Last spring my husband and I had the delightful experience of staying at Norman Diego’s Mexican Inn in Cabo San Lucas. It is a small, family run hotel located close to the Plaza in downtown Cabo. Previously, we have stayed in one of the mega resorts located along the tourist corridor. This time we wanted to be in town, close to the variety of restaurants Cabo has to offer, the local shops and hoping to recapture some of the charm that drew us to Mexico 35 years ago. Our stay at The Mexican Inn did not disappoint. The Inn is on a corner located on a typical street, unpaved, with commercial and residential establishments. The outside of the inn is nicely maintained, with fresh paint and tile steps leading to the striking iron gate. Once inside the gate, you enter into a calm and tranquil setting, with a beautiful fountain and appealing courtyard. The noise and bustle of the street is left behind. The inn has about 8 rooms that open onto the central courtyard. The architecture of the inn is reminiscent of an earlier time with tile in a variety of shapes, sizes and lots of colors. It is cheerful and bright. I think the inn was built in the early 1960’s. While the rooms are small, there is plenty of storage for clothing and gear. Our room had a wonderfully carved armoire for hanging clothes and a matching dresser, also bedside tables with lamps for reading. The bed was quite comfortable with very nice linens. The bathroom was tiny, but totally adequate with a shower with good water pressure and lots of hot water. A recommendation would be better lighting in the bathroom. There was also an outlet in the bathroom. There was the obligatory rooster that lived in a house behind the hotel and so we were occasionally greeted by an early morning crow call. No alarm clock needed on Mexico time. A most pleasant part of the day at the inn was morning when we were treated to a delicious, light breakfast under the palapa in the courtyard. Every morning there was excellent coffee, freshly squeezed juice, pastries, toasted breads, and fresh fruits to savor. It was just so pleasant to begin our day in such a relaxing manner. The courtyard has an array of healthy flora and song birds so you really feel you are far from being in the middle of a city. The courtyard is also a great place in the evening to enjoy a vino or cerveza before turning in at night. The inn is just spotless…and personal attention is given to any special request you may have. Certainly a huge part of what makes The Mexican Inn so special are the two onsite inn keepers, Julia and her brother, Sed. It was pure delight to meet them. These two individuals work tirelessly to ensure that their guests are comfortable and satisfied. Their graciousness was so appreciated and it was a joy to greet them each morning. I hope they continue to prosper. For us, this was the perfect place to stay, it’s an excellent value for the price and we will definitely return when our travels take us to Cabo again.
¡Julia, la torta era deliciosa! Sed, esperamos que vaya la universidad bien. ¡Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo! Le deseamos mucha buena fortuna.
