Combsberry is a historic Inn that sits on 35 acres of waterfront property. We are a very secluded locale in the heart of Marylands Eastern Shore, with woods surrounding us on three sides and water on the fourth. The charm and appeal of the Combsberry is the simple fact that as soon as one enters our driveway, they immediately feel like they are a world away. Combsberry is thrilled that after operating as a Bed and Breakfast for over 15 years, we have a plethora of regular, loyal guests to include top Washington DC politicians and Hollywood film stars. We take great pride in our property to include the cleanliness, maintenance and general upkeep of this 300 year old former plantation home. We have an excellent team of staff, with an extraordinary attention to detail, working daily to ensure that every guest experience is top notch. However, we cannot control nature.
This particular weekend all of Combsberrys six guests suites and rooms were booked. A window was left open in this particular guests room when they left for dinner, as well as a light on by this same window in their room. The Eastern Shore has had a particularly wet Springtime, an environment in which "midge flies" thrive. They are small flies that look similar to a mosquito and are not harmful. Much like moths, midge flies are attracted to light and will find a way into a home through the slightest crack. Midge flies do not respond to exterminators and the main way to eradicate them is via water management techniques. In other words, by pouring toxins into our environmentally protected Chesapeake Bay. Combsberry has no control over these insects and exterminators had been on site the week prior to these guests stay for standard Springtime spraying.
Our Innkeeper did all that she could to ensure these guests had a pleasant stay. When the guests returned to find insects in their room, it was after midnight and our Innkeeper was indeed sleeping in her own home. These particular guests called her phone from four different phones simultaneously, causing her phone to freeze and later had to be reformatted via the cell phone company. The guests proceeded to knock on her door, after midnight, alarming herself and her dogs. She changed into work attire and responded to their requests, in person, in just fifteen minutes. Their bedroom did indeed have midge flies surrounding the ceiling, however would not be considered an "infestation". As Combsberry had a full house that evening, the Innkeeper moved these guests to quarters on the third floor, which are not utilized as guests rooms and had been vacant for several weeks. However, it was the only option at such a late hour and the Innkeeper was certain they would be comfortable there. Although we are very saddened and disappointed that these guests had an unfortunate experience with midge flies, we are confident that we did all that we could do within our control to make their stay a positive one.
The next morning, all five of the other couples staying at the Inn left with a smile on their face and had no issues with midge flies or any other insect. They were thrilled with their rooms, their meals and the general ambiance of the Bed and Breakfast. Newlyweds chattered on about the herd of deer that they saw outside their back door from the Cottage when they awoke. Another couple recounted their experience of crabbing from our dock. Even the couple who traveled with the guests who wrote this review joked about how they would have a great story to tell, raved about their stay and even offered to pay a portion of the room that the Innkeeper comped for their friends and the bottles of wine that they all helped themselves to. They stressed that they had an extraordinary time while at our property and apologized for the events of the night before.
Combsberry is one of the twelve original homes on the Eastern Shore and is indeed a treasure to behold. We are located in the most serene environment, free from the worries and stresses of city life. Tranquility is the main appeal of our location, along with our majestic views and abundance of flora and fauna. One has to understand that sometimes, just as it would at your own home, nature happens and there is no controlling it.
