An amazing historic building that has been privately owned by the same family for some hundreds of years. The staff were most welcoming and helpful, from entering the castle to touring around the building.
We were lucky to have the bonus of meeting the current owner and have a delightful discussion on the benefits of living in such an historic house and the challenges of maintaining it.
The visit ended with a pleasant visit to the cafe and shop.
Good value for the entrance fee and well worth a visit.

Beautiful castle inside and out, it has a moat all the way around and the views from roof were spectacular. Admission price wasn't too bad and the gardens were lovely

Although probably only twenty miles from where I live, I'd never previously visited: possibly because it's an independent property (though part of the Historic Houses network). It's an occupied house so not open too much, but it's well worth going on one of its open days: especially in the fine weather we had today. The house is fascinating & its story & that of the family who've owned it for centuries are well told. The guides are helpful & friendly and not as intrusive as the worse National Trust ones can be. You can even go out onto the roof leads for a spectacular view. The grounds are attractive & there is a small shop & tearoom: again with most pleasant staff.

So much to see in the house. Love the Chinese decorated bedroom, the big room with the wonderful ceiling and painting of William Cecil and especially going out on the roof. Had wonderful chocolate tart and elderflower cake in the cafe before visiting the church.

More of a house than a castle - albeit one that sits behind a crenelated outer wall and a moat - Broughton is no less spectacular for it.
The house itself is strikingly handsome and appears Elizabethan, although the core of the building dates from the 1300s.
The gardens surrounding the house are pretty and well-kept, whilst the enveloping, tree-studded parkland sprawls over the adjacent low hills of the lush Oxfordshire countryside.
Inside, the rooms are lavishly decorated and furnished. Sculptures, paintings and other works of art share wall space with historic weaponry and floor space with elegant furniture. The exquisite hand-painted wallpaper in some of the rooms deserves a special mention.
It is possible to visit the roof of the house for gorgeous views over its grounds and beyond.
A house like this is, of course, steeped in history and you will learn all about it through the various information sheets and also the guides who are keen to engage you in conversation about the house and its inhabitants through the centuries.
There is a tea room in the outer wall that serves very nice drinks and snacks.
The perfect small(ish) stately home.

Had a very enjoyable time discovering the house and garden. Wonderful views over the moat from the top of the house. We needed the full time from entry time to see everything. Perhaps would have liked a little longer so we could enjoy more time at the tearoom before they closed. Only downside was the very watery hot chocolate, not recommended.

Broughton Castle is a moated and fortified medieval manor house which has been a family home for centuries.
There are many rooms to enjoy with helpful and friendly guides to answer any questions. Written information is also at hand regarding different items and paintings.
You can easily spend a good hour in the house and the entrance fee is worth the money.
The surrounding tranquil parkland is where you can walk dogs, as long as they are on the lead due to livestock being present.
A tea room sells a variety of delicious cakes with indoor and outdoor seating.
The nearby church is worth seeing too.
An adjacent small shop sells quality souvenirs.
Broughton Castle has seasonal opening times on Wednesdays and Sundays so check before visiting.

If you haven't been to Broughton Castle yet, then you must. It is quite simply one of the most spectacular buildings in the UK. Beautiful gardens, incredible interiors and surrounded by beautiful countryside it's well worth a visit. If you go with a group, as I did, then I would definitely recommend paying for tea and cakes afterwards, which were INCREDIBLE.

Absolutely wonderful! Set in glorious parkland and rose filled gardens, surrounded by a moat, the house remains a family home. The tour round is extensive and each room has a warmly welcoming guide who is glad to point out interesting features. There is even a tea room ! Only open on Wednesdays and Sundays plus Bank Holiday Mondays, this is a special place.

To a degree. The gardens are all accessible by wheelchair, so too two of the three rooms on the ground floor - the Great Hall and Dining Room (one step between them). I'm afraid the restrictions caused by being in a 1300 and 1550 house prevent us from doing much more.
All the toilet facilities, including the Disabled Toilet are in the car park.

I'm actually a Broughton descendant and will be visiting the castle. Any must sees in the area that you could suggest?
Escrita el 18 de junio de 2018
Hi - if I had a couple of days in the area I'd also aim to see Rousham, Canons Ashby, Chasleton, the gardens at Broughton Grange (only on Wednesdays) and Romeo & Juliet at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon. All within c. 15 miles. Those would make for a great couple of days! Have a good trip

Hi, Violetelizabeth80. What would you like to know about this attraction?

We are visiting from Dubai & would love to show our 4 year old twins some of their English heritage. We will be with their grandparents & looking after my sister in law's well behaved small Tsang apso dog. Is the house suitable for dogs ( inside or just the grounds/tea rooms) & children? It looks beautiful! Many thanks, Hannah

V suitable for dogs and 4 year-olds! The latter can go inside the house but not the former; lovely garden and park for the dog, and a dog bowl outside the Tea Room.

Hello
My local gardening club is considering a visit. Can you give an estimate of how long it would take to go round the Castle, and then how long to walk around the garden on average? Also, is there a best time to visit the garden - are there some times when it is particularly spectacular?
Regards
Jan

Hello Jan,
private tours of the house take about 1.15 hours; then the garden can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour plus. Roses are great late June / early July (maybe especially late June given the last week!). Tea room is nice too! As you probably know we are open 2-5pm, Wed & Sundays through to end September, but also anytime by appointment for private groups, best is to contact Joanna or Sarah - you can get their email address on our website. Hope you can make it! best rgds

Hi Simon
I'm afraid we are close now until next April. The website appears to have gone down after lots of visitors came on during the Antiques Roadshow! Soryy. Next year we are open Sundays and Wednesdays from Aoril to September, and bank holiday Mondays. I hope you will be able to come then.
