We had a very scary experience here… My partner and I came without a tour. As we got close and drove through the small village, a group of locals came to our car. We stopped, and one guy who said he is Milan Simon, said that he is a tour guide and asked if we could drive him up the hill. My partner (nicer than me) said yes and the guy got in. He was super talkative and friendly but something felt off and I wouldn’t answer his question about where we were staying. He insisted we needed him to be our guide and we insisted on telling him no. We stopped the car and it got tense. We asked him nicely to leave, then more and more strongly. Then we saw a guy walking down the road with a machete and cried out to him for help. We said that the guy wouldn’t get out of our car. Machete guy firmly grabbed the guy in our car and got him out. We tried driving away but the road is steep and rocky (you need 4WD) and the guy kept following us, as machete guy carried on his way. We were so freaked out by how aggressive he was that we turned around and never made it to the trail head. After, we noticed that the guy had left behind scissors in the back seat. Chilling. On our way out, we tipped machete guy for saving us.
On a side note, to get there we found that the AllTrails map MUCH more useful than google maps, which doesn’t have some of the roads listed.

I was disappointed that this wasn’t an opportunity through my resort since it looked so nice. I was able to hike it and had a wonderful experience with Exciting Tours St Lucia. They were great. My driver and my guide were both knowledgeable and patient. My hiking experience was wonderful. I highly recommend them and the trail

We went on a tour of En Bas Saut trail with John from Paradise Excursions. It was around 8km from were we parked, down into the valley (around 1200 stairs I believe!) and back. It was absolutely stunning and we were lucky with the wildlife that we saw - forest crabs, lots of birds, interesting insects and lots of lovely plants. The waterfall was gorgeous and refreshing. We didn't see another person the whole time we were there. We are very glad we went with a guide as we wouldn't have found it otherwise.

Like so many others we thought this would be easier to find! I had done lots of research, had Google maps and Maps.me, taken into account everyone's comments and we had been driving around the island for nearly two weeks covering all must see sights and many more on all coasts. Did we need a guide... Nooo of course not! We were staying in Soufriere so thought it was just up the road. Did any of this information help. Nope. It is the initial finding of the track that is hard and then the realisation of how long it is and how hard it is to get to the fabled picnic table! We had almost given up but pulled over to ask a lady the way and she said she would show us. Turns out she was waiting for a bus with her son so we saved her a wait and had better aircon! We dropped her off and she arranged for a young lad to guide us. Without Kenneth we would probably not have found it, or given up halfway! It is worth the effort. Glorious rainforest and unbelievable sights, but you do need to be pretty fit with good shoes! Kenneth Jonas aka Tarzan is a delight! He is very knowledgeable and was happy to keep things at our rate - enviably he did not even break a sweat! He shared his knowledge of plants and although we did not see any parrots we did hear some. We did see some fiesty water crabs on the way down! My advice is to go but to head to Migny and ask for a guide there. Preferably a very likable lad called Kenneth (Instagram #kennethjonasakatarzan)!!

My boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to go see the Toraille waterfall but by the time we got there it was so beyond packed with tourists from the ships- we decided to just keep driving to see what adventures we may find and BOOM we come through a town to the end of this road that looked kinda sketchy. this boy from the town approached us because we obviously looked lost but said if we kept driving up this sketchy looking road it would take us somewhere beautiful- we ended up driving up this rocky road for a bit and it led us to the Edmund rainforest en bas saut trail. we paid a small entrance fee and decided not to take a guide as we like to do things on our own. The hike is Beautiful- we had the forest to ourselves- its about a 35 min hike down a lot of stairs in a beautiful setting and you eventually get to a beautiful deserted waterfall that is basically untouched! We took the longer loop out when we were done and it was absolutely stunning although it lacks signs so we kinda just hoped for the best and it worked out wonderfully! HIGHLY RECCOMEND!

