There is not much to see or do here. There are some low rock walls left from an earlier settlement and some walking trails. A very unfriendly park worker was there.

At the Lapakahi State Historical Park in North Kohala, you learn about the life of the people that occupied this area. They left behind remnants of their daily lives involved fishing, housing and religious beliefs. It is a walking tour on uneven rocks, stones and pebbles. The total trail is less than 1 mile. Snorkelers and swimmers can access the water from here. No lifeguards. The offshores of Lapakahi, rich in fish and corals, is designated a Marine Life Conservation District. Limited parking.

We stopped to see if we could spot any mink seals but there weren’t any on our visit. However, it was still a nice walk. The path is uneven with small and medium loose rocks. It’s definitely not good for strollers or people with mobility issues. There’s free parking and no entrance fee.

We enjoyed hiking the loop trail and reading the brochure at the numbered stops. It's amazing how well preserved the walls from the structures are. It's hard to imagine how difficult it was for the Hawaiian residents to live off the land so long ago. It's a very pretty area also, with palm trees and great ocean views, including the island of Maui across the channel.

Just one rather strange experience as we were leaving. We were well aware of the 4pm closing time and we were the last visitors there. We drove up the road to the gate and stopped just before the gate at exactly 3:47 so I could get out of the car and take a photo. At the same moment, a park employee started closing the entrance gate and then stopped and glared at me, obviously wanting me to hurry up and leave. He continued to glare at us as we drove out.

What I don't understand is this: Why doesn't the guy just come to close the gate at 4pm? Maybe they should list the park hours as "8am until we decide to close the gate." Anyway, it was a good visit other than that.

We simply stumbled on this park as we were driving north. It's a beautiful location with an easy and really informative self guided park. It's not a luxury place but it is really a wonderful location to learn about the people who lived here first. If you like history you can easily do 45 minutes here and learn a lot.

Great views, nice swimming area although the beach is rocky so we didn’t go in. We were one of the only cars there (weekday, mid-afternoon) and did a short self-guided tour using the trail maps located at the front of the park. I wish there was more information but there were basic explanations showing old canoe storage areas, houses, and salt-making stations (see photo). There were picnic benches so we took a lunch break there.

Brought friends for the historical self-guided tour. Very informative. We were pleasantly surprised to see the snorkeling area with all the yellow tang and many other fish. We then came 2 other days to snorkel here. Out of all the snorkeling we did on our 10 days on the Big Island, this was our favorite. Easy access, few people, and a multitude of beautiful fish! Can't wait to travel to Hawaii once again and go snorkeling here. Just be aware: no towels, no sunscreen.

Such an informative site to visit. Make sure you grab a brochure at the map sign. It explains each of the sites. There is a small snorkel beach there as well with beautiful fish. It is right off the highway and there is no cost. Our self-guided tour ended a little early because it started to downpour.

We accidentally came across this area while driving along the northwestern coastline of the Big Island and we were really glad that we stopped and checked out this area. It was once an ancient Hawaiian fishing community and it's really fascinating to see and has been well maintained. The shoreline here is also really beautiful. Parking was very easy. Wear a hat if it's not too windy too as its very exposed when you're walking here. There is no charge to enter either, it's free.

We visited Hawai’i five years ago and this was on our must-return list. When guided by the brochure, there’s a lot of history that you can learn. We also liked the fact that the brochure explains some of the plants that grow near the trail. The only slight criticism is that the “secondary” trail is less intuitive to follow than the main trail; it could use a couple of markers. This visit was just as great as our first visit had been, and this is our favorite of the oceanside parks on the NW of the Big Island.
