Outstanding long distance walk through varied and beautiful landscapes. Great for less experienced walkers as much of it is flat and there is no really challenging terrain and no scrambling - we found the long stretches of road actually harder on the body and got predictably very wet on a few days, but that’s all part of the adventure! There are some stretches with many wooden steps.
We did this in 6 days which was challenging enough for us two in our 40s with average fitness. I know many do it in less days.
We drove to Berwick and left our car there, then immediately took a bus to Melrose and did a short first day (to st Boswells). At the end of the walk, we organised a taxi (£40) to take us from Lindisfarne back to Berwick. It was really worth saving the beach walk to Holy Island for the last day so we could really enjoy it without being rushed or exhausted - it was magical. Limited budget accommodation but we were lucky to be able to afford B and Bs and there are a couple of hostels. We carried all our own stuff but there looks to be well organised companies to do luggage transfers. Good places to eat in the bigger towns like Jedburgh. Morebattle community shop was a godsend and well stocked. It is a well marked trail but we found OS app invaluable.

My sister and I have just returned from 4 days walking the 62 mile St Cuthbert's Way. The variety of unspoilt scenery through woodland and pastures, alongside rivers and across hills with blooming heather, the peace and solitude and the good August weather made for a great trip. The route is well waymarked and we had OS maps and a guidebook for backup. One of the highlights was walking the pilgrim's route across the sands to Holy Island rather than on the very busy causeway road (information is available online on how to do this safely) then spending a night on the island which takes on a whole different feel when the day visitors have left. We would highly recommend all of it.

Excellent. Overall very well signposted and interesting aspects. This is an excellent walk and not too hard. Good variety of scenery and interest. Would recommend this walk both to inexperienced and experienced walkers.

Over the years we have walked a lot of Britain's long distance foot paths and have used a nuber of firms to organise our treks, but this was the first time with Shepherds Walks - They were OUTSTANDING, the best we have used.
They were helpful and accommodating when we were planning the trip, the information and advice they provided was spot on, the organisation excellent and the standard of accommodation we were booked into along the route was consistently top notch, a step up from what seems to be the norm.
The walk itself is one of the most clearly way marked we have come across , so you don't need to be particularly good at navigation - at least in good weather (which we were lucky enough to get). One of the nice things about the route is the wide variety of scenery; small towns, lowland river valleys, the wilder, hilly sections and then the coast.
All in all, an excellent trip and a big thank you to Shepherds Walks

St Cuthbert’s Way takes you across borders and through centuries of history that have left an indelible imprint on the landscape.
Journeys on foot to holy places were popular in Britain until they were banished by Henry VIII in 1538. Now, in the midst of a global renaissance of pilgrimage, old ways are being re-discovered and St Cuthbert’s Way is a beautiful and intriguing example.

Did this last month self-guided with arrangements by Absolute Escapes. Party of 4 were very pleased with all arrangements. Scenery was spectacular and was able to learn some history. Didn't see another soul until we came into our village for the night. Great maps were supplied and trail was usually well waymarked. View Ranger app was very good when we got off the trail or in an endless bog. We are all in our 70's and had no problem with the terrain in spite of a bit of rain (hurricanes Humberto and Lorenzo)

This was a great walk, the path goes through forest, fields and moor land with very little paved walking. It is well marked, regardless I did get lost a number of times. This is a more mature walk with two other paths that cross it as well as many local walking paths that intersects the way. In most places the paths are clear but it is good to know there are places where there are way marks for other intersecting walks that may cause confusion if not alert. Even-though I walked in July, I did not meet many other walkers while on the walk. Linderisfarne is beautiful end to this walk and quite after the tide comes in as most day visitors leave the island before the tide. I was glad I stayed an extra night there.

