My second visit after about 10 years and even more amazing now with the excellent video. As I also have a private museum I can understand the love and effort, let alone expense, that has gone into the magnificent museum and memorial. Many thanks for the privilege of visiting again.

Beautiful and interesting museum to visit. The story of their daughter's passing is heart-breaking. Interesting to see all the antique irons and washers. This museum is well- maintained. It is advisable to watch the video before walking through the museum.

It is so special that her family opened the Museum in memory of her that she die so young and she was fully committed in the business.

We really struggled to find this place & this limited the time we had available which was rather unfortunate.. The sign of the museum is quite small but just find the laundromat with the pink signage. The museum will be opened for you & there was no cost
We were amazed at what irons & washing machines looked like way back when. Apparently all the contents were donated through grandparents & the public, We would like to return & spend some time viewing things properly

Thanks for visiting. During 2005 Janines parents bought the iron museum that existed in Kleinmond since 1976, and added rare washing machines bought locally and imported from abroad. After their daughter Janine passed away during 2014, they converted the collection to a museum called the Janine Ion and washinh museum. They donated the museum to a ever ongoing trust , never to be sold or to gain any profit.
There is a 20min video explaining the history of ironing and washing since 3500 bc.

I usually check TripAdvisor for places to see. As it is Janine museum I had to have a look. We had difficulty in finding the place and was advised by a friendly lady at a market in Mosselbay. There is so much to see and the info boards give enough details We love getting to know our history and these type of museums just make it so relatable

I never thought that washing and ironing could be so interesting. So much time and attention has be put into this. Make the effort and pop in.

My hubby said best Museum he has visited. A large variety of antique irons and washing machines. Watch the informative short video first. Very interesting and takes you back in time. Sad that the family lost their daughter- Janine, to whom the museum is dedicated. Free to visit

Recently seen this museum and i must say its worth the visit. Very informative. Enjoyed it very much. A must see in Hartenbos.

I was so pleased that I had read on TA about the existance of this museum in Hartenbos as we were able to break our journey to Stilbaai to visit it.
Top marks to Jan Ellis and his wife for putting together what must be one of the most comprehensive collections of laundry parafinalia - I would imagine its pretty unique!
The introductory DVD did an excellent job of looking at the developing technology in this field through the years. I found the demonstrations of the use of some of the older irons, particularly enlightening.
The exhibits are arranged according to categories and Mr Ellis encouraged us to pick up one of the "sad irons" to feel its weight.... surprisingly heavy!!
Set aside at least an hour to see the collection, but take note, its easy to lose track of time as you get drawn in to the exhibits - there is literally a day's worth of things to engage your attention, stimulate memories and marvel at the way technology has improved the housewives' lives.
