Sandakphu is a fascinating place amongst the Himalayan Mountain Range. Every trekker can begin trekking journey to Sandakphu as the difficulty is easy/moderate. The standard itinerary is Tonglu/Tumling-Kalipokhri-Sadakphu-Gurdum-Srikhola. Dhotrey, Phalut Gorkhey can also be added to the itinerary depending on the trip days.

Some really bad and outdated jeeps(named land rovers) work here. And again the same reason- unions....atleast get some good card people... The road to tonglu is excellent condition. Rates and charges have showed in photo. U can reach manebhanjan and the take this. Avoid the homestays, they are extremely poor condition and widely used without much cleanliness. Bed bugs, and similar problems cant be rules out. But views, sunrise, sunsets are beautiful.

Sandakphu (11,930 feet), also known as Sandakpur, is a small Himalayan hamlet situated on the top of a mountain peak in the Singalila Ridge and Singalila National Park (famous for red Panda) on the border between India and Nepal. Sandakphu is the highest point of West Bengal. Situated above the normal clouds level, Sandakphu summit offers a pristine view of four of the five highest peaks of the world, namely, Everest, Kanchenjunga (the entire range), Lhotse and Makalu on clear days. The mountain formation is famously known as 'Sleeping Buddha' as the appearance resembles the head, face, upper body and feet of the sage Lord Buddha. The azure sky, green forests and the massive snowcapped Himalayan peaks make the place a photographer's paradise and a nature lover's dream destination.
The only safe transport to Sandakphu is the local multi terrain vehicle Land Rover. The roads are good from Manebhanjan till Gairibas. After that, the last 12 kilometers' journey from Gairibas to Sandakphu is a nightmare. Being a trekking route, roads are almost nonexistent here. Even Land Rovers take nearly 1.5 hours to cover this 12 kms of bumpy, boulder filled narrow track. The road is dangerous and highly accident prone. We chose to visit the place on 30th December, ie, the middle of winter. The temperature was below freezing point (-3℃), a strong chilly wind was freezing us down to our bones, there was a cable fault resulting in no electricity and no room heater... but the surrealistic scenic beauty of the place compensated for all our discomforts. It was heavenly to watch Sleeping Buddha on a clear, full moon night followed by a spectacular sunrise on the following morning. Layers of warm garments failed to stop our shivering and chattering of teeth. But who cared when so much beauty was there in front for the eyes to behold?
Sandakphu trip should preferably be avoided by people with attitude sickness and any respiratory disease. This remote place is also not suitable for comfort lovers as the few hotels present here can't always offer even the basic necessities. But if you are a none-too-complaining adventurous traveller and an ardent nature lover then Sandakphu is the right place for you.

The trekking route to Sandakphu, the highest peak in West Bengal, runs through the Singalila National Park. The southern entry point to the park is at the Forest Check Post at Manebhanjang, 51 km from Darjeeling. We have to pay the entry charges at the check post, which was about ₹100 per head per day in March 2020 when we went. Forest and trek guides can be hired from the town. The 32 km trek route from Manebhajang to Sandakphu (height about 11,930 feet above mean sea level) and Phalut (21 km from Sandakphu) can be done over 2 to 4 days depending on the route, weather and your capacity to trek, and an equal number of days for the return.

We decided to do the Jeep Safari, with a bit of trekking. We had to hire a 4 wheel drive Mahindra Jeep or a 1960s vintage British make Land Rover, with an experienced driver from the Manebhanjang Land Rover Association. The Jeep can cover the 32 km uphill climb in 4 or 5 hours with tea stops on the way. Since the ascent is very steep and bumpy, from 7000 feet to almost 12000 feet, we decided to take a couple of night halts to acclimatise ourselves. Keep in mind that the road is very rocky and uneven, and not advisable for the very old and infirm. There are some lodges and trekker’s huts at small villages on the Indo-Nepal border, along the route. We passed the villages of Chitray, Meghma, Gairibas, Tonglu, Tumling, Kalipokhri, Bhikaybanjang and finally reached Sandakphu.

The beautiful views of the forests of bamboo, pine and fir trees, with the blooming rhododendron flowers in March and April, and the grand views of the Himalayan peaks of the Kanchenjunga range, Lhotse, Makalu and Everest along the route more than made up for the inconveniences of a bumpy Jeep ride and the cold nights in the mountains. Spotting wild animals like snow leopard, red panda or black bears is a rarity but they do inhabit the Singalila National Park. Sighting birds like Khalij Pheasant, Wood Pigeons, Scarlet Minivets and Babblers was more common.
