Decided to take a trip to Haldon Forest over the weekend and was not disappointed! Decided to do the Butterfly Trail and thoroughly enjoyed it. Around the halfway mark had a lovely sit down and chat watching the cyclists pass by! Once we were deep into the Butterfly walk we hardly bumped into anyone really it was so peaceful and nice. Love the idea of hiring a bike so will be back for that at some point.
Only thing that let it down was the cost of parking, I found it to be extremely expensive however I understand that the forest wont pay for itself.

Hello Gabbie, thanks for taking the time to leave us your review.
I can understand your views on our parking prices. We rely on your parking money to help look after the forest and the facilities that our visitors enjoy. From resurfacing mountain trails, to installing new play equipment and changing the toilet roll, every little helps - and we couldn’t do it without your support.
Why do we charge for parking?
To ensure we are less reliant on support from the government we need to have diverse sources of income to sustain the work we do. Part of this is we need to charge for parking, income from parking charges, are our primary way of funding the improvements of our sites. They also help fund the work we do in looking after the forest for all and for generations to come. If you are a regular visitor you could save money with a membership pass price at just £42 per year (as little as 81p a week), by becoming a member you are supporting the work we do helping our forests and wildlife thrive for generations to come to enjoy.
We hope that you do try us again soon.
Kind Regards,
Chris. Haldon Rangers.

Brilliant place to bring the bikes or just yourself and the dog, add in the kids if required.
Pay for the car park on arrival money goes towards the maintenance of the forest.
Trails varying levels, the kids ones are gravelled, with the advanced ones being more carved into the ground then fully fledged paths.
Places to wash bikes
Bottle refill stations
Cafe - bank loan required
Loads of benches to sit at and have a picnic

Well set out car park with plenty of parking (payable). There are several walking routes to choose from throughout the site which are well maintained and easy to walk on. Not too much in the way of hills, but where there are they are not overly steep.
Not for us, but there are numerous cycling routes throughout the forestry or sharing the footways.
had food in the cafeteria which was nice. We spent around 3/4 hours there and would recommend

My family was visiting for a few days so we decided to have a look at where we could take my 3 yr old niece and we happened to find Haldon Forrest with a Zog trail which my niece loves. So we downloaded the app on our phone and off we went. When we got there it started raining so we decided to have a coffee at the ridge cafe while we waited for it to stop raining. The coffee was delicious and the staff were lovely would highly recommend while your there. Luckily the sun came out and we set off. It was so well set out my niece got so excited every time she saw a picture of Zog and the gold stars she got for finding him the activities were great it's a lovely thing for kids to do it gets them out on the beautiful surroundings and keeps there mind active and there body's active. I would highly recommend it to anyone with younger qkids. The Forrest is beautiful and is great for walking and cycling.

Lovely place and lovely facilities. Great little playground but not ideal for a short stop on a long journey. We were on a big drive on the A38 and wanted to use it as a pit stop but the minimum parking fee is £4 despite the cafe etc being shut on a Sunday evening. This cost is possibly fine if you want to stop for two hours but unaffordable for a quick stop. If we lived closer we could go for an annual pass but just not worth it for a couple of visits. I think the parking cost seriously needs some thought and 1 hour option needs to be considered, maybe for £2. However, I think forestry England have got this pricing structure wrong and the high cost of parking will be putting off so many visitors who could otherwise enjoy this place. Please have a rethink guys.

Shouldn’t have had the big breakfast but couldn’t resist after our walk, glad I didn’t try too hard. Simple food but very filling and well cooked with quality ingredients. Decent menu. Exceptional staff especially one young lady and this helped with my very keen doodle.
Parking pricy, get annual pass if regular visitor for the lots of walking and cycling routes. Gets very busy at weekends and bank holidays.

Wet windy and soggy bottoms covered in mud and that was just the adults. Family walk which turned it to a mud bath. Boy did we have a fantastic day though! It was brilliant and the laughs till tears ran down our cheeks. To end our amazing walk with a super hot chocolate and cake. Highly recommend with the children and adults alike. Hire a bike tie your own or just yourselves and a dog you’ll have a lovely amble through the woods with some great views across Exeter.

