We visited here as part of a day trip organised through the Grenadine House Hotel and weren't sure what to expect as it's a bit off the beaten track, luckily we had a very knowledgeable driver in Grant Greaves who took the time to stop and point out many points of interest on the way there and then showed us round the gardens.

We visited in early May and had the place to ourselves, whilst it's out of season for many of the plants there were still enough in bloom to make the visit worthwhile.

Unlike the botanical gardens there are no labels to tell you the name or origin of any of the plants and you wouldn't describe it as a "show garden" it's a garden that is maintained without being manicured but we gladly spent around 1½ hours slowly making our way round seeking out plants of interest.

As others have said it's a bit of a drive from Kingstown up into the hills and the roads aren't that good but we enjoyed the gardens and the journey there and back which gave us an insight into life away from Kingstown

If you've got half a day to spare this place is well worth a visit

After an hour ride in a small bus, on roads that could be scary at moments, what a nice surprise to find Montreal Gardens at the top of the mountains….wow. The owner must be proud of the work he has done. This is impressive to see those plants in what would normally be the rain forest…just a big wow

Montreal Gardens is a matured, private garden with an entry fee. It is located on a steep mountain side - almost at the top of a mountain - in the interior of the island – about an hour’s drive from Kingstown. On this guided excursion from our cruise ship, there was a short stop at the Belmont Viewpoint overlooking the Mesopotamia Valley. The mountain road we travelled on was a narrow, twisty, hilly mountainside road with the last stretch of road to the garden on gravel due to road construction/maintenance. It was not a road I would drive on as a tourist.

Was the garden worth this long drive? I didn’t think so, but it was worth the time to get a good look at the interior of the island and the life style of its rural population. At Montreal Gardens, we spent about 30 minutes exploring the sloping downhill garden path and then returning on an uphill path to the parking area. After 15 minutes for refreshments and a WC break, we drove back on the same road to the port in Kingstown.

Montreal Garden’s website indicates there are several garden areas to walk through –Color, Tropical, and Formal, but I only saw one sign which directed me to the Color Garden. The Color Garden focused on blooming plants and colorful foliage plants. Large, white flowering begonias and mature, multi-colored Coleus plants lined this downhill path which led to a small area with colored foliage plants like the burgundy color of the Ti/Cordyline plant and a few red blooming ginger plants growing under the shade of taller plants like tree ferns. I expected more color. There seemed to be a cutting garden for Anthurium plants which were grown in rows with many red blooms on the plants. A couple of Hibiscus plants had some red blooms, too. The tall African tulip tree with its orangey red blooms, as seen from the parking area, was striking.

The short path to the Color Garden, to the right of the parking area, led down to a viewing area alongside the river/creek where the dense plantings on the mountainside were considered the Tropical Garden. The Tropical Garden was the largest garden area and this path alongside the flowing water was level and a refreshing walk, but finally it lead to an uphill path that ended at the WC building and parking area. I didn’t know if the tall trees, tree ferns, and their understory plantings along this creek would naturally be found growing there or if they had been planted.

The small Formal Garden was located beside the parking area where we were having refreshments and was unsigned. I would not have recognized it as a formal garden, though, had I not seen it on the Garden’s website labelled as such. It consisted of a clipped boxwood hedge, lawn, and a dry water feature.

Most of the paths in the Garden had perturbing foliage indicating to me that the garden needed some attention. These garden paths were sloping with some steps, some mossy areas, but mainly narrow and shady with just enough room for 1 person. Consequently, this garden was not guided with different plants being pointed out to us. Plants were not labeled either as it was a private garden, not a botanical garden. Plants were not grown in beds or visible terraces, and could be mistaken for natural dense tropical growth. Basically, the garden has a path that goes downhill and then returns uphill to the parking area.

I guess I was expecting a more manicured garden so I was disappointed in what I saw. However, the gardener worked with nature to make a garden that probably delighted him through the years as it matured.

To me, these gardens are St Vincent’s jewel in the crown. These gardens are spectacular. I would not miss visiting and cannot recommend highly enough. They're up in the rainforest hills of St Vincent, Montreal region, so you might need a 4x4 to get up there. The gardens are full of all of St Vincents plants and flowers. Hundreds of orchids hang off trees. Birds love it up there so you're surrounded by a cacophony of bird song as you walk around and you should spot at least one humming bird. There's a small river running through it and lots of sheltered areas in case it rains/ there are toilets. About 45 mins drive from KingsTown, you get to drive through lots of quiet, local villages (where you can pick up a drink and snack for the trip). We spent about an hour at the gardens but you could take your time and easily spend 2 hours roaming around. Entry is $5 in 2023 January.
*The roads were not in great condition when we visited but I am told they’re due to be resurfaced in 2023. The roads take you through lots of stunning views and small, remote, local villages so you get the real experience of St Vincent as a country.

Not open.
Information on the internet states that Montreal Gardens closes at 4:00 PM today April 21, 2022. We visited the island specifically to see the gardens. Now we are informed that they have been closed since prior to the tourist season and have not re-opened. So disappointed. Their website should be updated.

The Montreal Gardens are located in the mountains, an hours drive from Kingstown on small and bad roads. Few people come here. Still these gardens are worth the trip. We found this green, lush, peaceful and not too pruned garden to be the highlight of our St Vincent trip. There is no guide, just walk around, sit down in the shade in the small huts and enjoy colorful flowers and the company of hummingbirds.

My visit to Montreal Gardens was a truly amazing experience one not to be missed, I felt as though I had entered the garden of Eden, the scenery was so beautiful with many varieties of tropical trees and flowers, the air up in the hills was pure, clean and fresh and you could feel a drop in the temperature. I have to admit that I was so excited by the wonders and beauty of this place that I got carried away taking countless photos before running out of memory.
Cant wait for my next trip to St Vincent from the UK , this will be No1 on my list of places to visit
