Kaindy Lake is one of the most enchanting, beautiful and enigmatic lake I’ve been in my whole life. There are 2 options to get there, either you go by a car and walk 2-300 meters or to ride a horse to get there. It was a fun-filled day for me and mg friend. It was one of the highlights of mg travel because of the adventure we had experienced before we’ll get to enjoy the spectacular lake.

Lake Kaindy is a popular tourist destination located at an altitude of 1667 meters above sea level in one of the gorges of the Kungei Alatau mountain range. Tourists are attracted by the unique landscape - the trunks of Tien Shan spruce trees rising above the water. The lake is located on the territory of the Kolsay Lakes National Nature Park, 130 kilometres east of Almaty.

Kaindy Lake was created in 1911, when the 8.0 magnitude Kebin Earthquake caused a landslide to dam the small river in the valley. The lake that was formed at 2,000 meters altitude drowned the valley's spruce trees, many of which still stand as eerie sentinels in the middle of the lake (the cold lake water helps preserve the tree trunks from rotting). The lake is about 400 meters long, but with depth up to 30 meters. The water in the lake is a striking blue-green color, which contrasts beautifully with the dark green conifers on the mountainsides. The area is especially spectacular in the fall when some of the hardwood trees along the shoreline begin to turn color.
Access to the lake is via a bone-jarring 30-minute ride from Saty over a boulder-strewn and pothole-plagued "road" best navigated by local drivers in 4-wheel-drive Russian-made jeeps (vans). Once reaching the lower parking area, visitors can take a second short ride, hire horses, or walk the final distance to the lake.

Lake Kaindy, located in the breathtaking Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan, offers a surreal landscape with its submerged forest and pristine turquoise waters. It’s a destination that feels straight out of a dream, but getting there requires a bit of effort and adventure.
**Getting There**
To reach Lake Kaindy, I recommend using a 4WD vehicle or booking a Buhanka (Russian van) taxi from Saty Village. These taxis are well-suited for the challenging terrain, and you can find them at two locations in the village—one near the petrol station at the entrance and another near the village’s end, toward Kolsai Lakes. The rates are not fixed, and negotiating can be tricky due to the language barrier. We paid 15,000 Tenge for a round trip (charged per vehicle, not per person). This is as of Sep.2024.
**The Journey**
The taxis start as early as 7 AM and will take you to the parking lot near the lake. The road from Saty to Lake Kaindy is in poor condition, with two small river crossings, so expect a bumpy ride. The drivers tend to speed through these rough patches, so hold on tight! The ride took around 40 minutes, with a brief stop to buy tickets (500 Tenge per person and 200 Tenge for the vehicle). Note: Keep the ticket safe, as you can use the same to enter Kolsai Lake.
**At the Parking Lot**
Once you reach the parking lot, you can either hike or take a horse ride to the lake. The horse ride prices aren’t fixed either, and we paid 4,000 Tenge per person for a one-way trip, while a round trip was offered for 6,000 Tenge. After the horse ride, there’s still a 5-10 minute walk up to the lake, so if walking isn’t your thing, I recommend opting for the roundtrip horse ride (Negotiate roundtrip fares before you start) . There’s also a taxi service available, though I didn’t check the rates.
As you walk towards the lake from where the horse ride ends, you’ll cross a small stream with steel bridge platform and you’ll notice the platform extending to the right along the stream. As of September 2024, this platform is still under construction after few meters , but from what I gathered, it’s planned to be extended all the way to the parking area.
**Conclusion**
Visiting Lake Kaindy is a truly unforgettable experience, but it requires some effort and resilience. Whether you choose to hike, ride a horse, or take a taxi, the stunning beauty of the submerged forest and crystal-clear waters will make it all worth it.

One of the most beautiful places I've visited is Lake Kaindy. There's a large parking area at the start of the final route, from where you can either hike or take a horse ride. The views along the way to the lake are breathtaking. When you finally arrive, it feels like you've stepped into another world. The lake's crystal-clear waters are surrounded by mountains adorned with alpine trees. The ice-cold water preserves submerged pine trees, creating a unique and mesmerizing sight. If you're lucky, you might even spot wild ducks swimming in the frigid waters.

