This is such a beautiful and peaceful nature/movie-goer walk! You can hear the birds chirping and the water trickling from the beautiful river. Much like others in the comment section have said, the arch isn't a full scale replica of what Rivendell looked like from the movies. However, all of the plaques throughout the walk have really wonderful information about how the set was designed and where each scene was located back during filming days. If you have 30-60 minuets to spare, it is worth your time for any Lord of the Rings fans.

Beautiful spot only 30- 40 minutes from Wellington city. Even allowed to light a fire beside the river. Clean toilets, kitchen area. Bath in the river is invigorating. Very easy to pay with automatic machines.
Great for families and large groups or just on your own.

Another Lord of the Ring film location, this is where the gate of Rivendell. The actual gate is only around 5 mins from the car park, if you expect it is something grand like the movie, you might be a little disappointed. The park itself is beautiful, walking through the forest is amazing.
The swing bridge track is also worth a hike, the kids would enjoy the excitement crossing the swing bridge.

My husband and I are big Lord of the Rings fans and we were so excited to come here. We loved seeing Rivendell and only wish they had not had to take the set down. I am sure it was MAGICAL! But they do still have the arch you can get a picture with. If you are also a fan, I suggest taking the Rover Rings full day excursion as we did so you can learn even more about Rivendell and hear the behind the scenes stories and cast drama. Would love to come back and explore the rest of the park though.

My wife and I were on a tour and visited this location. Unfortunately there was not much left of the Lord of The Rings movie set.

The nearby Kaitoke Regional Park was the filming location for exterior shots of Rivendell for the movie – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

This lovely area on the upper reaches of the Hutt River has gained fame as the place where the Rivendell scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. Fortunately it is more than just a filmset. It is an area of ancient tees, shaded walks and the river gorge with its shingle beaches and swimming holes. The walks are not onerous, but wind through rainforest, crossing the river twice before bringing you back to the car park. If that's not enough wilderness for you, there are camping, barbecue and picnic areas for longer stays. A handy coffee cart at the entrance serves up a refreshing brew just as you like it.

Easy to access via the SH2 north of Wellington. Decent size car park with toilets and clear signs directing you to various walks, giving the estimated time required. The swing bridge is fun, and there are lovely walks on the river bank. Rivendell is well signposted and has a few noticed boards leading you around the short walk to the famous archway. Well worth a visit for LOTR fans

My partner is a LOTRs fan and wanted to see the location where Rivendell was filmed. There's a few remnants from the film left for photo opportunities and apart from that just a nice location to take a stroll through.

They say driving up to campsite in the daytime when the sun is shining is something to behold; try driving to the campsite as the sun is setting..

We camped here as part of our make-shift Lord of the Rings road trip, and well out of all the places we visited this was the place where New Zealand stole my heart.

As you explore from the camping area, you are confronted by the lush mountains, the river flowing with clear mountain water, and then hidden a little further up the trail is the location where Rivendale was constructed.

The place is so peaceful, birdsong, the breeze rustling the trees, and the camp ground isn't too bad either; nicely situated in the foreground to this monument of natural beauty.

Local amenities are located in the nearby towns that dot the Wine Trail, so you shouldn't run short of supplies.

One thing I will say, pack a head torch as it gets rather dark; and unless you set up camp on top of the toilet block, the trip there in the middle of the night becomes one hell of an adventure..

This place is made for exploring by yourself, with the family or friends, or with a mad dutch chap like I did..

Large regional park. Easy to find and lots of maps and areas within. Can easily drive to the area you want to explore and park. Great for young kids because you can choose from 15 minute walks to hours.

Cheap camping available with rubbish and recycling. Toilets and look out points.

Swing bridge was our stop and it was a good little outting for our family. Picnic tables and walking tracks throughout.