Despite getting very wet, my 9 year old son , somewhat older husband and I had a fabulous fun time out exploring the Forrest. Husband and son on their bikes and me on the “Tramper” called Wilma. Wilma is a disability off road disability scooter and she is fab! £10 for years membership other options available - book in advance. They have more than one available:-) so helpful if you are a couple with reduced mobility. We kept to the green route as this was our first outing and I also was not sure of Wilma capabilities. Maps are included with hire of scooter so you can explore other routes safely as well. Loved having the freedom to explore the outside with my family , not often possible when you are reliant on a mobility scooter.
My son and husband also enjoyed the “ Go-Ape” on site high rope course. Very well run, excellent staff who were really good with my son who has ASD. They also run orienteering events from this site . Located next to children’s play area. Adjacent to main car park on the opposite side of the cafe.
Car parking was £8 for the day.
Cafe is quite small inside but has covered and non covered seating outside. The menus choice very good both for adults and children. Portion sizes generous. Hot chocolate really smooth and creamy, great when cold and wet ! Service was quick and staff very friendly.
Can’t wait to go back when the sun is shining and have a picnic.
Highly recommend for inclusive family fun :-)

We did the Zog: A Forest Adventure trail. The paper packs weren’t available so we used the app which was fantastic. The kids (4 and 6) had such fun finding the pictures on the trail and then doing the activity on the app. I was worried it was more screen time but they were thoroughly engaged with no whinging about the walk! The adults enjoyed the app activities too!
We then took their bikes and did the trail again. The paths are wide and smooth enough for balance bikes and beginner cyclists. The playgrounds are excellent. Plenty of picnic benches scattered around. It was a busy sunny Sunday but all the users were courteous and patient.
The parking is easy and although you have to pay it’s a bargain for a days entertainment. We can’t wait to go back.

Are the Gruffalo’s sculptures still there? Is the Zog trail still there? If not, is there something else similar for young children? Thanks
Haldon Rangers
Exeter, UK
Hi Cal, the Gruffalo is self isolating deep in the forest, so he is not there anymore.
Stickman is still there ready to greet the young ones...and older ones too. Thanks, Haldon Rangers.

Do you just turn up to bbq area or do u have to book are they limited spaces ?
Hiya,
At Haldon there is only one fire pit and its use is on a first come first use basis so any days you wished to use the pit its recommended you arrive early.
Unfortunately due to the dry spring and summer Forestry England are on an Amber Fire Warning. Meaning no fires or bbqs are allowed on the public forest estate.
If you wish a more up to date response i'd recommend contacting us through our Facebook page and we will get back to you.
Thanks
The Haldon Rangers
My son has a small electric dirt bike and I was wondering if he is allowed to take it seems as it is simmilar to a electric bike
Haldon Rangers
Exeter, UK
Hello, thanks for getting in touch.
Unfortunately we do not allow any motorised dirt bikes (electric or petrol) in the forest, due to liability and insurance purposes. They are classed differently to electric power assisted bikes.
Many thanks,
Haldon Rangers.

Hi there am thinking of visiting with my husband and 8 month old is the park an easy walk or is it more for bikers and also do you have baby changing facilities.
Hello,
There is indeed baby changing facilities at the main hub. The forest park is a multi activity centre but 3/4 of the walking trails are suitable for push chairs.
Is it possible to have bbqs at haldon?
Haldon Rangers
Exeter, UK
Hello,
Yes there is a fire pit near the Goape building which you are welcome to use.
Please do not place BBQs directly onto the wooden benches or grassed areas and place all your (cooled) rubbish in the bins provided.
Many thanks and hope you enjoy your visit.

Will the gruffalo trail be coming back? We are gutted we missed it
Haldon Rangers
Exeter, UK
Hello,
No the Gruffalo trail is not coming back, the trail changes each year to a new Character - 2019 is the year of Zog also by Julia Donaldson.
The wooden Gruffalo sculpture is still here though and can be found near GoApe in the Bullers Hill playground.
Sorry you missed it! But Zog is very fun too!
Many thanks

There are a few items of play equipment dotted around the gruffalo trail, all timber construction, but no specific play area.
I would like to come there with my older son. Can we bring younger son who is 5?

Yes all ages would find something to do there and if he has a bike he'll love cycling around plenty of space to go round. After all the cycling and running around he'll be ready for bed later on.
