abr. de 2019 • En solitario

Nice change of pace

The "city" itself felt abandoned. Half the shops were shuttered. All the locals seemed much more excited about the Marco Polo bridge just outside. Am not sure if they know that he didn't build it. It was just named that way because he allegedly walked on it before entering Beijing.

History comes alive. Visit the war museum and the Marco Polo bridge together. Hire a taxi.

WWII did not begin with the German invasion of Poland in 1939, but on July 7, 1937, when the Japanese attacked the Chinese over a pretense on the Marco Polo Bridge (named for the Italian explorer who wrote about it in "The Travels", it amazingly has many of the elements he would have seen, despite its multiple renovations). The Chinese won the skirmish, but the Japanese went on to seize Peking and begin a full scale invasion of China. Opposite the bridge, in the Wanping Fortress, is the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, which contains great exhibits with good English captioning, displayed chronologically. True, much is frank propaganda, giving the impression that the Communists under Mao won the war almost single-handedly (not true), but the exhibits of photos and artifacts is extensive and impressive. I hired a taxi round trip from downtown Beijing for 4000 yuan (about $65 US). In traffic it took about 30 minutes, and the driver waited patiently for me to finish my long visit. It was worth it for the convenience.

great fortress
jul. de 2015 • Familia
My son and I visited Wanping Fortress by taking the subway to Dawayao Station on Line 14, and then a 5 minute taxi ride. If entry is made via the South Gate, it will take 15 minutes to walk to the North Gate. There are many shops on either side of the main street that offer souvenirs.

On reaching the North gate, the Marco Polo bridge can be seen. A ticket for 20 yuan is required to walk on the bridge, which may be purchased from a separate ticket office outside the North gate. It should be noted that it is highly improbable that water will be seen under the bridge. There is no access to the main gate towers.

If you stroll along the west walls of the fort, you will see a sculpture park, beautifully maintained gardens and the evidence of where Japanese shells impacted the fort walls. If you keep the entrance ticket, then access to the south gate is possible after walking the length of the west wall.

There is a anti-Japanese war museum located in the fortress, which has good exhibits and offers a history of the aggression by the Japanese in different Chinese provinces from the Chinese point of view. Please note that passports are required .

Ghost town
feb. de 2015 • Parejas
The history of the bridge and the fortress is fascinating, however the Memorial Park, Anti-Japanese Museum and Fortress Wall are currently closed, and as a result all the shops and restaurants within the ancient town are shut.

The museum and park are shut for renovation, while I assume the wall is shut due to a lack of tourists - we were the only people around!!

It's a nice walk around for an hour but will be so much more interesting when the nearby attractions open up again. Currently they have no timeframe as to when these things will open back up.

may. de 2014 • Familia
