probably one of the best mangrove experiences to do if you have the proper team to ferry you and guide you. We loved it, but would not recommend to people who do not whole heartedly embrace nature and the elements (heavy rain, sun, mud, insects, snakes and other reptiles, etc...) .

We did a 3D/2N tour of Sungai Kapur through Bike and Tours last month. It was an incredible and memorable experience! Sungai Kapur is a unique place - it's serene and beautiful and about as untouched an area as you can find in Borneo.
Our guides - Simon, Dr Teo and two specialist nature guides - were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the area. Simon and Dr Teo are also working hard with a local village to reduce plastic pollution, which is great to see.
We were unlucky in some respects, not seeing the flying foxes or dolphins, but the animal encounters we did have were very special. Finding mangrove snakes curled up on tree branches, seeing fish jumping in our torchlight, a stunning firefly display, and even seeing a helmeted hornbill and a baby croodile, seeing leopard cats and a moon rat on a night drive, etc.
The accommodation was much less basic than we expected - en suite bathroom (cold shower, but that's normal in SE Asia), fan, balcony, etc. Towels, bed linen and toiletries are provided. The only down side is that when the generator is off at night, the room becomes very still and humid so it can be difficult to sleep, but it's the trade-off you make for remoteness.
I'd like to give the food an extra special mention - it was superb. The best food we'd had in Borneo so far (with great bread for the on-board breakfast sandwiches!). And the provision of decent New World wine was extremely thoughtful - after 1.5 months of travelling teetotal in SE Asia (I'm not a fan of beer), I was in 7th heaven 😋
We travelled in a small local motorboat. My partner is pretty tall and broad-shouldered, so we struggled to be comfortable after a couple of hours of boating, especially as there was just one cushion between us (which I think has now been sorted out). Our boat also sat low in the water, so we got quite-to-totally wet during every journey. This is not to put anyone off - it's a glorious experience overall - but next time we'll bring ponchos and dry bags with us!
Simon was the soul of courtesy - always asking whether we needed anything. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone who loves wildlife.

Dear once_in_a_while_84,
Many thanks for taking the time to share your positive 3D2N Sungai Kapur tour with Bike and Tours. Indeed it is a magical experience. It is also a tour that takes a village in terms of preparation and execution. We are happy to know that you enjoyed the excursion - wildlife observation, information from Simon and the license nature guides and our community effort and give back by working with the locals and villagers around.
We are glad you included additional information on how you feel about the basicness of the accommodation and boats. At Bike and Tours we take additional care at enriching the experience at Sungai Kapur. The beddings, toiletries and cleaning team are all delivered by us from Lahad Datu to ensure comfort. Even the high quality Scott’s 3 ply toilet paper are all deliveries from Bike and Tours in Lahad Datu to ensure you get as much comfort in a basic facility. Thank you for mentioning that the food as superb as this is a reward we believe travellers should have during the excursion.
Despite all the necessary preparations, we may be challenged by the power supply , water supply, sea condition, etc. Whilst, conducting the tour we always need a Plan B or Plan C should something like this occurs and should we need to adapt to another solution. This of course if experienced by a well-travelled adventurer would take it as adds on to the experience making it more of an excursion rather than a standard tour.
However, this tour will not appeal to those who looks for comfort and the standard 1 to 2 hours river cruise/trekking session. You were blessed with encountering the moonrats, mangrove snakes, fireflies, leopard catsIn and helmeted hornbills. Others may see more than you and some may see less than you. This is above all a primary forest that is thick and lush. It has plenty of space and corners for the wildlife to hide from human encounter. In this sense for those who would like to go for easy wildlife spotting we usually recommend going to Kinabatangan River instead. Or for comfort, to go to Danum Valley Field Center or Tabin Wildlife instead. We make this fairly clear to anyone who inquire or show interest on Sungai Kapur, a long lengthy email with information attachment provided to inform those interested to figure out for themselves if the tour is really for them or otherwise.
As Bike and Tours continue to look for ways to improve our tours, we thank you for the above mentioned feedback from your end. Definitely valuable information in order for us to deliver a much better service in the future.
Till then safe travels and we look forward to welcome you here again in Borneo,
Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Itisha, Simon and team.