This a 62 mile (100 kilometre) long distance walk through fabulous scenery in the Scottish Borders. It follows the journeyings of St Cuthbert and runs from Melrose Abbey to Lindisfarne Priory. I have completed six long distance walks in the UK over past few years. and this is easily the best sign-posted and maintained. It goes through woods and farm land, often by the banks of the River Tweed. Over the Eildon Hills and the high moors of the Cheviot Hills. Abbeys and a castle are passed on the way and for me the high-light was walking bare-footed over the sands and through the shallows on the Pilgrims' Path to Holy Island. A reasonable amount of finess is required and some practice daily walks are to be recommended. There is ample accommodation on the route and we met walkers from the USA and Norway.
If you are a keen walker don't miss this; you will not be disappointed

Did this walk with the help of Macs Adventures, a great map and my daughters phone GPS.
It was harder than I expected, the long slow uphills however the distance was manageable.
I thought the views, the countryside and in our case the weather was perfect. The weather was Australian hot and we even got sunburnt!
The track is well signposted, particularly on the Scottish side and less so on the English side.
The sense of achievement when crossing the pilgrims path to Lindisfarne was highlight for me.
Thankyou to all we met on the path, the conversation and laughter, the silence and the opportunity for quiet thought and reflection.

This was a wonderful experience from start to finish beginning with our stay in Melrose. Each stage of the accommodation selected by Gemini was superb and their organization made it seamless and easy. The walk itself was varied and serene. We often shared the hills only with sheep. It was difficult enough to be rewarding but certainly doable for most levels of fitness. This was special.

Hello, can someone suggest how to go back to Edinburgh once you have arrived at the end of the way in Holy Island? Thank you

After you walk across to Lindisfarne, you either have to stay over (book well ahead, including booking where you want to eat) or arrange transport to get you off the island. We prebooked a private taxi £40 to get to Berwick where we had left our car.. it was only 20 mins drive but there was no alternative really. I think you can get trains fairly easily from Berwick to Edinburgh. We picked Berwick as our start point, as it was possible to get a bus from there to Melrose. On our first day we travelled to Berwick (4 hours for us) , parked the car. Got bus to Melrose and walked a few miles to our accom to get a head start on the journey.

We are planning to walk the Way March 2024. Is there somewhere to leave our car in Melrose for the 6 days we will be walking or where else should we leave it? What do others do?

Hello! I’m planning on doing this in early October. Would you recommend I book hotels in advance or can you wing it depending on how far you get each day? Thanks so much for any input!

Hi, we'd like to do this walk in october 2020. Is the weather at that time of year usually wet and muddy, or more settled?
Escrita el 8 de febrero de 2020
Just finished today.
We had a ball.
Yes there was rain and yes there was mud (wear gaiters) but the walk was great.
We booked through Absolute Escapes and all our accommodation was superb.

What type of weather can I expect beginning in August?

I plan to attempt theSt. Cuthbert's way in late July 2019. Can anyone suggest optimal distances per day for an elderly but fairly fit walker? Also, the crossing to Holy Island is a cause of some concern. Where is it best to spend the night so as to be able to cross next day without without risking drowning ... ? How long does it take to walk across?
Thanks everyone for your help

Hi everyone, I was wondering if this route was ok, to do alone? I'm a 27 year old female! Also is it well marked?

Hello - some friends and I are hiking St. Cuthbert's Way in a month or so. I would love to know 2 things that I can't seem to find online researching -
1. Mobile phones: The 4 of us have (American) cell services of AT&T (1 of us) and Verizon (the other 3). For roughly $10 a day, both Verizon and AT&T we can all international cellular, but is it even worth it on the trail? We have read it's mostly terrible reception... we may walk at different paces and need to plan our rendezvous on the go. Is it worth getting the international SIM card? Or should we just get the $10 a day package? Or is it all moot because there is no reception anyway?
2. How does on know, as you walk the trail, where a good spot to jump off and grab a bite or take a break? Are there signs along the way or do you just walk through towns and stop when you happen to see something? The map I ordered shows town names, but we can't see where there may be a pub or a shop, etc. Any tips are welcome!
Thank you! We are really excited, but we want to be safe and ready for everything from hunger to a sore foot, etc. Any additional tips are so appreciated!

Hi Penny - I am thinking of booking up to the St Cuthberts Way walk to do with my sister and your recommendation looked good. Do you have the name of the company you booked with?
Very best wishes

I am thinking of doing this walk on my own. the middle of July. Although I am a regular distance walker, i usually have a companion. My concerns are getting lost, and finding the terrain hard going, ie the hills.
Escrita el 24 de junio de 2015
I did this walk in 2016 with a walking friend. It is well signposted and of varied terrain but nothing too strenuous. We walked it in September and the route was not busy, we often walked long stretches without seeing anyone at all. Hopefully if you are walking it in July, there would be more walkers which would make it safer if you are on your own as there would be other people passing you on the route in case of accidents.
