“This house has comfort, convenience, and location - what else do you need?”

After a lot of research on rental house properties, we narrowed our search down to the north shore of Kauai, then to this house in particular. So many of the locations we rejected were flawed or described in a less than forthright manner (e.g., only in reviews did we read that one property was next to a public park rife with drifters and loud roosters; or the one that had a day-care playground between the "beach home" and the actual beach); but Hale Hina was everything it promised to be - new furnishings, a kitchen more decked out than ours at home, a lanai with soothing palms, privacy, and a glimpse of the ocean. We were so relieved it was just as described, and it just got better from there!

The beach is a short walk from the steps of Hale Hina through an empty lot - and on that beach we saw glorious sunsets, monk seals, pounding waves, and wonderful star gazing. There is no question that staying in your own home, right next to one of Kauai's many truly spectacular beaches, far exceeds the condo-hotel-resort experience. When we had dinner at St. Regis' Kauai Grill (excellent food, especially the vegetarian menu), we noticed it was filled with families including younger kids. What a drag to always feel like you can only go to the same beach, and only eat at the nearby restaurants rather than exploring more. And the cheapest room at the St. Regis is more than Hale Hina costs - for a whole house!

At the house, we had WiFi, great sound systems, a brilliantly lit main room thanks to windows and skylights. The tiled flooring was luxurious. Downstairs, under the tall pillars on which the house stands, was more Italian tiling and a pleasant, cool retreat with comfortable deck furniture, a table to eat at as a family, a grill with propane (and an extra tank), an outdoor shower surrounded by a really artsy tile and stone wall, and a day bed with mosquito netting. The landscaping in the yard is meticulously maintained, affords ultimate privacy (you can't really see the neighboring houses), and since it was breezy during our stay, soothing sounds of wind in palm and coconut trees.

We took the advice of a guidebook and first stocked up on groceries as we went from the airport to Hale Hina, stopping in Kapa'a to get lower prices, but once we got to Hale Hina, there were many staples and packaged foods left from the previous guests that made our purchases redundant. We later found Big Save in Hanalei to be pretty comparable to the food prices in Kapa'a - so maybe go to Hale Hina first and then go food shopping. I know we left many food treasures behind for the next guests.

We were shell-shocked coming out of the Safeway Food in Kapa'a - family of six, groceries for a week, $600 (was $750 before applying their saver card discount). We really didn't buy that much. I get suspicious when ALL prices for items seem to be $6.99 or $10.99 or $12.99. I know food costs more to bring in, but honestly I think there is some deep tourist gouging going on, even (or maybe especially) at the bigger stores. On the other hand, gauging by the $250 restaurant tab for five of us, or the $50 slap for two really gross pizzas (pizza shop in the Hanalei Ching shopping center), eating out all week would have cost far more than $600. Hale Hina made it possible to eat the foods we like, on our schedule, with easy or complex preparation.

The neighbors on Alealea drive, where Hale Hina is located, are worth a mention. We read about how friendly the Hawaiians are, but didn't experience that on Kauai. The neighbors around Hale Hina were even a tad on the hostile side, waving and in one case screaming at us to slow down on the Alealea gravel road. Each time, our speed was 6-8 mph - crawlingly slow. I think that they've become overly sensitive to constant strangers driving on their road, so if you stay at Hale Hina, don't be surprised if your 2-3 mph drive is rewarded with glares and waves to slow down. The rental car companies tend to rent all the same model and makes of cars (Dodge minivans, Ford Mustang convertibles, and Seabring convertibles) and you are easily and quickly identified as a tourist. Also the neighbor on the right side (east) has laid down a mound of palm fronds to reinforce their desire that you step not one toe on their property on your way to the beach.

But these were minor flies in the ointment called Paradise. We loved the house, loved the possibilities it afforded us, and highly recommend it!
