We visited the museum today (quite quickly because it was almost closing) and it was really worth going! It has really nice picts stones, the staff is really nice and we had a lot of explanations. There was also a small exhibition about the Book of Kells and explanations about ongoing archaeological research !

Fascinating gem of a museum that brings to life the Pictish people that lived here 1500 years ago and more. An important early Christian Centre making and exporting vellum for beautiful illuminated books like the Book of Kells. Unforgettable visit followed by beautiful lunch in Tarbat Bistro and Bar.

This museum has a split personality. On the one hand, it has an amazing collection of Pictish stones, and an underground burial. On the other hand, the site has a long history as a monastic center of the arts, including a scriptorium (if that's the right word) where they MADE vellum, quills, and ink. The evidence has led them to a pretty well supported claim the the Book of Kells was created here, not on Iona. Go see - the evidence is compelling.

Breathtaking artifacts, we couldn't believe there was so much history to learn about here! Knowledgeable staff and a thoughtfully crafted exhibition. Lots of things to do nearby and the wonderful staff signposted us to plenty of them.

Went whilst we were staying in Portmahomak. Really well staffed and good knowledge. Well worth a look and chat with people. Nice little craft shop. Really enjoyed the history and findings of the dig. Highly recommended.

Fascinating place with some wonderful exhibits. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Not a bad entry price either. Special thanks to the lovely staff member that gave my son one of her own biscuits when he was having a type 1 diabetic hypo, and he’d stupidly forgot to bring anything with him.

This is a fantastic museum, displaying artefacts from local archaeological digs. On the must-see list: the Discovery Centre has a new display on the Six-Headed Burial from the 14th century, including facial reconstruction of two people whose remains were found at the site. Volunteers who staff the museum are knowledgeable, and the wee shop has lovely items.

Excellent discovery centre. The staff have phenomenal knowledge of the local Pictish and clan history. We learnt so much and would recommend the centre to anyone visiting the area.

Very interesting museum about the Picts of Scotland, stone carvings, maps etc, they are still waiting on the return of some artefacts from an archaeological dig by York University, hopefully they get them back soon.
