Where do I even begin to describe my time with Nkonzo. This is my second time back and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. One thing I love is that even though I’ve done it before, I still learned so much! Plus Arno and Mandi truly care about the well being of all the animals and are incredibly ethical with everything. They make sure the interns are well taken care of and are always there if anyone needs anything. I am incredibly thankful they welcomed me back and I have plans to go back very soon. Volunteering through Nkonzo is something you will not ever regret.

I was extremely pleased to learn how passionate this team of individuals is about the animals they research, and how dedicated they are to Wildlife Conservation. My participation started in January, which is not a busy month for most people looking to join and I was the only intern at the time. Therefore, I got to know and work with team member Mandy on a more one-on-one level, and this turned out great for the many questions I had about the company's research and Africa in general. :) She was fantastic! I found all of the staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and very conscientious of the total experience that their interns receive by making sure they get the most out of every day spent in the field.
I was lucky in the 2 short weeks I spent there to be able to see an array of wildlife including Giraffes, the notorious White Rhinos, a variety of antelope species, Wildebeests, Elephants, Hippos, countless birds, and even Lions! This trip was more than I could have asked for. The animals you see are truly as wild as you can get for this kind up close encounter, and they are clearly not manipulated in any way. My advice to travelers who join Nkonzo, is to come with the realistic expectations that you might not see everything, but each experience is unique and you gain so much else, besides. This being my first time in Africa, I was looking to involve myself with a company where I can be assured that the money I spend is going to legitimate field work, and not just being thrown away on "a generic safari experience". To my delight, that is definitely what I got. You won't regret the connections you will make, the people you will meet, and the contributions your field participation will lend to the larger picture of African Wildlife Conservation.

An incredible month spent in South Africa! Although relatively pricey, it is definitely worth it for the personalized attention and well-organized experience you receive.
I think it is important to know what you are signing up for. Obviously you want to see as much of the wildlife as possible so the learning side of things is fairly introductory and not very rigorous. I would describe it as an extremely informative safari-like experience but with an insight into the wildlife research and conservation field.
My main suggestion is to improve pre-departure information- perhaps have a guide to send to students. I would 100% recommend this experience, just know what you are signing up for. If you're looking to get intense in-depth experience in new research projects, it is unlikely you will achieve that in a mere 4 weeks. I went in with an extremely open mind and had the best 4 weeks.

Being a part of the Nkonzo Bush Academy was a dream come true. Arno has such a great philosophy when it comes to viewing wildlife, which I truly admire. He goes above and beyond in teaching about African wildlife, and you can feel every bit of passion. The experience was not only wonderful because of the wildlife we saw, but because Arno took the time to make sure it was a great experience. I cannot wait to see him again and visit South Africa!

I can't recommend Nkonzo Bush Academy enough - I had the best month ever at doing my internship. It was especially good for a zoology student like myself to gain practical skills in terms of wildlife research, tracking animals, dangerous game training, lectures and logging a lot of hours observing high profile animals. However, even non-zoologists/biologists can still get just as much out of the experience. It's a unique opportunity to see animals as close to being truly wild as they can be, and this makes the sightings of animals on the reserve even more special - like during my month when we eventually found the male lion after weeks of tracking and spent the whole day watching him (a moment i'll remember forever!). I would say it's a much better option than a more expensive safari package; you get to see animals in a natural environment and more importantly, you learn so much about them, and spending so much time on the reserve makes you really appreciate the experience as well as being able to see things that a lot of safari-goers don't. Arno and Mandi are so knowledgeable about the reserve, African wildlife, conservation and pretty much everything that you'd want to know. They made the whole experience so enjoyable and easygoing, although I always felt safe in the vehicles and on the reserve with them - even when we were able to get up close to the animals. I loved that the emphasis of the programme is to educate people on the problems facing African wildlife and how we should respect every single species that we had the luck to see on the reserve - I came away from the programme with a new found respect for what goes on in the background of conservation and unforgettable memories of seeing animals in their natural habitat. Most importantly, I now have the mindset of 'ethical wildlife' protocol and I know this is the area to work in. Thanks so much Arno & Mandi, I had the best month of my life and hopefully I will be back in South Africa very soon!

I enjoyed every minute spent I spent with Arno and Mandi at Nkonzo Bush Academy. My time there was much better than expected. You go daily to the amazing reserve plenty of free-roaming wildlife where you learn many things related with conservation, animal ethics and much more. You also have free time to do all the activities that Mossel Bay offers you. Accomodation, food and staff was just perfetc. I can´t imagine a single thing that could be better!! If you love wildlife and are interested in conservation and so on, I can´t recommend a better place to go!!

After 3 months in Africa visiting different game reserves,my time with Arno and Mandy at Nkonzo was easily the highlight of my trip. Arno and Mandy are two of the most hospitable people I have ever met and truly care about their clients. I could instantly feel there passion and knowledge which gave me a very unique and individual experience out on the game reserve. Thanks to Arnos expertise on big game approach in only one day I was able to see some of my favourite sightings and take the best photos in all of my Africa trip. Getting up so close to a male lion was truly amazing. The thing I enjoyed the most was how much respect they both had for not only the wildlife but also the local environment.I would highly recommend Nkonzo Bush Academy to anyone as my experiance was second to none.
