La pasamos muy bien en la isla gracias al gerente de operaciones del campamento. Puedo recomendar encarecidamente un viaje a la isla, que está muy cerca de Auckland.

El personal de motutapu nos escoltó alrededor de la isla, mostrándonos cómo ha sido restaurada la isla. La guardería donde se crían las plántulas, que luego se plantan alrededor de la isla, en su mayoría hechas por voluntarios. El centro de educación al aire libre, que atiende a varios grupos, especialmente escuelas. Las fantásticas vistas y solo la historia de la isla. Bien vale la pena el corto viaje en ferry desde el centro de Auckland

A beautiful island with a range of walks (allow plenty of time if you want to do any of the walks). We were very lucky to see two Takahe (native NZ bird).

We had a lovely time on the island thanks to the camp's operations manager. Can highly recommend a trip over to the island,which is super close to Auckland.

Restoration of motutapu

We were escorted around the island by motutapu staff, showing us how the island has restored. The nursery where seedlings are raised, which are then planted around the island, mostly done by volunteers. The outdoor education centre, catering for various groups, especially schools. The fantastic views and just the history of the island. Well worth the short ferry ride from downtown Auckland

picture a leisurely cruise out to an (almost) deserted island only minutes away from the CBD. a healthy walk over the island past defensive fortifications and Maori sites brings you to a fantastic beach with lots of fish to look at and views over to the North Shore

So worth it

so beautiful, surrounded by sea with historic gun placements, tunnels, a working farm, pest free, an education centre & the homestead! It's a trek but easily done! Bring food because there are no shops. Hard to believe the big smoke is just a ferry ride away. Now if DOC just do their bit by clearing the weeds [or allowing others] around the placements it would be more user friendly. Seriously, knee high & prickly & there were famillies while I was there.

Beautiful Day Trip

Visited Motutapu during Easter holidays. My friend and I planned to do trekking but we didn't search much information. We wanted to be flexible on our holiday. :)
The treks are quite short and simple compare to its neighbor (Rangitoto) We spent only 3 hrs in total.
Then we chilled out on at the camping area. The weather was really nice, so chilly. :))

Suggest to bring a swimming suit, or if you have your own kayaks, jet boats, it'd be funnier.

Quiet, less people and more private. IMOP

Don't miss the chance

Since Motutapu is connected to Rangitoto Island it only seem logical to se both. This is a full day, if not more, adventure. The walking tracks will take you to every part of the Island and offers spectacular views of the interior landscape as well as the ocean. You will be immediately greeted by rolling meadows and working farms. It is a small slice of country life in a beautiful setting. A bonus for history buffs is that the Island in sprinkled with military placements.

Great walk from Rangitoto Ferry Warf over to Motutapu

An easy 2 - 2 1/2 hour walk from Rangitoto Island (you can take the Ferry from Auckland City across to Rangitoto), Motutapu Island is separated by a bridge. It is well worth the walk as the views along the walk are stunning. Best to go over during Late November - Early April when the weather is warmer/nicer.

Fantastic Day Visit

Little known and seldom visited, Motutapu Island is across the causeway from Rangitoto and closer to the city than Waiheke. Maintained by the Department of Conservation it includes a working farm, beaches, WW2 history. The highlight however is that it is one of Auckland's "Treasure Islands" - a pest free haven for native species. The Motutapu Restoration Trust have planted native forest behind the historic Reid Homestead. We saw saddleback, kakariki, tui, fantails, quail among others. Missed the takahe unfortunately. The Trust opens the Reid Homestead at weekends and offers tea and coffee to visitors. Explore Ferries call at Home Bay on weekends allowing 5 hours to roam the island or you can make the arduous trek from Rangitoto wharf on other days. We loved the serenity and the wildlife and will be back soon.
