What an absolutely amazing place and how tourism should be done! Money goes to the community and you can honestly just relax, learn, smile and take it all in! If you’re blessed enough to have Therese, she’s an amazing young woman and one of the most passionate guides I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I got married there (in a traditional ceremony- not real!) and had an absolute blast. I went there as a solo female traveller- felt so welcomed and enjoyed every minute! A total hands on learning experience and A must do if you’re in Rwanda.

We learned about Rwanda daily life. The singing, drumming and dancing were wonderful. There was even a wedding ceremony. The whole experience was a lot of fun and entertaining. They have you participate which added to the experience.

Das Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village ist ein kleines Dorf resp. Openair Museum, welches einen Einblick in die ruandische Kultur und traditionelle Lebensweise gewährt. Das Ganze ist zwar sehr touristisch, aber dennoch eine nette Abwechslung nach dem Gorillatrekking. Gleich am Eingang wurden wir von geschminkten Mitarbeitern in traditioneller Kleidung mit einem wilden Trommeltanz begrüsst. Anschliessend führte uns ein Guide durch die Anlage. Wir erhielten die Möglichkeit, mit einem Bogen zu schiessen, Getreide zu mahlen und Bananenbier herzustellen. Letzteres kann man auch kaufen, den Preis sollte man aber verhandeln, sonst ist man gleich USD 10 für eine Flasche los. Beim traditionellen Tanz und der königlichen Hochzeit werden die Besucher zum Mitmachen animiert, allerdings darf man auch ablehnen und einfach nur zuschauen. Am Ende führt der Rundgang noch bei einem Souvenirmarkt vorbei, dessen Einkünfte gemäss Guide dem lokalen Dorf zu Gute kommen. Die freundlichen Mitarbeiter sind übrigens teilweise ehemalige Wilderer, die hier als Schauspieler eine neue Arbeit gefunden haben. Schon allein ihretwegen, lohnt sich ein Besuch des Dorfes.

This is a nice stop. If you’re in the area, they show what the village life is, and was like in this area for Rwanda. You can see a replica of the kings palace, dancing, and villagers preparing food in local style hats. They even sold us some banana wine which was really tasty. It’s obviously very touristy, but still lots of fun and educational.

Amazing experience. Lots that I learn’t about the culture and heritage. Understood a lot after reading and being told. Dance was fantastic. Very friendly people. Very good English speaking

A lovely “cultural” village in the vicinity of volcanoes national park. Staffed by former poachers and well worth a visit to relax, have fun, and understand more about Rwanda’s proud cultural history.
I found myself shedding a tear when reading the testimonies of former poachers. This village plays a massive part in the conservation of the gorillas and any support provided is much appreciated.

We visited the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village as part of a two-day visit to the Volcanoes National Park area. This experience provides a taste of various Rwandan cultural experiences -- grinding grain in a traditional manner, a brief history of Rwanda, cultural drumming/dancing, Banana beer making, a traditional wedding ceremony and so on. The dancers/presenters are members of the surrounding community. It's a bit hokey at times and a bit touristy but the kids loved it and the singing/dancing/drumming was very good. The presenters made an earnest effort to share everything about their given stations. Overall, it's a good stop along our itinerary in this part of Rwanda and a fun use of a couple hours.

This experience reminded me of a colonial recreation village in the US. I appreciate that the village wants to convey its cultural history, and the villagers jobs are to be actors in this process. I know that my entry fee supports the community, so I was happy to visit. The performances and demonstrations were, in my opinion, a little hokey. Kids would probably love it. But might be scared by some of the tribal Dancing, screaming, and general carrying on.

This was such a fun part of the trip! It's a great cultural tour by former poachers that now support the community. You learn about the past and present of the village. There's also chances to participate in cultural dances, shoot a bow and arrow, drink homemade beer, and meet some of the great people there. highly recommended.

hey there, I am interested in going to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village – how did you go about doing this? Did you book a tour in advance? I was planning on doing the mountain Bisoke hike then going to the village after the hike in the afternoon. I am not sure if you could let me know how you planned your visit?