To find a place so remote that you wander around for hours without encountering other people was magic and we found that in Sungai Kapur. This tour can only be booked through Bike and Tours, where we booked all our tours in this area. We were told up front that the accommodation would be basic, but with our own room with balcony, fan and private bathroom it was beyond our expectations. The lack of air conditioning had us worried at first, but turned out to be no problem at all.
The area is definitely one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited and we travel a lot. We spend a lot of time in a boat, where we were the lucky ones testing the new and comfortable pillows. My husband even fell asleep sometimes. I needed to stay awake, mesmerized by the reflection of the nipah forest on the water and the sight of so many birds, monkeys and other animals. It was not all boating though. There would also be walks in the dipterocarp forest - where can you still walk in a forest where no other people come and where you would be lost in 3 minutes was it not for the boat drivers? - and night drives looking for wildlife. What made it extra special, was the company of Simon. He cares deeply about preserving this area, about finding ways to involve the local fishermen so they will benefit too. And he still enjoys being here himself so much, as do the very knowledgeable guide Hendry and driver Zahar. It was great to be spending the days here in their company!

Dear Winnie_Man,
Many thanks for taking the time to share your positive experience during the 3D2N tour to Sungai Kapur with Bike and Tours. We are glad that you appreciated the remoteness and beauty of Sungai Kapur by going on the river cruise, jungle trekking and the night drive. You are right sometimes during the river cruise, it is so relaxing that one does tend to have a short snooze : )
Thank you for making it memorable for all of us too as you and your husband are always cheerful and so warm and accommodating.
At Bike and Tours we are always looking for ways to improve our services and tours and your feedback are great motivation for us to strive better. We thank you and we look forward to welcoming you and your husband here in Borneo once again. Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,

Incredibly awesome Tour! You Drive by boat through a remote Mangrove Forest, See the rare flying foxes and then get off the boat at the Riverside on the forest Edge. U can see pitcher plants and one of the rare nearly primary forests in Borneo. Here are still giant emergent Dipterocarp trees Up to 80meters high. Crazy. We Had Lunch in one of the fishing villages.
I would defenetly do that again!

Dear Crazguy,
Many thanks for taking the time to pen down your experience at Sungai Kapur with Bike and Tours. We are so happy to learn that you enjoyed the boating expedition for wildlife observation and nature appreciation. You were indeed very lucky to have spotted the flying foxes as some groups before and after your visit were not able to spot them. It is of course luck dependent as Sungai Kapur is indeed a primary forest and wildlife spotting can be a bit of challenge given the thick and dense jungle for the animals to hide.
We thank you again for taking on this tour and we look forward to welcome you here in the near future.
Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Itisha, Simon and team

We had a lovely stay at Simon´s and Ithisha's guesthouse, which is a jewel in the rather shabby looking town of Lahad Datu. The place is quite, clean and the food is excellent. The dinner was served on banana leave with lost of specialities from Sarawak and Sabah. Even if you can´t go on a trip to Sungai Kapur you must visit this accomodation otherwise you miss out something extraordinary! Also the breakfast is beautifully presented.
The trip to Sungai Kapur was worthwhile! you go on a boots tour and than for a walk in the jungle. Since there are no other tourist it is a very special experience. Don´t miss it.

Dear Petrarhino
Many thanks for taking the time to share with travellers alike on your experience at our B&B and also the Sungai Kapur tour with Bike and Tours. We are glad you enjoyed our place and also the tour in Sungai Kapur. Indeed, it being secluded and away from the tourist crowd – the fact that the jungles there are primary and wild makes it extra special experience for wildlife observation and nature appreciation.
We thank you once again for taking on the Sungai Kapur tour with Bike and Tours and we look forward to have you here again in the future.
Till then safe travels.

