This little musum is very well presented and a must for history and archaeology fans. The recently created add-on virtual reality experience is superb and well worth seeing. All the footage and graphics are first class. Your ticket allows return visits for 12 months. If there is any criticism it is that the extra fee for the vr experience is too high. £5 would be about right I feel. Also it would be much better if it could be screened on demand! Perhaps that will come. Well wh seeing.

Very welcoming, knowledgeable guides.
Well worth watching the two informative videos and using the small interactive information panel.

We tried out the VR experience as a family (2 x 8 year olds, 2 grown ups) and loved it. Guided by the knowledgable and personable David, we spent 20+ minutes in a virtual world learning about the Trimontium Fort and how the Romans interacted with the surrounding area and population.
We all loved the museum, with our children searching for animal figures and (sneakily!) being educated on how the Romans would have used them as a resource :D Our children also got to hold ~2,000 year old coins and brooches, leaving them with some great show & tell insights for school.
Definitely a great way to spend a couple of hours, and we'll be returning when back in the area next year to try out the upcoming VR Gladiator School.
We all loved the museum, with our children searching for animal figures and (sneakily!) being educated on how the Romans would have used them as a resource :D Our children also got to hold ~2,000 year old coins and brooches, leaving them with some great show & tell insights for school.

My wife and I visited this fantastic museum while on a short break to the Borders area. We were aware of the Trimontium fort and the hills for which the fort was named. We were unaware of how wonderful this small museum is. We were greeted by very friendly staff who are mainly volunteers. They were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They encouraged us to take the Virtual Reality experience and we are really glad that we did so. It was the highlight of our trip. The Virtual Reality is the best of its kind which we have experienced. By using the headset you can see a full 360 degree view of the 3 hills . You are then given a very realistic tour of what the fort looked like and how it operated . The quality of the graphics is outstanding and very realistic, even showing small weeds growing in the cracks between the cobbles. The museum also has the more traditional display cabinets which exhibit the fascinating finds from the fort including weapons , coins , utensils and much else besides . There are also short videos explaining some of the exhibits as well as a small cinema which shows a film about other similar sites in Scotland. We are very glad not to have missed this gem.

Well, hey ho here we go - another museum........ well that was blown out of the water by this very unassuming museum frontage. we have been round and according to the staff there is plenty more to come. Sorry I didn't find out the young mans name who answered all our questions after the VR experience which was brilliant by the way - (other museums have got to catch up with this sort of thing because there is nothing quite like it) - the knew the lot and made it exciting ;because he obviously loved what he is doing. Don't walk past this place - make sure you have enough time to throw yourself into the Roman world which was here. We will probably go back again next year as there are new things lined up - interactive VR etc.

Great museum with VR experience to bring the history to life. We had a great ‘guide’ who gave us a very interesting introduction before the VR experience. The museum itself has some wonderful artefacts and is laid out well. The staff are very friendly and the little shop has some nice souvenirs. Good for little children as well as older kids.

Visited yesterday, if you are planning to go try and book the VR experience as this is a great way to be immersed in the Roman Fort.
The small ish museum is very well laid out. Having been brought up in Melrose we didn’t really know about the history of Trimontium. A fab way to spend time in beautiful Melrose.

Fab little museum packed with information and high quality archaeological treasures. We were lucky enough to be in only the second group to see the VR film of Trimontium Fort. It was amazing and a real trailblazer!
Also highly recommend the walk to the fort. Our guide was Geraldine and she had amazing knowledge of the fort, Melrose and Newstead.

A great wee museum. Very well done and packed with information
Visual accessibility could be improved by having a darker green background and white text for the iron age exhibits. Current green with black text is very hard to read in the low light levels.
ROFL at the direct lift of the opening scene of Gladiator in the wee film. Did make me laugh .
Volunteers on the front desk were knowledgeable and super helpful. A great wee visit.
