Don’t listen to anyone else that says they can do this is a rental car. Nope! Luckily we had a Jeep Cherokee. Take the road near the cemetery and keep going. When the road gets to your first Y in the road, stay right. The first couple of miles aren’t that bad but then the road starts to get really rutted as soon as you start to climb. The 5 mile mark you will see a gate. If you have any doubt about your ability to drive the road or your vehicle, use this area to turn around now. The road gets worse from here until you get to a parking area at the overlook. You’ll park here and hike the rest. The boardwalk and surrounding area are wet and the weather can change quickly. Bring rain gear. Once you get to the end there are a few places to have lunch and the view of the valley all the way to the sea is amazing. It’s worth it! Remember to keep track of time because you have to go back down the road and it would be much harder in the dark.

CHECK THE WEATHER PRIOR TO GOING. DO NOT GO UP THE HILL IF IT HAS BEEN RAINING.

Wow! Worth the trip to Moloka’i! Rent a good 4WD l. We parked close to the entrance of the Preserve and hikes all the way to the trail (as the road gets really muddy after some rain). Though you can drive all the way to the Pepe’Opae trailhead at the end of the road with a good vehicle. We passed by fragrant Eucalyptus groves, tall Ironwood pines. The Wailuku Lookout was gorgeous after the clouds cleared up in the afternoon (last 2 pics). The Pepe’Opae trail itself was a trip back in time with moss covered trees, ferns. At the end, there is a beautiful lookout. We had the trail all to ourselves! It was wet and boggy at parts, but the beauty of the trail is so worth it! Would return to Moloka’i just for this hike.

When planning our trip to Molokai, the Waikolu Valley overlook was the thing I was most looking forward to seeing. We rented an SUV specifically to help us with the road out there. However, when we tried to go, the road out there was blocked off. There was a locked gate with 2 sign on it. One said “No hunting” and the other said “No trespassing, trespassers will be prosecuted.” It seems like somebody thinks the entire area behind the road, including all 9 miles or so to the overlook is their private property, though I think it is not. Either way, we were not able to visit. Not sure if there’s any way around this (physically, there’s not; this road is the only way there), or anything you can do to make sure the gate’s unlocked or open when you go. It’s a shame, I think it would have been really cool.

I rented a 4x4 from a local company, and you will need one for this trip. They allowed me to drive it up to the Waikolu Lookout, which itself is a nice attraction. The view from the Waikolu Lookout is outstanding, comparable to the Kalalau Lookout in Kauai. I talked story with a friendly local here for about a half hour, which was a nice treat.

My destination was the Pepeopae Bog. I parked my vehicle at the Waikolu Lookout, as the car rental company told me that I'm not allowed to take it past this point since the road would be too rough. So, I started the hike to the Kamakou Preserve (Pepeopae Bog), which took me about 90 minutes. It is a mix of uphill and downhill portions through a beautiful forest. Honestly, I'm pretty sure my rental could've made it through this part, as the road seemed pretty well maintained. If it's muddy, that may be a different story, however.

Once I got to the bog, the scenery changed to more of a jungle/swamp setting, which was very fun and interesting. Just stay on the boardwalk and it'll take you all the way to the end. It took me about an hour or so to get to the end. And once you get to the end, you get treated with the most amazing view... If you're familiar with Kauai, I'd say the view rivals or may be even better than the famed Kalalau Valley. I had lunch there and relaxed for about an hour before heading back. Most likely, you will have the views all to yourself, as I did. It's so quiet and peaceful, and the air is so fresh, I could spend all day there.

If you can rent a 4x4 and like a moderate hike, then I highly recommend this attraction! Also, try to go as early as possible, as it would probably be difficult to drive back in the dark.

This moss covered high elevation rain forest is just amazing. You follow a boardwalk through a bog to a great lookout. It took us a whole day. We drove our 4WD vehicle to Waikolu lookout - the road was dry and easy to drive, we did not even need to engage the 4WD (would have been necessary had it been wet). We decided to walk from here to the preserve as we are not experienced 4WD drivers. As the trail was dry we probably could have driven it in 4WD but there were a couple of spots that looked pretty difficult even in dry conditions. It was 2.2 miles to the Pepe'opae Trail which is 1.5 miles long so a round trip of 7.4 miles of walking. Add in the drive to and from the lookout where we parked the car and we were driving the last part of the 4WD road home in the dark! I recommend starting out pretty early so you can get back onto the main road before it gets dark. We were here January 2018.

This hike was amazing. We were blest with dry weather for a few days before we visited and the most perfect weather the day of. But I'll start at the beginning!
First of all, DO NOT put Waikolu Lookout into your GPS because it will send you to a gated permit road that looks ill maintained. If you put "Maunahui-Makakupa'ia Trail Head" into google maps, it will take you to the right road! I've included a photo of a good map for the entire trail. It is the road with the Homelani Cemetary sign. From there you follow a pretty clear road all the way up: Forest Reserve and then the Waikolu Lookout. Great spot with bathrooms and camp area with permit. Since the roads weren't muddy, we were able to drive past the Waikolu Lookout and make it about 2/3 to the preserve before deciding it wasn't worth getting stuck and parking on the side of the road (they have small turn around points you can get out of the road with). From there we hiked about 30 minutes to the gate in the Kamakou Preserve (you actually enter the preserve earlier on the trail). And from there it's a beautiful unearthly environment with a small wood board to balance on and spectacular views at the end. You will get your feet wet, I slipped off and only had water up to my ankles. There are fallen trees to scramble around and ruined boards to navigate. There are two places to look out at the end, keep going until there isn't a board trail anymore. We didn't get there until 1pm and were lucky (from what others have said) that there weren't any clouds low in the sky to disrupt our view. The only downside to no rain was that there weren't any waterfalls running at the end but I'll take the clear skies and no mud any day.
We did it all in 4 hours, hiking at a moderately fast speed. I would add at least another hour if walking from the lookout and more if the road is muddy. I wouldn't take anything other than a 4x4 or if you're confident, a high clearance vehicle. Hope this helps someone else enjoy this hidden must-see!

June 2018 my sister and I went for a guided hike with the Nature Conservancy. There were about 8 of us and Russell was our guide. It was amazing. It's not for the faint of heart - you are walking on a 6" board most of the time. But, the plants you see and the views are amazing. Highly recommend it. We're both in our 50s, so if you are a little in shape, you can do this.

The road isn't as bad as most make it to be. Yes you need 4x4 and know how to drive and be familiar with one. If it's been raining then be very cautious or try another time. The hike to the overlook is absolutely breathtaking, if you beat the clouds. Go very early. This vista puts Kalalau valley in Kauai to shame. I wouldn't call the hike difficult but because of the remoteness and some dangerous areas if you step off the 2x6 planks I wouldn't recommend if you aren't in decent shape.

The plants we saw on this walk were amazing. Our leader was very knowledgeable, and the other participants were a great group of people. Walking on the boardwalk was a test of our balance abilities, and we did get our feet wet and muddy. It was cool up at that altitude and in the shade, so recommend a light rain coat. Was an experience of a lifetime!