At arrival we had one night in Simon´s and Ithisha's guesthouse, which is a true oasis in the small town of Lahad Datu. Already at our arrival day, we felt immediately home. A highlight was the lovingly super delicious dinner served on banana leaves in the evening. We felt like kings, because every wish or empty bowl was fulfilled. Freshly strengthened we then went to our first the adventure to "Bukit Piton" to see wild orang utans. Everything was well organized and after about 1 h drive from Lahad Datu we were already awaited by a pick-up truck with local guides at the entrance of the reserve to do a 3 h scouting tour for orang utans and other animals like elephants and hormbills on the way to our camp. Dr. Teo was our constant companion to inform us eco-friendly about the land and its people and above all about the reforestation of the rainforest. We were also allowed to plant trees and thereby contribute to the preservation of the rainforest. After dinner, we went on a varied night ride until midnight, before we felt tired in simple but clean and by mosquito net protected beds for our unfortunately short sleep only. Because, at 5 o'clock in the morning, strengthened by a comprehensive breakfast, we went on a reconnaissance tour again. First, from the pick-up and then from close range, whilst wild walking through the rainforest, we could watch an orang. 5 stars for this tour, even though Bukit Piton is mainly secondary rainforest.
After another relaxing night in the lovely bike and tours guesthouse we went to our next Adventure - the Sungai Kapur Expedition. An absolutely exciting 3D/2N tour in a tourist unspoiled area with Nipah forests, mangroves and primary rainforest. On this tour, we explored the beauties of this region with small longboats that were driven by local fishermen. we also walked through the primary rainforst. We saw lots of animals and a phantastic vegetation, especially the kapur trees. In the 3 days we saw no other tourists in the area. We also had our most delicious seafood served by Hadjis people in a small fisherman village. For us the tour was a phantastic lifetime experience.
We can warmly recommend Simon and Itisha (bikeandtours) to all people who are looking for a nature-friendly and individual tour. One enjoys professional planning and performance of the tour, as well as the warmth and hospitality in their guesthouse.

Dear DBaus,
Many thanks for taking the time to pen down your positive experience at Sungai Kapur and Bukit Piton with Bike and Tours. We feel privileged to be able to take you on tours to the wild and away from the tourist crowd. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed both tours and your stay at Bike and Tours B&B.
Sungai Kapur is indeed as you described an unspoiled natural paradise. As the place is very remote the facilities are rather basic. It takes a village to conduct this tour successfully. At Bike and Tours we try our extreme best to make your 3D2N tour at Sungai Kapur the most comfortable as we possibly can. Recce tours after recce tours has been conducted at our own accord to ensure that you get to experience the wild Borneo in comfort. So we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour and had an amazing time in Sungai Kapur.
We thank you once again for taking on the Sungai Kapur tour with Bike and Tours and we look forward to have you here again in the future.
Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,

Glühwürmchen verwandelten manche Mangroven in Weihnachtsbäume.
Danke !

Dear andrearosin28,
Our heartfelt thank you for taking the time to personally share your experience on the 3D2N tour to Sungai Kapur with Bike and Tours. We thank you for giving us the opportunity to organize a few tours for you and your family during this time. The Sungai Kapur tour is out of the standard tour as it takes you to the remote area of Borneo. Perhaps this is the only place in Borneo that has all 3 primary forests – the Nipah, the Mangrove and the Kapur Forest in 1 location. We are so glad that during this tour you were blessed to see the milky way, the fireflies and other wildlife.
Many thanks for the stunning photos you gracefully captured during this tour. It truly shows the experience and emotional sentiment of the location.
Thank you for making this tour not just memorable from you and family but also a memorable event for Bike and Tours to introduce and conduct the tour during this time.
We look forward to have you and your family here again in the future.
Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Itisha, Simon and team

