If you can drive this highway on a motorcycle, you will get the most amazing views. We went in August 2013 and the memory is seared into my mind. Take layers as the temperatures will drop as you ascend this almost 11k ft mountain pass. Plan for a full day of driving and time to stop and take a break on the way up. the views at the top are worth the drive.

I drove over this on a nice sunny day. It’s amazing how high up you go. The sites are amazing. I even saw some mountain goats that were lower than I was.

The Beartooth Hwy is most definitely worth seeing! I would rank the Beartooth as being on par with roads like Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, and Going to the Sun Road in Glacier NP. I would strongly recommend that you get out of your car and explore the sights along the route. For families with young children there’s several waterfalls, snow fields and small glaciers, as well as numerous overlooks that are only a short distance from the road that will make the trip much more enjoyable. Moreover, if you have the time, then I would recommend driving on at least part of the Chief Joseph Highway near the western end of the Beartooth Hwy.

Amazing! This is a must do when in Cody. We decided to take the entire pass from Cody to Red Lodge in Montana. The 65 mile per hour speed limit is either laughable or a demented challenge as the road is comprised of extreme curves with no guardrails and extreme drop-offs! But the views are unbeatable. Make sure you go during the daylight hours to enjoy the ride!

Breathtaking views everywhere you look. There are plenty of places to stop to take pictures or hike at your heart’s content. At one point, the highway reaches 10,000+ feet in elevation. Some parts of the road require maintenance while other portions are smooth and well maintained.

beautiful scenery but part of the beartooth highway is under construction due to part of the road collapsing (as of 22 June 2021). Road construction starts just after Pilot and Index Peak Overlook. The Clay Butte Tower was closed as the construction workers are parking on the road leading up to the Tower. Construction ends a couple of miles before the Top of the World Store. Delays run between 20-40 minutes, depending on the time of day that you are there.

We decided to drive from the northeast corner of yellowstone back to Cody. This will take you on the Beartooth highway until you get to 296. This is a long drive but has a beautiful view of the northeast corner of the park and the valley. Be careful as there are cows all over the road (open range), a lot of switchbacks, no cell service and road construction. Additionally, you may get stuck behind slow moving trucks. Allow yourself plenty of time for this and make sure that you enjoy the sights because there are several absolutely breathtaking views from one end of the valley to the other.

We ended up on Bear Tooth Highway totally by chance, after stopping in Sheridan, Wyoming for breakfast. The very amiable owner of Flagstaff Cafe told us that Bear Tooth was by far the most scenic route to Yellowstone, and was worth veering a hundred miles off the main route to find it. What a stroke of good fortune.

Bear Tooth Highway is mostly a slow 2-lane, winding, climbing and sometimes precarious route that's closed in winter. The original road was built in 1881 and was the first passage carved across the Bear Tooth Mountains, from Rock Creek to Red Lodge. The speed limit drops to 25 mph at the many hairpin curves. You'll be driving a few feet from the edge of cliffs with thousand-foot drops. Vistas are spectacular.

The national parks service constructed a couple of excellent look out points along the route, including a gorgeous pit stop at Rock Creek (elev 9190 feet) with restrooms, where you can park your car and hike a bit to get close up views of the flora and fauna. There is no admission fee, and the main path can accommodate a wheel chair.

The terrain changes continually as you drive Bear Tooth, from tree-covered rolling grassy hills to steep rock faces, to crumbling soft rock, to pristine mountain lakes, to snow at the very top. We parked the car near Bear Tooth Pass and trudged over a few thousand feet of rugged terrain to reach a patch of snow (in August) for a photo op because Floridians don't see much snow.

If you do venture off the main tourist areas, be aware that you're taking your life in your hands. At the end of the slushy snow patch we visited was a sharp drop off, which could have been the end of me, had my feet slipped. I stayed ten feet from that edge, just close enough so I could see the drop below.

The temperature fell from ninety degrees to fifty-eight degrees, with stiff winds at the top of the highway. Bring a jacket. And don't miss this drive, if you have the opportunity to go.

One important note - if you're in a hurry, don't take this route. We were delayed for precisely thirty minutes at Beartooth Butte due to road construction on a high pass. One lane of road was missing entirely just south of here, and a flagman driving at less than 20 mph had to lead the procession of cars on the remaining lane in each directions, while graders and cranes hung on the edges of cliffs adjacent to car traffic. Cars were permitted to pass in 30-minute intervals, while the construction crews halted work.

This is a must-do drive on the way to Yellowstone. Lots of places to pull over to enjoy great views. Tons of switchbacks and narrow curves in this drive. Beautiful drive!

Hands down the best Highway I've ever ridden on my bike!
Coming from Cody, I stayed in Red Lodge and hit the Beartooth in the late morning headed towards the north end of Yellowstone park.
Even though it was August, it was pretty brisk going up over the Beartooth, when I reached the top it was about-face 32 degrees, the many switchbacks and corners and elevation changes combined with an awesome view help me forget about the chilly weather and just enjoy the ride. When I got to the other side I stopped at the little roadside store, I forget the name of it but it is full of Beartooth patches signs and what nots... You do not want to miss this trip, especially if you are riding.
