Photos don't do justice to these grasslands. Beautiful rolling hills dotted with sharp intrusive mountains. The flowers and animal life are wonderful. So many interesting areas to view and absorb. Much to see.

We got a deal at this place for my wife and son to get a horse ride, but only after haggling. My daughter wanted to go on a very dilapidated children’s ride, but they wanted 100RMB for both my kids to ride it. After the horse ride, we walked down the hill towards the cows and the animals surprisingly let us take pics with them. The horses ran off of course. There were yurts there serving as restaurants but the food didn’t look fresh so we left. There might be better places around so search thoroughly before deciding to spend all day here.

I went there on June 10, 2019 as solo backpacker, took an overnight train (23:40h) from Beijing to Jining Nan (Jining South) Railway Station, arrive there at 07:42 h on June 11.
Had breakfast at the restaurant in front of the train station, and if you need Halal food (清镇食物), there’s a lot of Lanzhou restaurants around Jining Nan Railway Station that can be reached by foot.
To get a bus to Zhongqi Village (中旗) to go Huitengxile Grassland, i walked to the Bus station, on the left side of Jining Nan Railway Station about 300m. Bought the ticket at 17元 and the mini bus departed at 09:05am. About 2 hrs journey you’ll arrive this small town. This small town also have Lanzhou Lamian restaurant (Halal food). I saw only one restaurant, it’s more than enough for you to pack your lunches to grassland.
And then i took a cab, 100元/cab for return price. They’ll send you, and don’t forget to take their phone number before you left for grassland. I didn’t enter the specific entrance, yet i just sightseeing outside the entrance for free, because they are all grassland. Horses are everywhere.
If you want to experience sleeping in the yurts, you can just go and ask someone they or they’ll come to you right after they see you. 100元/night, complete with breakfast/lunch/dinner. If you wanna taste local food also you can ask them without having to stay overnight in the yurt.
And from this small town you can directly go to Hohhot (HuHeHaote 呼和浩特) with 42元 by bus, about 3hrs journey.
The place is really nice, the locals helped me a lot and they were so concerned that i went alone!😂 they’re just so wow. All you need to do is tell the locals what’s your plan for that day and they’ll have help you find the way! I’m not lying, they’re so generous🥰♥️
Photos:
1 - locals wrote me their number if i need their assistance to go back to Jining from Grassland.
2 - the yurt: if you wanna book accommodation
Last photo- bus from Zhongqi to Hohhot
Hope this helps!

I went there on a school trip and I was impressed with how remote and peaceful it was - very windy, true, but we got quite snug with my classmates spending the night in a yurt. :) We saw Mongolian wrestling, horse riding (we were invited to try it ourselves of course) and were even offered traditional milk vodka and tea with some mare milk. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for sure. :)

While waiting for the rain to stop, we have our early lunch. One wagon is allowed to fit in six to eight persons but there are eight of us. We have to squeeze ourselves in by adding more chairs. While riding on the bumpy grassland, nothing much to see except wind turbines are everywhere. The grassland is short and green. It was deadly cold and windy. Finally we reach the mongolian village. They serve us hot milk tea and some snacks. Free range chickens are running over the grassland. No proper toilet.

My passion to to travel to 'no mans land" is old and this is why I decided to go to Inner Mongolia grasslands.
My mistake, didnt know it was already raided by windmills ;-(
The beautiful landscape was no more beautiful and the Yurts are more commercialized than you can imagine.
I wish it was something to remember for good reasons but I felt like wasted my hard earned cash.

I stayed in Huitengxile Grassland in July 2013 thanks to a school trip. The grassland scenery is beautiful, but it is difficult to take a picture without catching a windmill, they are everywhere!
We watched Mongolian people riding horses for an acrobatic show and then dined in the restaurant, where we ate typical dishes (lamb too).
At night we slept in a tent for five people. It was clean, but really cold! The wind was cold and strong, the tent did not have heating and they only gave us a blanket, but it was not enough for the temperature reached. So, my advice is to bring some anorak and sweater with you, just for stay up for the after dinner party and sleep.
There are 40 horses (more or less) used to take people for a horse ride in the grassland area. My friends paid 200 RMB for the ride, plus some tip to the horse "owner". You are not usually allowed to ride alone, but sometimes Mongolian people let you do it.
Toilets are not so beautiful to see: squat toilets and just a hung sheet used as door. I think they get cleaned every morning, but not so well.
I think this place is ok for a short short stay.

This is what I gathered:
1) Gegentala Grassland- located deep in the Ulanqab Prairie, 140 kilometers away from Hohhot (2 hrs). Takes priority among the three grasslands as it is more like a prairie both in size and in its meadows. Many performances, such as horse racing, wrestling, archery, horse-riding performances and bonfire party. Good road condition
2) Xilamuren - nearest grassland to Hohhot but closed from 16/9, One and half hour from Hohhot
3) Huitengxile Grassland- Three and half hour drive from Hohhot. With yellow flowers & some complained too many wind turbines.
Is it fair to say that Gegentala is the best choice among the 3 above as it is not too far to travel and it doesn't have too many power turbines. Xilamuren may be nearer, but some say too touristy and close from 16/9.
Any feedback from anyone who may not agree?
