This is a truly impressive bridge over the Hrazdan River and Gorge. This is like the Royal Gorge Bridge of Armenia. I've never seen anything like it elsewhere in the country, certainly not in the greater Yerevan area. I first came across this bridge while biking through the gorge an from river-level looking up, it's a sight to see. But what really impressed me is when I rode my bike up to bridge level to see that this is a DOUBLE-DECKER bridge. On the top level there is road and on the bottom level there is an operational train track.
A little bit of internet research reveals the bridge was built by a company called Kamurjshin in 1981. The bridge is 640 meters (2099 ft) long and at a height of 121 meters (397 ft) above the Hrazdan River. Their website reads "For the realization of the construction of the 2-layer bridge through the canyon of Hrazdan river, most of the company workers were prized the laureate premium of the Soviet Committee of Ministers."
There are a few vantage points to view the bridge. On the west side of the gorge there is a paved road which descends steeply to river level. Along this road there are a few areas where you can get a good view. Follow that paved road to the bottom of the gorge and you'll find a small dirt road heading north just before you cross the river. Follow this dirt road north for no more than a quarter mile and you'll be standing directly under the bridge. (Note: this road is not on Google Maps, but is on Open Street Maps.) The dirt road enters a tunnel (see note in next paragraph) but shortly after the tunnel is gated, so you can't get a very good view of the bridge from the north looking south.
In addition to the impressive bridge itself, the entire area is heavily engineered. At the base of the bridge in the gorge there is an aqueduct which enters a tunnel just before the gorge narrows where the bridge is built. And additionally there are a series of tunnels that I think at one time must have been for a train line that ran along the river in the gorge (I doubt the Soviets would have built tunnels just for the small dirt road down there). And even moreover, there is a hydroelectric power plant just a few hundred feet up river. I encourage you to explore this area a bit since the entire area really is quite unique beyond just the very impressive bridge.
