My husband (teacher) and myself (nurse) did the Achilles tour. Both of us go to the gym regularly but we feel that the description/warning for this tour was seriously lacking and had we known of the risks, clearly we never would have chosen it. As a 6 foot tall woman and 6 foot 4 inch man, we both got stuck during the belly crawls in the most claustrophobic tunnels you can imagine. I wear women’s xl tops and my husband wears men’s large tops and everyone else on the tour was size medium or less and didn’t get stuck. I almost started to cry when I realized that I would have to re-enter in order to get out. As a nurse I was mortified (in case of injury) that anyone was legally allowed to pass through these areas after which they would not be able to be rescued if inured, as not even a backboard could have been slid through these spaces.
The tour guide was a fantastic, kind, informed student studying these caves and apologized for what was clearly a horrible experience for us, but I am mortified that they don’t have a clearer demo outside of the caves for what “the belly crawls” will be like or safety protocols in place in a rescue is needed. We are both not claustrophobic, but getting stuck 4 times during 2 belly crawls was more than we could handle and overshadowed what would have otherwise been an enjoyable experience.
The space was intriguing and beautiful but due to this experience and a lack of any staff advising us not to do this tour (after looking at us in person) we as a family will never ever be going caving again. If you want to try this experience, I advise you to do the safest tour with the widest spaces and zero pinch points. I took five months to write this review because I literally did not want to think about it ever again - inform yourself of exactly what you are climbing into. The descriptions on the website are vague and the diagrams outside the gift shop show the tightest points being someone on their hands and knees with a few feet clearance above - not a 6 foot or longer stretch laying flat and slugging along with your head sideways to fit and your back scraping against the rocks above you.

We had a fantastic time in the Action Pack tour. Curtis was an amazing guide - so knowledgeable and fun hey we felt totally safe. The tour posed a great challenge to our whole group (2 adults and kids age 16&12) We all really felt we had achieved something by the end of it. It was really worth hiring the suits and boots or we would have got very cold and wet. We would highly recommend the tour and would love to come back to do another. Thank you Curtis!

Incredible experience. Note that the road to get there was full of potholes, so be prepared. Dress to get wet. You can rent rubber boots there if need be and they will also provide a protective suit and helmet.

We all loved the "Adventure Tour" we took with Curtis. All of us did the optional adventurous extras inside the caves and were very very happy with the experience. Curtis was an absolute riot and very knowledgeable and he made the trip so much better. If you don't might getting dirty and wet and love climbing stuff you will enjoy this trip. Plan a little extra time to navigate the potholes in the dirt road around the lake.

Absolutely incredible experience at The Horne Lake Caves. From the minute we arrived Laura was an awesome host and got us set up with some nice conversation and good laughs. Kale took over from there and was totally awesome. He was fun, informative and downright awesome. Our group had a fantastic time. Can’t wait to come back. Thanks again Kale and Laura.

I was apprehensive at first booking this tour. Was not sure what to expect but hands down an amazing experience. I went alone but my group was a lot of fun. Would say they were close to my age ranging 40-60. None had done this before but you can see they were all up for adventures. I had gone caving once before but it was a larger self guided cave with plenty of standing areas and was dry. Our tour guide Kale is what elevated the experience to a 10/10. He was funny, easy going and so knowledgeable. I will admit the first cave entrance is daunting. It was far more narrow than I imagined and we had to 'squeeze' to get through it. Once through I felt panicky for a minute but Kale calmly talked us through it, reminding us that so much of caving is mentally challenging instead of physically.
That being said, I would not recommend this if you have a lot of physical challanges. You will be required to crouch, almost crawl, climb rocks and at times squeeze through tighter spots. Some ladder climbing and also go down a short slide but you need to lie on your back or you will hit your face on sharp rocks. It is quite wet in the caves. The area surrounding the caves is also breathtaking. It is a bit of a drive out and you will encounter some gravel/dirt roads but found them in good shape.
This is a tour you should consider. I did rent the boots, gloves and protective suit. I was the only one beside the guid with the suite on but found it was worth it. I was not concerned about ripping my clothes or getting wet. If you bring things from home, I would dress for the cooler temps inside. Wear clothes that are waterproof, as well water proof shoes/boots and some gloves (like garden gloves). I found the rental prices were fair. If you rent the suit, it gives you the peace of mind maneuver as you like and not worry about ruining your clothes.
Thanks Kale for this experience, for the new knowledge and the euphoric feeling of an experience that pushed my mental limitations. I will remember this as a highlight of my trip and can now pat myself on the back for overcoming a fear.

