Amazing

What a find. Very interesting indeed. What a cultural melting pot Broken Hill was...after the synagogue look out the back for the titanic collection and dinky toys. Margaret was wonderful and also showed us photos of the construction of the desert sculptures - a lovely unexpected bonus. I would urge anyone to come here and experience this synagogue.

Interesting little museum.

Very interesting and well laid out. Gold coin donation. About 40 mins to an hour. Also a nice titanic display and dinky car display in the shed outback.

Very worthwhile visit

Great walk through the old synagogue and learning about the history of Broken Hill and the Jewish Settlers. Margaret is a treasure trove of information, and was happy to sit and have a chat. It's more than just an old Synagogue, it's a portal to days gone by.

Unusual to find

Remarkable small museum depicting many aspects of life in Broken Hill, as well as the Jewish connection .
Custodian Margaret was a wonderful lady who gave us so many insights which only a long term local could share.

An important historical must-do
oct. de 2019 • Familia
This place houses a small but fascinating part of Jewish/Australian history and a great surprise to find in Broken Hill. Margaret was generous in sharing her time and knowledge with our group, and I got the sense I was in the most isolated (ex) synagogue on earth- and how important it must have been in sustaining its community. Thanks for maintaining this treasure!

Significant historical synagogue

This place is a fascinating piece of history in Broken Hill.
It is not part of the beaten tourist track but the insight to how things were done in days gone by is a little fascinating.
Still looking as it always was in
Many ways
with information displayed about some of the cultural and religious practices on small signs.
If you are jnrerested in this kind of early Australian history then you will love this site.
Check with the visitor information centre about when it’s open.
Not really commercialised in any way and staffed just by local volunteers this was an unexpected cultural encounter in the Hill

A group of us had a wonderful morning looking through this museum Margaret the guide has a wealth of knowledge about the Jewish community both past and present. Out the back there is a great Titanic and model car collection which we found very interesting.

We appreciated the fascinating history of this remarkable place.Great credit to the Historical Society for maintaining this little known story in such fine condition.I noticed that the other visitors today were also very engaged by the exhibition and interested in the House and Synagogue and asking the Guide lots of questions.
amazing to realise these hardy souls came from the Ukraine in the 19 th Century to this most remote place and made a success of their lives.

An Historical Oddity.
abr. de 2018 • Amigos
A Synagogue in the Outback seems unlikely, but there was a large Jewish population in Broken Hill at the end of the 19th Century, mainly from Eastern Europe / Russia, who had fled homeland persecution. They plied their traditional trades, mainly tailoring and commerce, and wanted a place to worship traditionally, so built their own Synagogue which remained active for many decades until the Jewish population died out or moved elsewhere. Congratulations to the local Historical Society who have restored the site and turned it into a museum and HQ to remind us of an aspect of Community which would have otherwise been forgotten.

Great experience

Really enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the remote Jewish community and its roots. Margaret and Jack were terrific hosts who were extremely keen to share their knowledge and a pleasure to engage with. The museum was closed when we got there, but we contacted them and they offered to open up outside of normal hours so we could go through.
