I write this as someone who lives in Shola area. It was Addis Eats/Goaddis tours who started taking folk to Shola M. Very good idea.
1. Far less hassle for tourists OR foreign residents... than in Mekarto.
2. Less traffic jams on the way in, in fact none.
3. Smaller and for a tourist more genuine view of the main market for the eastern suburbs..
4. Lovely people BUT do ask before taking pictures.

Sholla Local Market in Addis Ababa is a great market to visit. It is less crowded than the famous Merkato Market. Sholla Market is a great option for visitors who don't feel comfortable with big crowds. It is also a nice marketplace to interact with locals and make photos freely. It is still the same bargaining for price when you are shopping. If you are taking pictures of individuals, it is appropriate to ask for their permissions before. Taking photoshoots of general scenes is normally accepted.

we got some athletic gear from the place. Real cheap. I got a suitcase too. You have to know how to bargain. Some silver ornaments.

I planned my visit to the Sholla Market based upon my experiences visiting markets throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Lao, Malaysia, and Nepal. I am a serious amateur photographer. I found markets to offer wonderful opportunities to photograph people going about their daily life as well as great places to interact with local people.
My experience at the Sholla Market to be quite different. I went with a local guide and I strongly recommend that you use one. The vendors, in general, refused to be photographed. I found most of the vendors to be rather surly and sensed an overall negative vibe at the market.
The walkways are uneven, very narrow and were muddy due to recent rains making footing, at times, challenging.
I can not recommend a visit to the market.

Visitar o Sholla Market é uma experiência incrível! São tantos produtos nativos, desde frutas a temperos, variedades de grãos de café...Mesmo que não compre nada, o passeio em si vale a pena, pois você se depara com itens que não se encontram no Brasil. Destaco os inúmeros tipos de pimentas. Aliás, em certas partes do mercado, o ardor da pimenta fica tão presente no ar que chega a arder os olhos! Umas duas horas caminhando pela região do Sholla Market, sem pressa, é suficiente.

Découvert ce marché local avec «Go Addis» notre compagnie de tours à Addis-Abeba. Tous nos sens ont été mis à contribution ici, que ce soit les différentes odeurs, les sacs d'oignons, de café, les poulets en cage, le bruit des gens, une expérience sensorielle à vivre. Dépaysement garanti !

Good advise - Visit Sholla Market to experience a true Ethiopian Day to Day Market.
The Sholla Market is a maze of alleys filled with life and products; friendly traders selling vegetables, spices, frankincense, traditional dresses along Chinese T shirts and jeans, Ethiopian woven baskets and Chinese plastic, live chickens and false banana powder. Even though we were overwhelmed by the sights and smells, we shopped, made our contribution to the economy and left with a bag filled with precious experiences, our own truly authentic Ethiopian woven basket and coffee pot (Jebena).

Shola market is bustling! You can find everything from food and spices, to clothing and home goods. It’s worth a visit but I recommend traveling their with a guide. Wear covered shoes and beware of pickpockets.
