Kept seeing the lighthouse as it was close to where we were staying, so went to visit. Great views from hear and loads of parking. There are toilets in Bride, and you pass them in a reasonable car park on the road to this area.

Point of Ayre is about 7 miles up from Ramsey along smallish roads and we drove up on a drizzly windy day. It's an open area and a bit bleak - but it was well worth it. To see - there's the main lighthouse, a smaller lighthouse (The Winkie) and the Point of Ayre foghorn all within about 200yds. of the beach. Facilities are limited - we could find neither shelter nor toilets - but there's a small cafe by the lighthouse. It was closed when we visited (but it was a Sunday). The big attraction is the seals. We saw over 50 basking in the sea. If you're a "twitcher" there are many birds to see too and at night it's a clear sky area with no light pollution. Access to the pebbly beach is limited with a "walk-down" by The Winkie" with areas for nesting birds cordoned off - but full marks to the IOM for its emphasis on conservation. You're warned about getting too close to the seals as they scare easily and can injure themselves on the stony beach as they hurriedly take off into the sea - so best keep 25yds plus away. (By the way - just south of Ramsey lies Maughold Head. If you're around the Ramsey area, the little church there is well worth the visit and a narrow turn to the left 20yds. or so before the church gates takes you round to The Head. Fabulous views from there and we saw three pods of dolphins cavorting in the bay below the (no public access) lighthouse). The IOM sure knows how to show nature at its finest!

Very nice and dramatic remote place. Beautiful for taking walks, pictures or just relaxing and watch birds diving in water .. gannets and seals playing in the waves.. flora and colour in August were out of this world .. highly recommended.

Lucky we saw a picture of this place in a guide book - September was the perfect time to visit, the gorse and heather are stunning. The beach is covered with smooth, flat stones, very unusual, and it was interesting to see the Stena ferry going by. There's no facilities (although there was tea and coffee on offer from a shed at the lighthouse) so we didn't stay very long, but it's very popular with owners of motorhomes.

Incredible remote part of the Isle of man in the far North East corner where the beach meets the sea. Lots of space to go for a walk, take pictures of the Ayre Lighthouse and landscape or even have a picnic beside the beach. Highly recommend making the short trip from Ramsey to this site for anyone visiting the Isle of Man, but make sure you bring a wooly hat as it almost certainly will be windy.

I just love the Isle of Man! From one end to the other, this is a lovely spot to visit. I would love to stay in the lighthouse!

Please feel free to bring your guests to the Point of Ayre. We have created a (free) tarmac car park at the Point (found by turning right, immediately before the bottom of the lighthouse driveway). However, please also note that the lighthouse, cottages, buildings and grounds are a private family home, and therefore NOT open to visitors and/or coach parties. For your additional information, the mountains which you can see from the tarmac car park are the mountains of Dumfries & Galloway in Scotland. The part of the UK which is closest to the Isle of Man is Burrowhead Village which lies directly between the Point of Ayre and the Dumfries & Galloway Mountains. As the crow flies, this is approximately 17.7 miles away. Thank you for your interest.

In the northernmost part of the island lies the Point of Ayre Lighthouse with its distinctive red stripes.
This part of the island is ever changeable. I have visited it in various seasons. You can see snow capped mountains of Cumbria in winter.
I was there on a wild spring day. I took a walk along the coastal path.

Good views, and the waves were fabulous. The seals playing in the water were a bonus. What a wild and wonderful place.
