We toured the Greenwood Great House while on vacation. Every vacation my wife says I need to learn something, so this was my something LOL. The tour guide was great and of course very knowledgeable. There are so many antique musical instruments, amazing furniture, and the surprising part to me is how open it all is.
When we were there, we actually did a tour with a school group from Nigral, a wonderful group of kids and they really made it fun. That was our bonus :)
This is worth the visit and you will some some amazing views from the house!

My visit to the Greenwood Great House in Jamaica was a truly remarkable experience. The house's rich historic history was brought to life by our amazing guide, making it an unforgettable journey through time.
The Greenwood Great House is steeped in history, and our guide's excellent narration skillfully unfolded its past. Their knowledge and storytelling ability made every room and artifact come alive with stories of the past. From the antique furniture to the impressive architecture, I felt like I had stepped back in time.
I highly recommend visiting the Greenwood Great House to anyone interested in history and culture. It's a place where the past comes alive through excellent narration, and you leave with a deeper appreciation of Jamaica's heritage. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this treasure; it's an experience you won't forget.

What an amazing home! So much rich history in one unassuming place. Everywhere we turned there was stories to be told about the history of this or that. You could get up close and even hear many of the musical instruments play and the time clock work. It was just amazing. Such a unique property that obviously is loved by its owners. I thought it was so neat that they actually live in the house, in the original owners room and bed. The couple who owns the home offered some lemonade and rum punch in the bar out back. The pool area is beautiful and you could see how special this home is. Beautiful gardens and interiors and the most spectacular view!! So glad we booked this excursion on our Disney Cruise!!

A large but plain house compared to some of the same era and history.
House is still lived in apparently although difficult to see how it is maintained as a museum and a home. Lots of complete and well furnished rooms. The novel is the musical instruments demonstrated by the guide.
The house was open specially for our group which was then split into two. That said the groups were still too big and not everyone could get into the rooms being talked about nor see items being talked about or pointed to which was a real shame.
A lame rum punch was served in the bar area which contained several artefacts referring to the slave era.
Not much of a garden to walk around either, or at least that we were directed to.
We were warned incessantly for our safety and therefore and unfortunately this was our only taste of Jamaica and only ever likely to be.

The house is well furnished and well maintained. The guide was knowledgeable. The grounds were minimal, but the house was interesting enough by itself to justify the $20 ticket. Biggest drawback is the road up to the house: narrow, winding and torturous.

It was a wonderful trip back in time and all the artifact are kept in pristine condition. Our guide Thora was excellent her knowledge told a detailed story that one could get lost in. I would highly recommend her, over all it was a great experience especially if you love history.

Steeped in Jamaican Great House history this hidden gem is perched above the once upon a time sugar cane fields and commands a 180 degree view of the coast. As you gaze out upon the hillside below from the 70 foot long veranda you can well imagine the Barrett masters surveying their slave powered estate that stretched for 12 miles along the coast. “The master always sees” rings true and images come unbidden of power, wealth and the extreme poverty inflicted upon thousands of slaves.
This estate is now privately owned by a lovely older couple who’ve had it for 46 years now. Beneath its storied roof and behind walls that could tell stories you’ll find a gorgeous wood inlaid Edwardian Piano, a penny organ, a man trap, wind organ, music box that plays big discs, antique maps, floors of quarried Jamaican marble and so much more. Our entry fee was $20 and was money well spent. Don’t let the deteriorating roads and exterior of the home dissuade you. This estate has been kept up by one couple for 46 years and they’ve done a great job.

Amazing property with a lot of original features and pieces. The owner and tour guide really know their stuff and have a true passion for the site, the exhibits and the history. It brings into stark focus how much the British Empire and these well known historical figures benefited from the bloodshed, atrocities and exploitation of the slave era; unfortunately this is not discussed as much as it should in the UK.
Greenwood Great House is a real hidden gem and absolutely worth a visit far more than other sensationalist great houses on the island. Thank you Bob for your hospitality and warm welcome. Your love of Jamaica really comes across.

The house is a fascinating glimpse into the slave era of Jamaica. The tour guide is full of facts and can answer any question you come up with. I particularly appreciated the balanced and honest take of the tour on the nuanced and complex relationship between the Molten Barretts and their 2000 slaves. For example, we learned about “Whistler’s Way”, the path between the kitchen and dining hall, in which the enslaved workers had to whistle so that their masters knew that they were not eating the food. At the same time, the owners educated their slaves and so perhaps this was why this home was not burned down during the slave rebellion of 1831.
If you are interested in learning more about the country from a local, I recommend striking up a conversation with Bob, the owner and bartender. He has lived a worldly, well-informed man who has lived a fascinating life.

The site is somewhat challenging to get to as the road is poor. Ring the bell at the gate for service. The house gardens are enchanting. We enjoyed learning the history of the site and appreciated the unique furnishings. If you like musical technology, you will be able to see and hear several old pieces here including a wind harp and very early player pianos and record players. At the end, we enjoyed a refreshing drink from the bar. The views were amazing!

What is the best way to get there from the cruise port in Falmouth?

Nueva York, Estado de Nueva York8 contribuciones
A taxi from the port in the easiest way. You can arrange in advance. Several listed on trip advisor or find one when you are there. Ensure they are registered taxi drivers and negotiate the round trip rate in advance of departure. Hope that helps!

What is the taxi fare from the cruise port in montego Bay to greenwood house? Are taxis back available at the house or would I have to get the taxi to wait,? The ship is offering the trip for fourfourty pounds but unless there is a big difference in price and ease of travel I would prefer to be independent.

Thanks for your interest in touring the house. Taxi fares vary -- would recommend getting in touch with JUTA for contact information for a taxi driver. There are no taxis on site so if you hire a driver, they would have to wait.

where is the Great House located?
Rachel B
Nueva York, Estado de Nueva York8 contribuciones
We are located on the border of St. James and Trelawny about fifteen miles from Montego Bay and seven miles from Falmouth.
Coming from Montego Bay, turn right into Greenwood and look for signs for Greenwood Great House. We are one mile from the main road. As with most secondary roads in Jamaica, expect a few bumps -- but we promise the drive will be well worth it.

Taxi is the best way - the house is quite far from the A1 main highway and so I suggest that the taxi wait for you. Tour is about 45min but leave about 1 hour. Last week when I was there the cost was USD$20. The credit card machine was not working so best to bring cash
