Since last year, farmers from Zimbabwe have been allowing more and more cows to cross the river to illegally graze during the day. The farmers have poisoned the lions and leopards and the other animals have been chased to the unreachable middle areas because of the cowbells. On a game drive you see thousands of cows but little big game. The beautiful images of herds of elephants in the Limpopo river are unfortunately outdated. The surroundings are beautiful. The viewpoint over the three countries is great, especially late afternoon. San Parks is now receiving so many complaints that they are considering shooting the cows, as Botswana already does.

Fantastic park, whether for the landscape or the animals. Too bad the bridge at the lookout was washed away.

A cross-border national park like no other in southern Africa. With its plains of baobabs, its track on the banks of the Limpopo (very dry in October), between ocher cliffs, palms and sand, and its historical treasure, this rocky spur of the Mapungubwe civilization which you discover by registering (paying but essential) to a guided tour operated by very educated people. In particular Kgomotso Johannes Masalesa, author of a booklet to buy from him afterwards if you want. So allow at least two days, the time to do this excursion, on foot, then a car ride on the slopes, without forgetting a dip in the panoramic swimming pool of Leokwe. The only downside is the absence of shops and restaurants in the camps, everything is at a minimum, at the front door, therefore far from the camps. Interesting Mapungubwe Museum, with original artifacts and beautiful copies of the gold treasure.

Being a Safari and travel guide for the past 15 years, I only occasionally heard the name Mapungubwe. The more surprised was I when I got there.
What a Gem!!
The landscape is simply breath-taking, and the road winds thru the small park so one can explore the park with stops in 2-3hours.
However, right from entering the park one is aware, that again the parks animal density is poorly managed. Most of the millennia old Baobab are badly damaged by elephant and some, even though now strapped up with some wire fence, will not survive the mutilation.
Also other vegetation seems over utilized. Other visitors said, they even saw domestic cattle in the park?!
We stayed in the main camp Leokwe. The cottages are beautifully integrated into the surroundings, modern and offer everything ever needed on a holiday.
But a word of caution! Bring what ever you need with you, from wood over matches meat, bread, everything!. There is just no shop, or nothing what would qualify as one.
The “coffee” is not much better, even though we got eventually a coffee from a very friendly lady, employed by the park. The “museum” must also be booked in advance???
As per so often with South African Parks Board, the Will and intention was there, but……
Still worth a visit, actually a must!

Spectacular nature and wildlife that you can explore yourself in your own vehicle. Cultural experience with a guided trip to the mountain. This guided tour is NOT for the disabled. A fine museum, but we were most interested in it because of the building. An absolutely insanely beautiful viewpoint where there is room for a picnic. Set aside the whole day for a visit here.

Beautiful nature reserve with very special rock formations. Saw many elephants and giraffes. Easily accessible with your own car. We drove a 4x4 so we could take all the exciting roads. Not a big 5 park, but highly recommended in terms of special nature.

This is one of the best kept secrets of the central Kruger area as the reserve borders on the Kruger with no shared fences, self drives are awesome as traffic is very scarce and animal sightings are mostly to yourself, all of the big 5 are right here

Small park, little visited and definitely worth a visit!!
Unique rocky landscapes, sensational baobabs, animals that suddenly appear, everything is truly beautiful!
The Leokwe camp where we slept for two nights is truly welcoming and wild, there are no nets or barriers, animals everywhere.
Rarely does a camp so wild but also welcoming.
Park different from all the others we have already seen in South Africa.
An experience to live!!

Best kept secret in SA. Fantastic heritage tour up the sacred hill of Mapungubwe, 1000 year old history and atmosphere to soak in, get to see the famous golden rhino in person (unfortunately no photos allowed) Dramatic and spectacular scenery, elephants dwarfed by mighty baobabs, sandstone formations. The most spectacular view sites overlooking three countries at once. Sunset and sunrise an absolute must. Leokwe camp the best for setting and incredibly spacious and comfortable chalets. Gorgeous rock swimming pool directly overlooking a water hole. Not overrun by visitors so very peaceful. Take all food and necessities as no nearby shops. Camp shops with basically cold drink. Many 4x4 only roads but enough routes for ordinary cars. Walk up Mapunbugwe hill is very very steep, but they let you take your time!
