Gracias a Richard, Lynn, Matt y Patrick. Slainte!

Dear Pablo, Thank you for your review and we are sorry to read of your feedback. It would have been great if you had raised your concerns with us at the dive centre when you returned from your dive so that we had the opportunity to discuss this in more detail with you. Just for clarity, your review is of the Discover Scuba Diving experience when in fact you dived with us as a certified diver in a group of other certified divers. As certified divers, you are able to dive independently, which means you have a buddy and you take care of each other during the dive whether you have a guide or not. As with any sport, every person’s capability at each diving level is different. So whilst certain expectations come with being a certified open water diver, one person with just 4 dives may be a more competent diver than someone with 20 dives, even though you may expect the opposite. As a dive centre when we take online bookings, we ask what certification level the diver is and how many dives they have. We have to assume that people provide us with accurate information, do not lie to us and do not withhold anything that may be important for us to know. Certification cards are of course checked before going diving and to become certified, everyone must satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire that states they are fit for diving. It is important to note here that people can still be certified with certain medical conditions as long as they have a dive doctor’s authorisation and that they can meet the performance requirements of the course. For your dive tour, the group of 4 was yourself with 10 dives, your girlfriend with 4 dives (open water certification is 4 dives not 3) and the father and son with around 10 dives also. As a company we organise our groups with no more than 4 divers based on similar experience. In fact the information we were provided by the father was that his son also dives every weekend helping at a dive centre so actually we would have considered them to be more experienced than you. Unfortunately the father failed to tell us that his son had a condition called Apraxia which affects his motor movements. This was only mentioned to Samira AFTER the first dive when it was clear the boy had struggled underwater. There was absolutely no indication that there were anything that may impede the boy’s diving from his speech or interaction with Samira or indeed us when we collected them from their resort. After the first dive, Samira did everything we would have expected her to do, which was talk to the father and explain to him that as a certified diver, his son should be able to support himself and fin independently, be able to manage his air, work with his buddy etc. In trying to ensure she continued to provide a high level of customer service to the rest of the group, she took the time to explain to you both the situation and to confirm to you that the boy WAS a certified diver (as you were stating differently) and that by holding his hand would support him but wouldn’t impact your 2nd dive. She apologised to you because of the situation that had been created as a surprise to everyone and not because she or the company had done anything wrong. She did everything she could to try and keep everyone happy, whilst managing the situation safely. She absolutely did check your air with you (even though air management is the diver’s responsibility with their buddy) and pointed out the variety of marine life that we have in abundance at Sail Rock, even finding a shy yellow box fish to show you which are small and hidden under coral. On the day of your dives at Sail Rock, there was over 20m+ visibility but a stronger than normal current. As is the case with the ocean, currents change all the time. Generally we have mild or no current at Sail Rock but this cannot be foreseen and Sail Rock is absolutely a dive site that is suitable for open water divers and can be dived at all depths from 5m-40m. There is no requirement to dive deep at Sail Rock, as we also explained to you and your girlfriend otherwise if you felt the dive site was unsuitable for a 12 year old certified open water diver then it would be unsuitable for any certified open water diver. As explained above, we see all sorts of divers, sometimes those with 300+ dives who find a current difficult and require help. This is when our excellent crew step in and will always assist. To be honest, we do feel you are not really showing any compassion or empathy to a 12 year old boy who was having difficulties or in fact looking at what Samira actually did in going over and beyond her duty. She did everything we would expect of an Instructor (not a guide, which is the capacity she was working that day) and if it had been your girlfriend having trouble in the current because she is a new open water diver, you would have expected Samira to have helped her too. You seem to have used our review forum as an opportunity to attack the father about his son, whilst blaming Samira for doing the best job she could have done, when the circumstances were thrown at her. Yet after the dive tour, when we sat together eating lunch and completing log books there was plenty of opportunity for you to share any concerns with us directly however instead you told Samira that you had enjoyed your dives and sought her advice on both yours and your girlfriends diving skill. We assume you asked this because you trusted Samira to give you an honest opinion. It is important for us to be clear, that as a PADI dive centre we do not have the authority to revoke someone’s license, that is the role of PADI who can assess whether the certification has been appropriately issued. We are able to raise a quality assurance issue with PADI if we believe someone has been inappropriately certified and you are also able to contact PADI and make the same report if you choose. We are happy to discuss this further with you if you would like to contact us via email or telephone. Best regards, The Dive Academy