Stunning lake high in the moutdins above Saty, Kaindy Lake is such a unique and peaceful place.
Only accessible by 4W drive as the drive from Saty wos rough beyond belief! There's a large car park at the base of the final trail from which you can hike up.
The views when you get there are mesmerising. The icy waters have preserved the submerged pine trees giving a surreal and haunting atmosphere to the place. Great views of same from the lakeside.
Absolutely a must see.

We were informed not to drive on our own. Instead, drive to Saty and park your rental car. There are taxis standing by to take visitors to the lake. The road is rough to say the least and there are multiple water crossings! The drivers know exactly which way to go and which ways not to go, so you're in safe hands with them. Once you get to the lakes, you can hike the entire way, ride a horse part of the way, or take another car part of the way. We opted to hike. If you can do it, it's worth it. It's not a long hike at all and there are lovely views along the way. There is a less traveled trail that set off to the right of the main viewing platform. It's quiet and beautiful!

started my drive from saty village at 630 am to beat the crowds.
lo and behold, we are the first tourists to arrive a little after 7 am and buy ticket from the park office booth (500 tenge per person, 200 tenge per car parking)
i drove here on a subaru outback awd. other vehicles seen on the same day include honda crv, mitsubishi pajero, mitsubishi delica, toyota fortuner, toyota landcruiser, and the omni-present buhanka (russian truck, uaz-452) ferrying most tourists up.
details of the driving route, as of august 2024
- 30-40 min bumpy drive from saty village
- off road gravel and dirt and small rocks, some parts with washed out sections. there are some uphills, but nothing requiring 4x4
- 2 river crossings. let the buhankas cross first and watch how they cross if you are worried. the second river crossing closer to the lake is deeper.
- high clearance is a must, but no 4x4 needed
once arrived, you will not see the lake yet. you park your car at the open lot, then can choose to
- walk 1.5-2km to lake (upper path with car, or lower path without car)
- horseback ride to lake
- ride buhanka (500 tenge per person) then walk 350m on a gravel trail down to observation deck . the observation deck is where the postcard photo of lake kaindy is taken. but there is also a vantage point from top, where you look down at lake, however the view top-down is not as impressive
happy planning. this lake is much nicer than lake kolsai #1, which is very commercialized

Unlike Kolsai Lake, the walk from the parking lot to the actual lake is not that long. You can go there by horse (12,000 KZT round-trip per person), vehicle (2,000 KZT round-trip per person), or by foot (you’ll be walking along the same road as the cars for around 1.5 KM one way).
The hardest part is getting to the actual lake as You need to be able to know how to drive across a river and the roads there are in pretty bad condition. An SUV is a must. However, you can pay locals near the start of this road for then to drive you over in their vehicles (I forgot what the price was as I rented my own vehicle).
The actual lake is very nice but be sure to also go up to the viewpoint for a better picture of the lake. This is near where the horses come down, from the lake keep on walking up and then turn right further uphill. However, do not walk back on the horse trail as you will be crossing some rivers.

Hi, We are going to visit Almaty in mid October with a year old baby. Will it be safe to take our baby to kaindy lake?
Escrita el 10 de septiembre de 2024
If you are planning to take your kid on a stroller, not recommended..If you are athletic in physique & can manage 30-40 mins of hiking or a horse ride with your baby go for it..But keep in mind that there is very bumpy ride from Saty to the lake which may not be comfortable for the baby..

Hi, I'm planing to visit Almaty and then, Kaindy Lake (and if it's possible, the Canyon... because I know that is on the way). Do you think it's possible to go and back from Almaty to Kaindy in the same day?
I was thinking to rent a car but it's a bit expensive, specially because we will need a 4x4 for the road conditions. Do you recommend any tour agency?
Thanks in advance!

I guess it'd be possible but it's a long ride and I wouldn't recommend it. You have to pass the river to get to Kaindy lake so if you're not used to off ride terrains I wouldn't rent a car. We got there with Friendly tours and they were excellent.
