Wonderful to see this unique tapestry with outstanding design and stitching.
The cafe is excellent serving real home made soup, scones and cakes. Lovely hot cappuccino and fabulous chees scone. Lovely staff too.

Admission to see the Great Tapestry is not cheap. There is a lot to see and read here, and your ticket allows you to return any time the same day. I recommend viewing in two 'chunks', with a break for some shopping or some food at the excellent cafe on the ground floor.
Staff were very polite and welcoming, and the quality of some of the panels is fantastic. Very different!

This is an exceptional visit that we enjoyed. You really need to set aside a couple of hours or so to take in all the wonderful embroidery panels, and read each one’s shirt piece of Scottish history behind the theme in each panel. Easily digestible and informative. And with a cafe on site you can break your tour around the panels for a break and take your time. Definitely well worth it.

Fantastic adult day out, leave plenty time to read the details and enjoy the tapestries.
Coffee shop was good value and delicious too.
Was unsure what to expect but it was brilliant. So informative, understated and well worth the admission.
Spent 4 hours there including a short coffee break and would still be worthwhile returning...

Less than an hour's train ride from Edinburgh is Galashiels, a border town that used to be known for its textile industry. And in this delightful little town is the purpose-built building that houses the Great Tapestry of Scotland. It opened in 2021, right in the middle of COVID, so it probably hasn't got the attention it deserves.
Actually it's not a tapestry in the traditional sense; it's embroidered. There are more than 160 one metre square panels that depict the history of Scotland. More than 1000 stitchers were involved in taking the artist's and historian's interpretation of Scottish history and stitching all aspects of Scottish life, culture, regions, battles, famous and not so famous people, covering from 420 million years ago to 1999, when Scotland got its own Parliament.
The level of detail in the stitching is amazing, and each group or individual who worked on a panel had a small space allocated to identify themselves. There's also a series of threads going up the staircase that contains the names of every stitcher who contributed.
Well worth a visit!!!

Wonderful day out.
The tapestry, itself, is outstanding and the exhibition space has been very thoughtfully curated.
I am a wheelchair user and the entire building was accessible. The information panels are set at an accessible height and the whole experience was excellent.
Cafe was bright and spotlessly clean, with a varied menu. We had soup, quiche, a scone and a traybake…everything was very tasty.
We shall definitely be back.

What a wonderful piece of work on every level. Allow yourself at least two hours as it’s totally absorbing. Certainly provokes conversation on some of the interpretations of the history but that’s exactly what it should do as none of us were there!
Would have been five stars but for the faulty lighting. Hopefully it will be fixed soon as it detracts from the overall viewing experience.
Do take time to enjoy the cafe too, super value and lovely cheery team.

I can not praise the tapestry enough. We had planned a brief visit; we stayed for two and a half hours. The history of Scotland is beautifully depicted (and I'm English), events that I knew nothing of brought to life. The artistry, the stitching, the magic is wondrous. I wish we could have stayed longer.

A special visit. The concept is wonderful and the bringing together of so many pieces completed throughout Scotland to produce the whole work is awesome. The finished work gives a colourful and multi-skilled depiction of so much of Scotland's history, people and contributions to our world's development - a remarkable achievement. We were lucky enough to see the Bayeux tapestry many years ago and, although different in so many ways, of course, this tapestry left an equally memorable impression. Very well worth a visit.
Additionally we gave ourselves a break during our visit and had coffee and scones in the museum's cafe -appropriately named Stitchers- and that was lovely. Very friendly staff and fab cheese scones!

We had heard about the Tapestry and were delighted it had found a permanent home in Galashiels. I was surprised my friend said she had taken three trips to do it justice but, when I got there, I was not surprised. The quality of the embroidered panels was exquisite. Each panel depicts a certain bit of Scottish history/life and there is a short explanatory note at the bottom to explain the panel. There is also a list of the members of the group who undertook the embroidery. Apart from this being a fantastic and very different telling of Scottish history, there are short videos from, for example, the designer of all the panels, the lady who organised the embroidery groups and many others.
We needed two trips to go through and read only the panels. I cannot recommend this exhibition more highly.
