Barrio: Spitalfields

Worth getting inside to see just how grand this building is! It is currently open on Sunday afternoons - but check the website to avoid disappointment. It is pretty amazing - bright and spacious. As well as a modern Anglican congregation using it as a church building, it is also used for events and filming - and you can see why!
Hard to believe that this Grade I listed building had to be saved from demolition, but it costs a fortune to maintain (as all similar buildings do).
Built in 1729 as one of the 50 (that turned out to be 12) parish churches commanded by Queen Anne, it is very impressive.

This Anglican church was built on Commercial Street in the East End, between 1714 and 1729, according to the plans (English Baroque style; in Portland stone) by the English architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (≈1661-1736), in under the Act of Parliament of 1711 which ordered the construction of fifty new churches (known as "Commissioners' Churches") to serve the new populations on the outskirts of London. Some Huguenots used it for baptisms, weddings and burials, but not for daily worship, preferring their own chapels, which were much simpler compared to the grandiloquent style of Christ Church. The rectangular nave is topped at its west end by a large three-story tower, itself topped by a Gothic bell tower (61.5 m high). The flat ceiling is richly decorated and lit by a clerestory and a Venetian window on the east side (influence of Palladian architecture). The aisles are covered with elliptical barrel vaults, supported by numerous columns. A magnificent semi-circular pedimented porch rests on Tuscan columns. One of the wonders of Christ Church Spitalfields is its organ, which was inaugurated in 1735 (it was then the largest organ in England) and restored in 2014 in the spirit of heritage conservation. Organ concerts are organized throughout the year to highlight it. One of the best views of Christ Church is from Brushfield Street, south of Old Spitalfields Market.

Very imposing dominating structure that looms over its surroundings. White colour makes it stand out further. The iron railings that surround it have gates incorporated into them that are very heavy and the hinge mechanism is cleverly incorporated into the rail. Cannot comment on the inside. Couldn’t get in but it’s worth just standing outside to appreciate the architecture.

Christ Church is certainly a White church as you can see from the photos. It’s really massive and dominates the landscape.

This Church was built in the early 1700’s. A commission, backed by Queen Anne, decided to get this and 49 other churches built outside London to crush the invasion of the non conformists in these parts. Only 12 churches were completed. The tall spires were added by Hawksmoor to impose authority. It has some elegant stonework. It has undergone two renovations first in 1866 and the second in 1960. It still has a huge congregation. It was been estimated that roughly 100,000 people have visited this church during the last twenty years, may they be worshippers tourists, music lovers or exhibition guests as many local events are held here too.

This fine old church is one of the six churches deigned by Nicholas Hawksmoor.
It was restored a while ago and now as well as being a place of worship is also used as an opera house and concert hall, plus has a café in the crypt area.
It is a very impressive building from afar when you come off Bishopsgate and walk down Brushfield Street and when you get nearer you realise just how big this church is.
I have been there a couple of times and this time was upset to find that I couldn’t take in my new cousin from the USA (courtesy of Ancestry DNA) whose Great Grandfather X4 on her father’s side of the family was christened there in 1783 and he and his wife were also buried in the churchyard in 1834. My X3 Great Grandmother and Great Aunt X3 were both buried there in 1814 so I also have my family history links there.
Thankfully one of the vergers there in the door area took pity of us and let my cousin in so she could have a look round and take her photos. She was really impressed by the font, organ, stained glass, and the general feel of this fine old church.
She said that this was the highlight of her first trip to the UK seeing somewhere that her ancestors would have been.
We would have had a snack in the café there but already had lunch plans that day in the nearby Spitalfields Market.
It is a place well worth visiting if you are in the area.

Right across the Old Spitalfields Market. Stop by at the Georgian style church 'Christ Church', located right beside. The church has a clean and cool atmosphere. Georgian style. FREE

Right on the side there is the possible Jack Ripper's pickup spot 'Ten bells' pub.

Still, if you like Georgian style keep going on Fournier Street where you will find the last selection of original 'Georgian style houses in London.

As a preparation of visiting London for the second time, we looked into 'London Touristic guides' this kind of book has suggestions of walk tours that you can do it on your own. So we made copies of the maps only and we were surprised to find that all the walking tours led us to nom touristic areas, but very interesting to see and to know.

An amazing find in central London. A cool retreat away from the noise and heat of the streets. Here is a beautiful, clean and newly renovated cafe in the crypt of the church. Beautifully presented cakes and snacks, tea, coffee etc. The server was very helpful and polite even bringing water for our dog, oh yes it’s dog friendly 👍. Even the toilets were immaculate. If you want a reasonable, clean and quiet space this is it.

Visited the cafe in the crypt for lunch. There wasn't much choice, but settled on a bacon and egg sandwich and a can of lemonade. This came to £9.70. The staff member came over 5 minutes later having forgotten what I ordered (the cafe was half empty). My sandwich arrived, the bacon was overdone and dry and the egg was hard, needed about 5 minutes less, no runny yolk, no ketchup. I could have had a whole meal for that price.