This is not an easy trail to find! - as usual in St Lucia there are no signs, until you get high up In the hills and reach the trailhead itself. We did find it eventually, after asking enough locals the way to ensure that everyone in the area knew a middle-aged white couple were looking for the rainforest trail. The start is above and east of Fond St Jaques and then the small village of Migny. We were put off by some of the slightly alarmist reviews we’d read on Trip Advisor and left our car where the tarmac’d road ended and turned into a rougher but still wide track: we needn’t have done - much of the next 2+ miles of steadily climbing track is fully concreted and the rest is drivable with care in an ordinary 2WD car like ours. It’s an interesting walk past still- cultivated fields, more overgrown former plantations and abandoned and poignant old wooden houses: it’s a hot walk though - even when the sunny weather was interrupted by a brief heavy shower of ‘liquid sunshine’, and despite walking through forest for some of it. It was a relief to see the track level out at the top, where there’s the first sign to En Bas Saut. From there it’s an easy half to three quarter mile level walk to the marked trailhead. We did then walk down the first few hundred steps into the rainforest before eating our sandwiches, but we realised that if you want to have the energy for a 2000-step descent and then the same distance back up you really do need to drive to the trailhead first, and ideally arrange a guide for the trail itself (probably down in Migny): we wouldn’t have got the full benefit of being out in the rainforest without an expert pair of eyes. Still, an interesting walk anyway and a good chance to see some of the island’s interior that clearly most tourists never see.

We are usually DIY hikers. We like getting on the trail early to have it to ourselves.
We also like to hike for more than 30 min and try to get off the beaten path away from other tourists. Therefore, we avoided tours and rented a car. Based on our experience trying to navigate roads without signs on the island but still wanting a more personal experience, we arranged to pick up a tour guide highly rated by others in Soufriere and he directed us to the trail head. Very glad that we did this. Not sure we would have found it on our own. $25/person paid to the Forest Department and then money for our guide. Very beautiful trail. It reminded me a lot of our favorite hikes on Kauai. There are steps but much easier to manage than the climb up Gros Piton. There is an upper and lower waterfall. We went early in the morning and only saw one other couple on the trail. We did cross a river. It was low enough to be able to step on rocks but be prepared to potentially get your feet/shoes wet. There are some rocks on the entry to the lower waterfall pool but sandy after a few feet. Not very deep so do not plan on swimming. It was refreshing and not too cold in July. We highly recommend Wayne as a tour guide. He also took us to Superman Falls which was beautiful. You can reach him on Facebook messenger under Wayne's Tours and Hiking Club. He taught us a lot about what we saw on the trail and what it was like growing up and living on the island. It was also nice not having to worry about being approached by other guides.

You need to be in fairly good shape to do this hike. There was a LOT of stairs. 2000 to be exact. Got to the bottom. Nice waterfall. Water was FREEZING but felt good after the hike down. I strongly suggest everyone to get wet because it is quite a trek back up. I DID IT! Really glad we didn't come across a bow constrictor!

We are definitely DIY. We researched the available information on the rainforest itself and also viewed comments on this website.
We were convinced that we could do it!
On our approach to the trail we encountered several individuals offering to be our guide. We politely turned them down. As we traveled the access road to the trail, we were approached by Kenneth.
Kenneth kept telling us that our small car would not make it up the access road. We ignored him. Ignored his polite warning that we would bottom out.
Within a very short time of bouncing on this particularly treacherous access road, it became very clear that the car would not make it.
Not only is it rocky and steep, but it can be extremely muddy with deep ruts as we soon found out. I am not convinced that even a four wheel drive would not encounter problems.
We negotiated with Kenneth to be our guide. Because of our extensive research on the trail itself and the many tours offered, the various pick up points etc., we had a fairly good idea as to what price for the guide we would accept.
We found Kenneth to be a very enterprising young man. Polite, considerate and knowledgeable. Willing to work! He was very informative about the local area as well as the different bird songs and plants.
The trail itself is steep. And, yes, all these factors can be gleamed from online comments. However, it was reassuring to have a guide that knew the trail, knew the endpoint, knew that the “shortcut” mentioned in one commentary was actually more strenuous than the marked trail.
