We are both naturally disappointed that this reviewer didn't fully enjoy his stay at the Ferryboat.
We have addressed the issues he has raised as set our below.
Restaurant & Bar Advertising.
All advertising for the last 3 years, including our website, clearly states that the restaurant and bar is not open on a Sunday or Monday, so he must have misread or misunderstood this information.
Arrival Procedure
We cannot always be on the premises to personally greet every guest and we do not advertise a 24hr reception desk. However, we do contact guests before arrival to say if we are not going to be on the premises when they arrive and supply a door entry code to gain entry into the premises. We therefore consider we acted reasonably and attentively and professionally in ensuring that when this guest arrived, he could get access to his room. We also provided him with a contact telephone number, should he have any queries in our absence.
Restaurants Available Locally
We would have been more than happy to assist him with any questions, had he contacted us. Whilst we do not currently provide a list of restaurants/establishments where you can eat, there is a brochure on Fishguard and Goodwick which is left in every room and this lists several places to eat, gives their telephone numbers and address and there is even a map to show their location. Most people do use this booklet and it is ashame he did not refer to it. Nevertheless, we have taken on board his comments and we are currently compiling our own list or eateries/take outs with a map which we shall put in our room information folder.
Goodwick has more eateries than Fishguard, with three more opening soon. Granted on a Sunday night some do close, but there were 2 places open within a 10 to 15 minute walk on the night he stayed. Also, a taxi to Fishguard village would not have cost much.
Desolate area
He also described that we are in a desolate area. Goodwick and Fishguard are small hamlets nestled in rural Pembrokeshire, located on the award winning Pembrokeshire Coastal path. It is not built up and housing and businesses do not fill every street; that is part of Pembrokeshire's charm. His use of the word "Desolate" gives the wrong impression and is inaccurate.
Bed Quality
With regard to the bed quality, we have never had anyone complain ...quite the contrary. We do turn the mattresses regularly to ensure even wear, but we feel that bed hardness/softness is very personal, and what is not right for one person, is perfect for the other. The beds are also checked by our housekeeping staff to ensure quality daily. Had he brought this matter to our attention, the fact that is was uncomfortable for him, then we would have been more than happy to find a solution. However, the first we hear of this is in a review he posted once he has returned home.
The Breakfast
On our recent grading by Visit Wales, we were awarded five stars for breakfast. A great breakfast to set our walking guests up for a good days walk. Our full Welsh breakfast includes award winning bacon and local pork sausage or even homemade Glamorgan sausages that always receive great feedback. We serve smoked salmon, fresh fruit, dried fruit, luxury yoghurt, seeds, nuts, fresh bread, cereal and fresh coffee. We feel this is more than adequate, but we would always welcome more suggestions from our guests.
The title of his review "not great for walkers" is untrue. We are used by several walking holiday companies that use us week after week, year after year. We were obviously "Not great for him" and we feel his general sweeping title is unfair.
Luggage Transfer
He made reference to the fact that he was very tired but we note that he was carrying his luggage in backpacks. Given the weather he experienced this made for a hard day's walking. The majority of walkers use day packs and have their main luggage transferred on to the next accommodation. As beautiful as the Pembrokeshire coastal path is, in poor or fair weather it can be tough going at times. We do take comments seriously and have now decided to offer luggage drop offs ourselves for a small fee.
In Summary
We take our business and our livelihood very seriously, and make every effort to ensure that complaints are dealt with appropriately. Of course we want every guest to be happy, but we do know that this is never going to be a true reality, albeit we strive to make this happen, it is the nature of individuals and expectations that you can't always please everyone. However, we are proactive in our management and endeavour to make improvements to our guests' experiences at all times. It is only by giving and receiving feedback that both the reviewer and the reviewee can make a difference.
