Please plan to hike around 3miles , its difficult with the small kids. No Strollers access and the last stretch was little tough with the kids. All the views are good during the hike and expected some clear path on the last stretch as its so skiddy.

No longer closed. Relatively easy walk from the main parking lot down to the geothermal springs. Moderate first quarter mile back, since it is uphill. Cool vents at the bottom on the boardwalk, nothing approaching Yellowstone, but cool nonetheless. Good mountain views too, which you don't get at Yellowstone.

This is a moderately strenuous hike and is one of the few areas of Lassen Volcanic National Park that was not badly damaged by the 2021 Dixie Fire. There are burned areas on either side of the trail most of the way in, but the trail itself is in very good shape. The views of the mountains and valleys are spectacular for pretty much the entire hike. It's mostly uphill until you get to the first viewpoint of Bumpass Hell, and then there are 2 options to get to the boardwalk. One is steeper - "Frying Pan Trail" and the other is longer and winding, but less strenuous.

We visited before 9am in the morning, and our reward was having the entire boardwalk trail to ourselves. It was marvelous! We were able to take as many pictures as we wanted, and stare at the various features as long as we wanted, without feeling like we were blocking anyone's view.

This area also reminded us quite a bit of Yellowstone NP, but on a smaller scale.
The hike back up and out of the caldera is very strenuous, but once you are back at the top, it's mostly downhill and easy-breezy the rest of the way. Definitely worth the effort!

Visit it in shadow of the evening to see the full colors. Fairly easy hike of about 3 miles round trip.

We had lovely warm weather, not too hot, for this lengthy hike. We had to wait for a parking spot in the parking lot but were there on a Saturday. But be warned, a car parked in the lot but outside of a designated spot was ticketed. After dipping down into the valley the hike is uphill until you reach the trail down into Bumpass Hill. I highly recommend proper footwear and taking lots of water. There is very little trail etiquette - people walking two abreast on the narrow pathways, passing you with no warning, and not yielding to uphill climbers in tight spots. When you get to the descent there are two choices - a steep trail or a longer more gently sloped trail to the right. This was our choice coming and going.
The thermal area was awesome! It was very well thought out in terms of safety and viewing the natural phenomenon. There is a higher viewing area at the end of the boardwalk, but look for the legal path that takes you a little higher and gives you a wonderful view of the entire area.
Our reward for the climb back up from the site was the downhill walk back to the parking lot!

A can’t-miss stop in Lassen Volcanic. The hike to the thermal area was moderately strenuous and well worth it. The well-designed boardwalk system offers a nice flow and great vantage points for all the activity!

We did this hike as the highlight of our visit to the park. There is a large parking lot with restrooms at the trailhead. The trail is about 3 miles total round trip. It's a lovely hike that includes some ups and downs, but it's not too difficult. We are in our 60s and didn't have a problem. The fist part of the trail goes past Lake Helen and then gradually climbs up to an overlook where there are some great views across the valley. Eventually you arrive at the Bumpass Hell overlook. Wow! You can see everything from above here without needing to go down into the thermal field/boardwalk (and you can even sit on some nice benches here), but it was definitely worth hiking down into the boardwalk area. We made it a loop (or lollipop) as there are two trails down. The pools are awesome...turquoise and steam with accompanying sulphur smells. Highly recommended.

My wife and I hiked this trail today. The hike to the boardwalk area and back took us 1 1/2 hours with stops for photos. You can continue to Cold Boiling Lake (1.9 miles one way) if you want. The hike to the boardwalk area is pretty easy with a moderate climb back up the hill.

We just spent a day in the Park but this was the highlight for us.

It was very hard to plan whether to go to this out of the way park to hike this trail because it was still not open due to snow on July 1st. It finally opened less than a week before the trip so we decided to take the long trek out there mainly for this trail to experience a mini-Yellowstone since we changed our Yellowstone trip due to flooding disaster. From what I read and short videos, I didn't quite get how much of a drop off one part of the trail was (very scary for a bit for those who don't like heights-section gave me vertigo on way there and when we hit section on way back). Watch your kids carefully. We saw a boy running on the edge across rocks and he slipped. Fortunately, he didn't slip all the way down. That section of the hike, the downhill, uneven section, how hot it was and the constant bugs (though luckily non-biting) in our faces gives this trail a 4 instead of 5 and also renders it not what I would call easy. Btw the bugs were not deterred by our bug spray and many flew in and stayed in car on our hours trip back. I thought they'd never leave. The ones that got in car each time you opened a door were tiny, gnat like bugs,,,again non biting. It would be easier with milder temps I presume and not worrying about falling or kids not listening to danger notices.

I definitely rec brining more water than you think you need. We'd never hiked in 8000+ feet so to be on safe side took a couple Advil an hour before hike. I got out of the car and had this strange feeling hit me at once, but did well on trail as did our child with asthma. We just took it slow. With 3 kids in tow, taking it slow and taking it all in, pausing to snack and enjoy the sights once we finally reached the geothermal area, it took us 4 hours. We weren't racing though. People finishing the hike were commenting to us, calling it hell and some telling us how much longer so that might be some indication it wasn't easy, at least not that day, that high up in around 85 degree temps. Sunscreen, even on tan arms (mine got burned), tons of water, taking it slow and careful with kids (or not taking kids due to drop offs) is ideal with plenty of water and a snack or two, along with a trekking or hiking stick using the metal end (aside for boardwalk area where it gets stuck are all ideal. The scenic highway was so crazy, I closed my eyes almost the whole way and prayed my husband did well. I thought Sequoia was bad...not as bad as this one with sheer drops and no guardrails. It was so bad, we didn't travel much past Bumpass to see anything further up.

As for the good parts, parking on a July Tuesday around 1 was fine. I didn't find the sulphur smell overwhelming. We felt like we were on top of the world. The trail and park were absolutely breathtaking! I feel very fortunate to experience it and have a husband brave enough to drive us up there '-). The physical trail itself isn't that difficult except for the last uneven, bumpy (tree roots, rocks) going downward to boardwalk. Once you finally reach Bumpass Hell, it becomes worth it. Although I wished it was their normal, cool temps and I wouldn't rec going on an 80+degree day, it was very worth it and we were proud of our accomplishment! Two of three kids enjoyed it...the other not so much so that took up some time here and there. I would not take kids under 8 (ours are 10, 10, and 13) here unless they are strapped to you or you are wearing the little ones, but I'm a heights scaredy cat so keep that in mind. Wanted to jump in icy lake afterwards because we were buggy, sweaty and gross, but aside from that so amazing! We couldn't understand why there was snow we could touch, yet we were melting from heat...another interesting aspect of the trail.

This was our favorite hike in the park due to the terrain as well as the volcanic activity. It’s a relatively easy hike, with just a small uphill climb. The signage detailing the trail is excellent.
