I booked my family of 8 (4 adults and 4 teenagers) on a private tour with Giorgio Iozzia based on reviews about his ability to engage with younger family members. It was very hot in Matera, about 38 degrees , even at 9:30. I could customise the tour, so we shortened to 2.5 hours because of the heat. The family, especially the teenagers were not enthused about doing the tour prior, so it was great to get their feedback about how good Giorgi was and how the could ask lots of questions and have general discussion about this southern area of Italy. Giorgi told them that nothing is off limits to ask. As the grandmother who researched and organised our itinerary, trying to give diverse experiences on our family trip I was so pleased that the tour with guide Giorgio Iozzia was such a success.

Exploring Matera with guide Giorgio was everything I'd imagined and more. He first took me to the opposite side of the gorge so I could experience the full view of Matera. Wow, so incredible. Then as we wandered the ancient streets he explained in detail the history of the city as it progressed through the ages and how it came to be a World UNESCO site. Giorgio is a wealth of knowledge and guiding experience. We explored a churches, cave dwellings, underground cistern, and visited a pastry shop, and more. As we walked and talked, I imagined how it would have been to live in this unique place. During the tour we had time for a break from the hot sun in the shade to try a local snack of Cruschi, dried peppers. As a female solo traveler, I appreciated Giorgio's expert guidance through this amazing city. Definitely a great value.

Giorgio was a wonderful guide of Matera! It was very easy to book with him, and he gave clear instructions of where to meet. As we walked through the ancient city, he shared very interesting facts and stories about the city’s history. He also shared information about Italian culture in general to help tell the story of Matera in past and present, and how modern Italy is connected so deeply to its history. It was easy to ask questions and customize based on our interests. Thanks again! We hope to take part in one of your tours again in the future 😊

Our tour guide Giorgio was excellent. The tour was very interesting, our guide had a lot of knowledge. He was very personable, knowledgeable and tailored it to what we were interested in. It was like having a friend show you around. We did a 3 hour private tour of Matera. Highly recommend this tour and guide.

We had a wonderful half day tour of Matera with Giorgio. He was very informative and struck a good balm e between taking us tot he main sites but also to lesser known and quieter spots while giving us a good feeling for what life in the city was actually like in the past. I would highly recommend this tour.

Giorgio is was like a friend taking you around the place. He was very attentive and personal and always accommodating during the tour. He would give a local’s perspective of the character of Matera and thought he goes into the history, it’s not bookish. The pace is self-driven so you don’t feel rushed making it a rather personal experience. Highly recommended guide if you are interested in Matera Sassi!

Georgio provided a great tour of the Sassi of Matera! He was very knowledgeable and personable and his detailed knowledge of the area and the history made this your great fun. We would highly recommend him as a guide and would welcome him if he ever visited us in South Carolina (USA). He was the best!

Giorgio was a terrific guide on our visit to Matera. He was engaging and kept the kids interested as well. It was a very hot day, so he made a concerted effort to find shade and keep us cool. What a fascinating place! At the end of our tour, Giorgio recommended his friend's restaurant which had excellent local wines, good food, and reasonable prices. We highly recommend booking a tour with Giorgio!

My Guide was Girgio. He picked me up at my Hotel. We visited Matera first and afterwards Alberobello. This was no doubt the best tour guide experience I ever had in my life. For the whole day he didn’t feel like a simple tour guide, he felt like my local cousin who is telling me everything about the two places and being a great entertainer at the same time. If you are in Bari area or Puglia in general and you want to learn something about culture, history and want to see beautiful places - this is your Guide!

We enjoyed a half day walking tour of Matera with our charming guide Giorgio, after several friends insisted we make time to visit Matera during our recent holiday in Puglia. As we drove through the outskirts of Matera, its attractions weren’t immediately obvious. But as soon as we met up with Giorgio and started our tour at a stunning viewpoint over the ancient Sassi neighbourhood, it became clear that this place is unlike anywhere else we’ve seen (including the cave dwellings of Granada and Guadix in southern Spain). Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Matera’s long history began in the Palaeolithic era as people settled in the natural caves of the area. Giorgio described the ancient city as a kind of multi-layered lasagne, with dwellings and neighbourhoods built on top of each other. In the 1950s, Matera was declared “the shame of Italy” due to its then-open sewers and squalid living conditions, and residents were forcibly evacuated into new apartments. Over subsequent decades, with the help of Italian government and UNESCO funding, the former humble cave dwellings are slowly being renovated into quirky dwellings and stylish hotels and restaurants. We went inside several of the caves, both in their abandoned state and following refurbishment, and learned about the difficult lives of the former residents. Giorgio is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide who speaks excellent English. He was keen to share the history of this intriguing town, which these days is a popular location for filmmakers due to its atmospheric warren of cobbled streets and cave dwellings. The Temptation of Christ, Ben Hur and the most recent James Bond film were all shot here. Giorgio also gave us an excellent recommendation for lunch after our tour. We plan to return to Puglia soon and would love to book more tours with Giorgio.
