La stazione ferroviaria di Charing Cross è un capolinea ferroviario del centro di Londra . E' la stazione della metropolitana ( Bakerloo e Northern Lines) per arrivare a Trafalgar Square e visitare la National Gallery.

Visiting friends, who were guests in the hotel, my wife and I were looked after in the bar, a beautiful room looking out towards Charing Cross Road and Trafalgar Square, by Florina and a great team.

What a grand station. I often land in here when visiting London. Just the right amount of shops for a station. Perfect base to see London from. Trafalgar Square and national gallery are a few minutes walk away, as are Charing cross and embankment tube stations.

Beautiful building too.

Charing Cross Station is a grand affair. Built during the Victorian times there is a forecourt where horse and carriages could drop off their passengers but nowadays it's taxis.

There is a hotel above the station as well. It's a short distance to Trafalgar Square and the River Thames and you are very close to the West End for entertainment and eating.

If you are using the station there is an interchange with the Tube with Northern Line and Bakerloo Line trains stopping here.

The station is served by South Eastern Trains going to South East London and Kent and there are only 6 platforms so it's not huge. On the station concourse there are places to get snacks and drinks.

Well, the official centre of London it may be, but Charing Cross is as London as the rest of the city. There are some quite lovely buildings about, and there are some modern monstrosities as well, however, overall it is a rather nice area to visit. There are plenty of cafes, restaurant and boutiques to spend your time in. You can see Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, plus a host of other wonderful attractions within minutes of each other. If this is in your route, go ahead and make your day!

Charing Cross is a historical site going back many hundreds of years - for this reason they should have added more information here about the actual ‘cross’ and the monument that stands directly outside of the station as tourists like to know about the history here and this is surely a missed opportunity

I was walking around Charing Cross & The strand on my most recent visit to London and must confess that I tend to this of Charing Cross as Charing Cross Station & an area between The Strand & Trafalgar Square.
However, after a little research I realise that whilst not the most appealing of areas in central London it is in fact the official centre of London. Well, as they say you learn something new each day.
The station forecourt is also home to The Eleanor Crosses.

Charing Cross is the official centre of London with other places being measured in terms of their distance from this place. It is a junction of several high profile roads and borders Trafalgar Square. The most iconic buildings are Charing Cross Station and the Eleanor Cross.

Nowadays there is little remarkable about Charing Cross especially when compared to Trafalgar Square just next door. If it was not for the historic central point there would be little now for a passer-by to note.

Unfortunately there is pretty much none of the history still in place here nor any reference to some of the many notable events which took place in this area. The replica of the Eleanor Cross and the statue of Charles I are just about it. The Cross itself is referenced in the underpass from Trafalgar Square to Charing Cross station.

The Eleanor Cross is not a true replica as it is a much more elaborate version than the original. This current version is a lottle over 150 years old. It has regrettably been overlooked and is really hard to get a good look at because of its location. It is in the middle of a taxi rank at the front of the station so not a place to linger due to the traffic.

The Cross is nice though and while the ornate carvings are unlike the original they are still interesting to look at. It is in a good condition thanks to restoration a decade ago.

The major building of the area is Charing Cross station. It is an attractive structure originally put together at the same time as the new Eleanor Cross but having gone through major rebuilds in the time since. From The Strand the building is appealing and has a sense of history about it. The underpasses to the Underground are generally unpleasant and worth avoiding.

There is much history in this place but it is now somewhat overlooked. The station still looks good but the inaccessibility of the Eleanor Cross is disappointing. This area is pretty much just a place to pass through now.

The Eleanor Crosses were a series of twelve lavishly decorated stone monuments topped with tall crosses commissioned by King Edward 1 between 1294 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile and marking the nightly resting-places along the route taken when her body was transported to London after her unexpected sudden death. Only three survive intact, although remnants of others can be seen at various sites. The current monument is located on the forecourt of Charing Cross Station on the Strand and was erected in 1865, a few hundred metres to the east of the original site of the Eleanor Cross. It's not a faithful copy, being more ornate than the original but it is very well worth seeing.