How is this place look like at this time ? 09/2022 ?
Escrita el 11 de septiembre de 2022
My husband and I are pretty good with hikes although long distances and steep inclines would wear me down quickly. But we are not.. ahem...skinny. We are definitely the other side of skinny. Should we even bother, or is it likely that we quite frankly could not squeeze through?
Escrita el 19 de junio de 2020
We just did the multi-cave tour, and there were some optional places to climb or squeeze through. Our guide claimed some very large people had made it on these sections, and it’s far more about how adventurous you are and willing to squish yourself than anything else. As long as you’re in reasonable shape, the trail up to the caves is definitely a moderate (though not long) climb and you need to be strong enough to get around rocks with an overhang, doing a bit of a crab walk in a few places. It’s never for long, and there’s lots of spots to rest and look at formations. Try the 1 hour tour, see if you like it!

We're both in our 60s and not particularly fit, travelling with my 7 year old granddaughter. Is the first leg of the cave tour suitable for our little group?
Escrita el 29 de junio de 2019
My husband an I did the three hour visit. It involves a vigorous uphill hike to get to the caves and then about 2 1/2 hours inside. There were no children on our tour. There were many places that I had to squat/crab walk on uneven ground, wary of hitting my head. (Thank goodness for the helmet that was provided.) There are a lot of loose rocks underfoot for much of the experience. Even though I exercise daily, I found my legs to be a bit wobbly at the end of the excursion. The three hour hike involves some climbing (maybe 10 feet?? high with good hand holds in a short waterfall). Also, there are no toilet facilities available on the tour if that is an issue. Overall, I found the tour to be very enjoyable, educational, and a highlight of our trip. But it was fairly vigorous.

Are they any tours or activities that would include a three year old?
Escrita el 12 de octubre de 2018
Unfortunately there is nothing organized for really young children. There are trails you can walk for free. Not sure if that would hold their interest, it would depend on the 3 year old.

I'm considering the 4 hour tour as there is a Groupon available. My concern is I'm claustrophobic. How tight are the spaces (site says the height of a picnic table) and for how long of a distance? I can handle short durations but if it goes on for too long, I'm out.
Escrita el 1 de agosto de 2017
It's very tight in places. But they told me the two hour tour was more open although I did the one hour which I assumed would be easy and it was NOT! Crouching, squeezing, climbing....barely enough room to get through in spots. I loved it but you need to be fit, agile and definitely ok with tight spaces. Ask them about the two hour tour though, they are very approachable and will give you an honest review.

How good/bad is the gravel road ? can a normal car go there ?
Escrita el 19 de mayo de 2016
Yes the road is a publicly-maintained gravel road. No problem for cars just take it easy on the speed. As summer is peak time around the lake, watch out for oncoming traffic - everything from ATV's to logging trucks share this road. Drive slow with headlights on and be ready to pull over and stop if necessary.

Is there an upper age limit for the 3 hour tour?
Escrita el 29 de agosto de 2015
They don't mention anything about an upper age limit, but you need to be somewhat fit and sure footed. We were on the 90 minute Family tour and there was a woman there with her 80 year old mother...she managed the hike up to the cave entrance but when she got inside she had second thoughts about the decent into the cave. I believe the 3 hour tour is much more physically challenging.

Hi,
How do you get to the caves from downtown vancouver? How long does the ferry ride take? Thanks!
Escrita el 17 de marzo de 2015
From Downtown Vancouver, you would take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (Nanaimo). The ferry ride is 1 hr, 35 min (sailing time), then by car it would be about 45 minutes north of Nanaimo. As previously stated in the other reply, I would think you would need to have a car, as the caves are actually about 15/20 minutes off the hiway near a little town called Bowser. Take the clothing recommendations on the tour seriously as well unless you want to get wet. It is really cool. One of those things that I cant believe I have lived on the island most of my life, but waited a long time to see.
