Excellent Gellery with knowledgable owners
dic. de 2019
We do NOT like the usual tourist tat! Forgive the language. When we travel we like to bring nice evocative items back to our home. This Gallery provided all of this. Nice Aboriginal background music , nice surroundings and knowledgable owners who knew their wares.
We bought an Aboriginal Spear and Woomera (spear thrower) and the owner wrapped it for Air Travel. (We did have to plastic wrap and check BUT items are in our house intact. We also bought a whole lot of other items which were carefully bubbled. Prices reasonable BUT you get what you pay for!

I visited a number of art centres in Sydney. This one is perfect. I bought a didgeridoo and was well advised. No pressure and sound advice.

A very educating gallery.

If you want to know more about Aboriginal art, it is a good start to go to an exceptional gallery, to have a taste. The Karlangu Aboriginal Art center is a middle size compilation that you can see during 1-2 hours. Of course, it is depending how much time do you have, and how interested you are. It is only a short walk away from Wynyard station on 47 York Street. This gallery shows you an abundance of exciting artwork. Mostly paintings, in every size, including several square shaped pictures, 36 cm x 36 cm in size, on unstretched canvas and quite large ones for much more money of course. Most of the paintings are in the first room, with some didgeridoos, coolamons, hunting clubs, etc. The pottery is mostly in the second room also with some pictures, coolamons, bull-roarers emu-callers and pieces of jewelry. ( If I remember well, since to take photos in the gallery is prohibited, so I have to rely on my memory.)
My favorite artist is Michael Lyons, and from whom is especially the Drought in Wiradjuri. Nearly equally I liked the pair of this painting, the Flood in Wiradjuri. When I was looking at the different wooden items, I happily realized, that some he artworks that Liked most, were also from him. Excellent hand painted hunting clubs, bullroarers, coolamons, and emu-callers, and boomerangs. They’re so beautiful that it is hard to choose from them. I would be happy with anyone of this unique artworks. My other chosen painting is the “Sweet potato dreaming” from Audrey Martin Napanangka, and also from her the Goanna dreaming and a very pleasant coolamon. Tony Sorby has some interesting paintings too, from the "Journey tracks for sacred sites, the -Sandstone caves, and the - Water sites. At last but not least let me mention Jamie Eastwood (Mugudun) two paintings, the Gecko and the Lizard.
When I mention a few artists and artworks, these are only my individual choices. Everyone has a different taste, other people would choose different artists and items, so I don’t try to suggest that they are better than the other ones, but I really loved them. If suddenly I would become wealthy I would be quickly spending a considerable amount of money, and after worrying to buy a bigger house to find a home for them.
The gallery is very well organized, you can search for the artworks on their website. Here you can find every kind of information about the artists and the different items.

Amazing Art Gallery
ago. de 2017 • Familia
Ali Azimi offers with this gallery a cosy place where daring to enter and browse through beautiful art is made possible. While being in Sydney, I really fell in love with Aboriginal art and wished to bring something home. In Karlangu, I found both amazing artists and an art dealer I could trust. I was astonished to be able to touch and move art while standing in my sunburned and sweaty tourist glory (with my family, we were back from a - hot - day at the zoo), to hear the story behind each work and to learn so much about the artists. That time, I selected a beauty from Tony Sorby. Since then, I have followed the gallery online and bought two more pieces from different artists and enjoyed the experience each time: a fair price for all parties, quick answers to all mails, many options for the payment, swift sending of the parcel (it takes something like 6 days to travel from Australia to France) and of course, the paintings themselves. Just be aware that as beautiful as the pictures on the site are, they never really do justice to the originals and you will be amazed at what you receive. I cannot recommend this gallery warmly enough.

Lovely service and quality items

This is such a lovely gallery/shop to visit. I wanted to buy an authentic, beautifully crafted didgeridoo for my brother's wedding present, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The manager told me all about the didgeridoos, and gave me a fantastic demonstration on what they sounded like. I shipped a very fancy didgeridoo (serpent carved into a knot in the wood) back to the UK, and my brother was so happy with it. Thank you! It makes such a difference to know about the artist and see genuine talent. I will be back!

A fine shop of Aboriginal Art
jul. de 2017 • En solitario
We stumbled upon this shop on York Street, Sydney. The quality of the work was evident as soon as we entered the store. The manager, only worker when we were there showed us the artwork, the boomerangs and other aboriginal work. The prices were fair and we got a discount.

Nice Selection

This is a nice place to go look at Aboriginal art and perhaps take some home. The curators are helpful but they give you your space. Authentic art at prices comparable to other places in Sydney. A nice quiet gallery away from the main tourist area.

Such a welcoming space

Just visited Karlangu with my 3 to 4 year old preschool class and everyone there was lovely. The artwork was so beautiful and the stories the children learned from the paintings will surely stick with them. Especially the Three Brothers story. Thank you so much!
