Makaira resort is one of the small but better resorts on Taveuni. John Makaira is a great guy to meet, funny, energetic & over all a great person. He is a very knowledgeable captain and great fisherman, going fishing on Johns boat you can never go wrong lol. Cheers John

Captain John Llanes is a blast to fish with! He knows the waters surrounding Taveuni, and he will keep you laughing all day long even if the fish are not biting. He has the knowledge, equipment and expertise to catch all varieties of pelagic fish. When those reels start going off, then the fun begins ;)

I have been to Makaira 3 times and they always catch those big ones! The yellow fin tuna are delicious and John will cook one up for you.

John has a spacious fishing boat. Large enough for five fisherman. You can’t guarantee that you catch a fish ( that’s why it’s not call catching!) but John knows the water as well as anyone I have ever seen.

Customer care is a hallmark of the Makaira Resort. Fishing with John is a pleasure!

Check out the photos for a a photo of the giant tuna she caught last week.

We have fished with John many times over the years there have been 4 different boats and many laughs. It does not matter if you are a salty dog with years of fishing experience or a novice Capt. John will make sure you are comfortable. No experience necessary.

Johns many years fishing the waters around Taveuni have given him a great understanding of the rhythms of the tides and the seasons. This coupled with the 30yrs fishing in Kona Hawaii make John the only choice if you want to fish Taveuni.

Be it just a half day charter to catch a feed, GT popping on the endless Heartbreak reef, saltwater fly fishing, bottom fishing or jigging or the ultimate Marlin fishing on lures or livebaits you will not find John wanting for knowledge or experience. If you just want to go riding and catch the sights can just don't be surprised if you keep finding Tuna schools and a lure slips over the side.

Sea Dancer has all the gear even a flush toilet and has recently been repowered with a Yamaha 200hp.

There is nothing like fishing on the tropical waters of Fiji catching a Mahi-mahi and have John cook it with cream Dill sauce back at Makaira resort.

John and Roberta were fantastic hosts throughout the whole booking and charter process.
My wife and I fished aboard the purpose built 'Sea Dancer' for the third time in as many years and with Johns help, both managed to catch our personal bests on Giant Trevally again.
John is an absolute gun fisherman who truly knows his craft and his island home and can accommodate any type of sportfishing request from big game marlin fishing, Gt sportfishing to fly fishing.
After 3 outings with Makaira I cannot recommend them enough when making a trip to Taveuni. I know I will be booking again next year on my return visit.

I'm from Hawaii and I've been told that fishing at Makaira is similar to how fishing in Hawaii was 50 years ago. That statement held true. Fishing on the SeaDancer with Cpt. John was awesome, and we got to eat some of the good things we caught. Trolling yielded yellowfin tuna, skipjack tuna, wahoo, and marlin. We got to throw big lures for GT's (giant trevally) and bottom fish for big snappers and sweet lips. Our group got the chance to go to Makaira in May, June and November in different years and the fishing was good every time we went.

..I was lucky enough recently to go out twice with John on 'Seadancer'.I have deep sea fished passionately over the last 2 decades and it was a pleasure to go out with John and wireman James!...it is very obvious that John is a passionate professional. His gear and boat were both in excellent condition, and his knowledge of the technical aspects of deep sea angling were quite amazing...I learned a few new tricks I'd never seen before!...His knowledge of the seas around Taveuni was superb and if things were quiet he very quickly had other options to keep our group excited...Although we did not hit it big we had major fun on light tackle with species such as frigate tuna, rainbow runners, scaly mackerel, blue fin trevally, garfish, queenfish etc. We had one big boil up of yellow fin tuna when John followed bird action which was very exciting, but unfortunately the tuna did not hit the lures.
We also had a good laugh with the guys and saw that John has a very distinct sense of humour!....I would fully recommend John, James and 'Seadancer' to anyone keen on a good day fishing in this beautiful part of Fiji.
