Parking ample. We were made welcome at the main building. Due to lack of rain in Scotland some of the ponds and marshes were dry. Nontheless we saw lots of waterfowl and other birds. Well worth the visit.

We visited here last weekend and had such a lovely time!
So many hides, a beautiful coastal trail which is dog friendly & beautiful views too!
Only thing to mention, there aren't any bins other than inside the visitors centre so those with dogs will have to carry the dog bag round for a while!!

This coastal reserve has ample parking and a visitor centre. The centre was not staffed - a change from our visit a few years ago. There are feeders by the centre that attract a variety of finches, including yellowhammers and tree sparrows. There were also several hundred barnacle geese. We were lucky to catch them before they migrate northwards.

Probably the best place to see barnacle geese in close proximity! Also plenty of birds around the car park in the hedges including gold crest. Two hides in easy walking distance plus the option to walk around the perimeter onto the beach. Small visitors centre with a lovely volunteer. Definitely a reserve to visit when in the area.

Potentially a great reserve, with good , wide views across reed beds and meres. Have always visited in Autumn/Winter but I imagine it's good for flowers at other times of the year.
Unfortunately, like far too many other RSPB reserves, people are allowed to walk dogs there, which are not even kept on leads. They are either nature reserves or dog-walking parks. They can't be both.

Pretty quiet birdwise. As July usually is but sightings of butterflies, moths and beetles fill in the gaps. There were plenty of small birds around busy feeding their young - house and tree sparrows, goldfinches, greenfinches, etc. We walked to both hides but the watertable was very low.

We visited Mersehead last year, always drove past with intentions of calling in one day, that day happened and we were so delighted and asked ourselves why had we not visited sooner.
We joined RSPB and enjoy infrequent visits being cautious due to Avian Flu virus.
The hides and walks are amazing.

Lovely, long walk. Multiple bird hides as well as gift shop. The beach is beautiful as well as really quiet. Could hear the Natterjack toads! Would recommend.

We left visiting until later in our trip as the area had received so much rain that a lot of areas were flooded. Fortunately most of it had dried up but would recommend wellies. There are 2 good hides here with views out over the wetland areas. We saw thousands of Barnacle Geese plus lots of ducks. The surrounding hills looked stunning in the sunshine.
There is no entry fee but £3 to park or free to RSPB members. There are toilets in the visitor centre.

Visited the beach for a picnic with my children, parents and sister and first impressions of the beach was that it was very beautiful and quiet. Set up our picnic area and then I took a wander to collect shells for sandcastle decorating. Came across a couple of pieces of broken glass so popped them into a bucket to dispose of later. Walked a little further and kept coming across broken glass and eventually found so much that I was able to fill a sandcastle bucket full, almost to the brim. On various beaches I’ve came across the odd piece of worn glass which has obviously came in with the tide but this looked like recently broken bottles scattered across an area close to the entrance of the beach. I urge everyone to wear footwear on the sand if you wish to keep your feet intact and save a trip to A&E.
nice afternoon otherwise :)

Are dogs allowed on a lead?
Mersehead_Reserve
Dalbeattie, UK11 contribuciones
Hi Deb B,
I am sorry for the delayed response. Yes we allow dogs onto the reserve, provided they are kept under proper control and that visitors follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. It is important to keep to the trails and not permitted for dogs to run around on the reserve. Please respect the fact that this is a nature reserve and that wildlife may be disturbed if users leave the trail. We ask dog walkers to pick up any dog foul and I am afraid that this should be taken away with you (as we do not provide dog litter bins). I hope you will enjoy any visits to our reserve. Thanks.

where does the walk start from and how many miles please
Mersehead_Reserve
Dalbeattie, UK11 contribuciones
Hi Glenda J,
There are two walking trails on the reserve. Both begin at the reserve's visitor centre, across from the main car park. The Coastal Trail is 2.5 mile circular route, which takes around 90 minutes to complete. Part of this route (1 km/0.6 mile) is along the sandy shoreline, with the rest of the route being flat and reasonably firm underfoot. The Wetland Trail is slightly shorter, with paths leading to two viewing hides. It follows a route along the main farm road/track, with paths at various points leading to the hides. The furthest hide is 1 mile from the visitor centre. This trail is a linear route.

There are 2 trails, the wetland trail is 2 miles with 2 hides and the coastal trail which is 2.5 miles and includes the shoreline. Full information and a map are available at the visitor centre near the car park. Hot drinks and snacks are on sale in the visitor centre and a toilet.

what wildlife can one find?
Mersehead_Reserve
Dalbeattie, UK11 contribuciones
Hi Robin S,
Firstly, please accept our apologies for not contacting you sooner. There have been several changes on reserve in the last 12 months and in the way that our social media has been managed by various personnel.
To answer your question thoroughly, I would suggest contacting either the RSPB or Mersehead reserve directly.
The reserve is renowned for the thousands of Svalbard barnacle geese that arrive here from late September to April each year. We also have thousands of ducks and waders which over-winter on our wetlands and forage in the farmland of the reserve. This includes teals, wigeons, pintails, shovelers, mallards and waders, liker oystercatchers, curlews and lapwings.
The UK's rarest amphibian, natterjack toads breed here (one of the most northerly places where they are found, on the planet), when they emerge from hibernation in April.
Otters, roe deer, badgers and brown hares are all active on the reserve and the displays of blooming wild flowers can be a draw to many species, like common blue, meadow brown and ringlet butterflies and day-flying moths, like six-spot burnet moths.
Songbirds are present all year round but some of the highlights include reed buntings, yellowhammers, linnets, skylarks, gold finches and tree sparrows and summer visitors like sedge warblers, reed warblers and whitethroats.
Hopefully this will give you a taste of what is on offer at the reserve.
Thanks.
