La plaza Omonia tiene un aspecto sencillo que contrasta con lo grandioso de la plaza Síntagma. Στο κέντρο της πλατείας πάνω σε πυραμιδωτή βάση βρίσκεται το Μνημείο Πεσόντων Αεροπόρων Ίκαρος ή υποτίθεται πως είναι κάτι τέτοιο. Μοντέρνα τέχνη, μάλλον αμφιλεγόμενης αισθητικής που για κάποιον που δεν γνωρίζει το προσπερνάει αμέσως.

Non un gran vedere. Se interessa il significato della installazione ben venga, ma se non si è di passaggio non è certo una delle attrazioni da non perdere della città ..

“Though some believe the image represents a fallen angel or even Lucifer himself, it actually depicts the legendary Icarus, who is famous for flying too close to the sun and suffering the fatal consequences.
The modern take on an ancient Greek figure serves a somber purpose. It’s a monument dedicated to the aviators who lost their lives while on duty. The seven-meter figure was completed in 2000. It’s the work of sculptor Evangelos Moustakas and architect Ioannis Moustakas.
The monument is in the middle of a traffic circle ... You'll find it in Karaiskaki Square, above the Metaxourgeio Station.”

Located on Karaiskaki Square is this wonderful statue in honour of all fallen aviators of Greece and what better depiction than a statue of Icarus.
All familiar with the story ,Icarus ,the son of master builder Daedalus ,the creator the the labyrinth in Greek mythology ,attempting to escape from Crete from wings constructed by Dardalus ,the wings made from feathers held together with wax ,flying too close to the sun ,wax melted ,he fell to earth ,the actual statue is superb ,a very stylised statue ,very eye catching ,makes for some great photographic opportunities and it's easy to locate on Karaiskaki Square

Very unique monument. Sadly unkept no water or cleaning. Worth a visit. I thought it was great and wish it would have been better kept.

Ένα από τα ασχημότερα αγάλματα που έχω δει, δε δοξάζει ούτε τον Ίκαρο ούτε την τέχνη στην Ελλάδα. Το συνοδεύει κι άλλο ένα πανάσχημο άγαλμα πάνω στην ίδια πλατεία, ένα πτηνόμορφο μπροστά σε μια γυναικεία μορφή πετσοκομμένη. Καμία απορία γιατί με το που πας εκεί θες να τρέξεις μακριά από αυτή την πλατεία. Καλλιτεχνία δεν το λες, γιατί κάθε άλλο παρά το κάλλος και την αρετή υπηρετεί. Είναι όμως ένα δείγμα ισχυρό του πώς ΔΕΝ πρέπει να είναι η τέχνη.

On a busy roundabout sits this great piece of public art. Dramatic in its intensity and painful impact with stone, it conveys responses on a number of levels.
It melds wonderfully Greek myths and modern Greek events.
Mythical Icarus with hubris ignored wise counsel and flew too close to the sun that melted his wax wings causing his crash to unforgiving earth.
In contrast and bringing it up to modern times it honours the heroes of Greek aviation who lost their lives while defending their country.

We stayed across the street at the Wyndam (still known to locals as The Imperial) and liked looking out on Icarus. Of course, it is officially a memorial to fallen aviators and as such nobly intended by sculptor Evangelos Moustakas. Only the most conventional would not appreciate its starkness and fitness to its subject. This is a striking sculpture and worth seeing from around and above. This is fine art.

Πραγματικά γέλασα με την ψυχή μου με το ποσο παραστατικό είναι. Κατι τρακάρει με ενα βουνό. Πραγματικά είναι γελοίο ενα τοσο τραγικό θέμα να το δείχνουν τόσο ελαφρά... ε ρε Αβραμόπουλε δημαρχάρα...
