great knowledge of coal mining. Great staff. Showed us different equipment and how it was used and why. Also, a lot of knowledge of how they started regulations on mine safety. And, the poor kids that used to work in the mine and how they treated their employees before and what they had to do for a meager living that was so dangerous. Been around for a while and has a lot of old fashioned buildings. Check the tour dates of when it's open because I looked at the top and not the bottom earlier in the week and showed up earlier in the week and then came back and they aren't open right now except for Sat and Sun until the end of Oct. And, the area around it on the acreage had a giant flee market with a lot of different items for sale different times of the month that's nice to look through. There's Shadows Haunted Attraction there now that I didn't go into because not sure what time that it is open. Not far from Pittsburgh and has a lot of neat little towns to check out right around it like the town Vandergrift's Meetheads Pub and Eatery that has great food that I had gone to about a month ago.

Great place to start off your spooky Halloween season. This place reminds me of the school day to scare you. You walk a real pathway outside the entire time and the actors are trying to get you to jump or scream. I'm a vet in haunted houses and worked for the best in Pittsburgh I recommend going here.

By really great people. Former coal miners who are friendly and knowledgeable show you the museum of artifacts and antiques from years gone by when coal was mined by hand and the company store was where you spent the “script” you earned. Learn some history of immigration, coal mining and coal patch life in Western Pennsylvania. After that, put on a hard hat and ride into the coal mine just like miners did. Inside you will see how mining was done over the decades. See actual mining equipment operated. No worries - while it is dark and cool (50 degrees) it is safe and clean.

My son (9) and I had a great time visiting the mine. We got to travel deep inside the mine and witness first hand how the machinery worked back in the time. The two people we met that work there were great, kept everybody engaged and shared jokes. The gift shop has very reasonable prices. We left with ton of new information about coal and mines. Great place to take your kids. Don't forget a sweater, it's chilly down there.