We decided to meet the beauties of Sabah by means of a package of Danum Valley, Sungai Kapur, Bukit Piton and the famous Kinabatangan organized by Bikeandtours. Especially for the DV, Simon was very helpful, because we, as an outdoor family with two children 10 and 12, did not necessarily want to stay in the luxurious Rainforest Lodge and Simon unceremoniously organized places in the dorms of the DVFC. There, we could then experience the everyday life of scientists. Already, the transport to DV with driver and pickup was an experience, as we could observe eagles, turtles and an extremely large monitor lizard. Our driver was a really perfect scout and everything went smoothly. He also responded to every request, such as stops for taking pictures etc. Although, he spoke very little English, he gave us a very pleasant atmosphere and it was interesting for us to remember how it all worked out. The next morning, he drove us in front of the other organizers to the Sunrise Observation Point to track the awakening of the rainforest. Really unique! Before we went to the next stages, we had one night each in Simon´s and Ithisha's guesthouse. A true oasis in the small town of Lahad Datu, which is an ideal starting point for the beauties of Sabah. Already on our arrival day, we felt immediately at ease. The coronation however, was the lovingly super delicious dinner served on banana leaves in the evening. Cooked was a local food, from which we got the individual ingredients explained by Ithisha. We felt like kings, because every wish or empty bowl was fulfilled. Freshly strengthened in civilization, we went now to the next adventure - The Sungai Kapur Expedition. A 3D/2N tour of a tourist unspoiled area with Nipah forests, mangroves and rainforest. On this tour, we mainly explored the beauties of this region with small longboats that were driven by local fishermen. We also drove river arms, which had not even driven by Simon and team. Apart from the people in the village, where we also got our most delicious seafood in the world, we met nobody on this tour. For us, the contact with the locals and their original life was a real highlight of this tour, as well as the rainy sunrise on the longboats. Without further ado, the longboats became a floating coffee amidst Nipah forests. A really, memorable experience. We stayed in a house of the Forestry department on the edge of the rainforest, where we were well cared for by Simon and his team.
After another night in Simons Guesthouse, we went on to Bukit Piton to board orangutans. Once again, everything was well organized and after about 1 h drive from Lahad Datu we were already awaited by a pick-up truck with local guides at the entrance of the reserve to do a 3 h scouting tour for orang and other animals on the way to our camp. Already on the trip, we could enjoy the first contact with our shaggy, red conspecifics before we had a delicious dinner, prepared by the wife of Dr. Teo. Dr. Teo was our constant companion to inform us eco-friendly about the land and its people and above all about the reforestation of the rainforest. We too, were allowed to plant trees and thereby contribute to the preservation of the rainforest. 5 stars for this, even though Bukit piton is mainly secondary rainforest. This made it much easier to watch all the animals. Not to say, you have almost 100% guarantee of orang sighting. Of course, the guides also have eyes like eagles.
From there, we went to Kinabatangan, the most touristy of all destinations, but still worth a visit. There, it is most comfortable to observe animals, especially macaques and proboscis monkeys. We were even lucky to see Orangs again, but much further away by boat compared to Bukit. Like most of the tours/people, we also explored the area comfortably by boat. In the morning, our transfer from Bukit directly to Kinabatangan was also an experience, as we were taken by a local minibus to a roundabout, where in turn a minibus of our accommodation should wait to pick us up for the remaining 50 km. Everything went well as usual. Dr. Teo settled everything Simon had planned for us on site, such as to stop the right bus.
We can warmly recommend Simon and his team (bikeandtours) to all those people who are looking for a nature-friendly, individual and familiar Experience/Trip. One enjoys professional planning and execution, warmth in his and Ithishas guesthouse as well as an insight into the Bornean life. By the way, the money for the booked tours contributes to the preservation of the rainforest, since bikeandtours dissipates a share of it. We have trouble finding anything that could be done better. Because, there is nothing for us that can be done better.
Thank you again for all!

By the way, the money for the booked tours contributes to the preservation of the rainforest, since bikeandtours dissipates a share of it. We have trouble finding anything that could be done better. Because, there is nothing for us that can be done better.
Thank you again for all!

Dear lrosin,
Our heartfelt thank you for taking the time to write down this informative information on your tours to Sungai Kapur, Bukit Piton, Danum Valley and Kinabatangan with Bike and Tours.
We thank you for giving us the trust and opportunity to conduct a few different tours at the highlights and remote areas of Sabah. We are glad that you and your family were very open and took on the Sungai Kapur tour with much openness and embraced the idea of adventure, wildlife discovery and nature appreciation at primary forest of Sungai Kapur. Sungai Kapur as you said it is indeed an unspoiled paradise. Our 3D2N tour to Sungai Kapur was crafted to give one extensive river cruise and jungle trekking. This is not just for wildlife observation purposes but to appreciate what’s left in the jungles of Borneo. In addition to that the tour also contributes its portion to community and conservation efforts towards the locals and villagers around the Sungai Kapur region.
We are glad you enjoyed and appreciated all the tours conducted for you and your family by Bike and Tours. We look forward to have you here again in the future.
Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Itisha, Simon and team

Dear lurchiontour,
A huge thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience during the 3D2N tour to Sungai Kapur with Bike and Tours. It is indeed as you say a location that is off the beaten path. In fact Sungai Kapur is potentially one of the last forest in Sabah Borneo that is enriched with different type of virgin forests – the Mangrove Forest, the Nipah Forest and the Kapur Forest. Given its remoteness, this only means that one will be away from the luxuries of being connected online, this is not a high class resort with butlers and porter service. Having said that, this tour is not for the creature of comfort. These tour is made for those who are prepared for an adventure, those who would take being splashed by the seawater as part of the adventure. This tour is made for those who are open that should things do not work out as planned (eg: weather or sea condition does not permit) that we will resort to another solution. This tour is more of an expedition than a tour.
We are indeed very happy that both of you are open minded and well-travelled adventurers
Who not only took in our advice to discover Sungai Kapur but enjoyed this tour tremendously with Bike and Tours.
We look forward to have both of you here again in the future.
Till then safe travels.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Itisha, Simon and team
