JUST DO IT!
Easy to find, put pellumbas into google maps it will take you to a small village where there is a local shop/guide/lamp hire. The man in the shop was very helpful, gave lots of information map and guidance. A lamp is 400 lek to hire and is definitely recommended!
The hike itself is relatively easy hiking would reccomend hiking boots for grip but we done it in normal trainers. The hike up took us about 40 minutes and about the same back down. We went all the way to the back of the cave, it is slippery in places but not too difficult to navigate once you have a lamp. Inside the cave there are lots of bats which is cool to see. Allow 2 hours from start to finish. Afterwards at the souvenir shop they do food which is traditional Albania food fresh from the local farm! PS lordi is the dog who will guide you up to the cave 😍

The Cave of Pellumbas is such a beautiful part of nature - you must you if you are in Tirana! The hike is stunning and the cave itself is so cool. Definitely rent the headlamps at the shop next to the bus station. We used iPhone flashlights and it wasn't enough to go super far in the cave.

We relied on a TripAdvisor review from 2 years ago to figure out public transportation - and it worked out perfectly! Take the bus at 7 AM from the Southeast Bus Station (it's called Terminali i Autobuzëve Juglindje - Southeastern Albania Regional Bus Terminal in Google Maps). It's tricky figuring out which bus goes to Pellumbas since they don't have signs. We just asked a bunch of people there and ended up finding the right bus. The ride takes about 30 minutes. Stay on to the very last stop. Then, you can catch the bus back at 2:30. We actually hitchhiked since we were done with the hike by 11 and didn't want to wait that long.

It was my first time visiting it! I was so tired, but the view and the cave was amazing. You can enjoy the view and you can have the best food by local bars.

First let me tell you how to reach this village using public transport. There are three buses daily from the South East bus station. At 7am, 1pm and 5pm. I suggest you take the 7am bus as I did. The same buses return from Pellumbas village at 8.30am, 2.30pm and 6.30pm. It goes by a lovely side road. The village itself is beautiful with amazing mountains around. Get off at the last stop and head into the visitor center and the cafe next door. You will find young boys (12 yr old) manning the center. To hire a guide, which you should if you are not experienced, along with helmet, headlamp it is 1000Lek and totally worth for a big group. I went by myself as I had my own headlamp and helmet. There is no entrance fee. And please try the burek at the restaurant before and after the hike. It's not only delicious but piping hot, organic and you will need it. Now about the hike.

From the start to the cave it took me 20min but for average fitness person it would take at least double that amount. The path is well marked with red and white lines but it is steep at places and on a rainy wet day you must be very careful. Great views along the way of the mountains and the gorge river below. The cave is slippery inside and of course pitch dark. There's a silvery rope inside to guide you to the very depths, though after sometime it disappears. Please take a guide if you are not experienced. You can easily get lost inside. There are many sub chambers and tunnels to explore, which I did. But I was fully equipped with clothes, light etc. It's a typical cave, not very deep or high but deep and high enough. You will enjoy the experience if this is your first time in a cave. Sad to see that people had thrown litter inside and the walls were full of grafitti. On our way back I bought tons of organic fruits from local farmers at dirt cheap price. By the way, the young kids at the center are the guides. Don't get fooled by their age, they are very good.

The hike to the cave is not an easy one as you are constantly climbing up and down, part of the trail is slippery due to loose rocks and sand. But it's a nice hike and the views are great. It took us (with 2 kids, 8 and 9) almost an hour to get there.

The first time we attempted to reach the cave, we also went wrong as apparently some of the signs are missing at a crossroad and when you go straight instead of right (up the hill), you end up on the river path. We ended up on the river path leading to the cliffs where you decent when you want to go down from the cave. (It's not possible to go up that way, there is only a rope hanging down from the cliffs. You would need real hiking equipment to use this path.) The river path splits as well at one point, one leading to the cliffs (when you follow the painted white and red stripes) and the other (not marked) takes you to the waterfall.

The cave is very slippery and you have to go up and down on the rocks, so if you are intending to explore it further, make sure you wear good hiking shoes and have a good flashlight. As our children started to slip on the rocks, we did not go too far. The cave is huge, and they have found bones of bears etc. There are plans to install electric lamps etc., but so far the cave is not equipped.
In the village you can rent flashlights, but we recommended to bring your own, heavy duty (it really is dark in there!).
Hungry or thirsty? In the village you can buy stuff, or eat at the local place.
Since there are not too many marked hiking trails in Albania, it's definitely worth the visit.

Welch ein Ausblick. Hier zu stehen ist einfach der Wahnsinn und wenn dazu noch eine frische Briese kommt, dann ist man für den Tag bedient. :)
